Introduction
“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
Prodigal Means - Spend Thrift
A wasteful person
self-indulgent
senselessly extravagant
Not in the story but if fit both sons well.
A Disrespectful Request
A Disrespectful Request
Then He said: “A certain man had two sons.
And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood.
But he shall acknowledge the son of the unloved wife as the firstborn by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.
People want their inheritance now!
People no longer honor their Fathers nor God the Father.
No longer wanted to be a part of the family!
Wanted nothing else to do with the beliefs of the family!
This culture honored parents and this was the ultimate rebellion!
When one dishonored a father in this manner they were dead to the family!
The Father was standing in the way the son wanted to live!
When the father divides his livelihood he divides his bios in the Greek. His life or livelihood.

And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living.
Not many days after - He couldn’t wait to take what his father gave him and now do with his life what he wanted!
The Younger Son Gatherer All Together - Gathered all together means he liquidated it into cash!
Land, animals, etc. had to be sold quick and the true value cannot be gotten.
People today sell their life so cheap
Journeyed to a far country
Far away from the father so no one knows you nor associates you with where you came from!
Runs away from accountability and responsibility
he wanted to destroy what he comes from in his life
no love from God
This is representative of the tax collectors and the sinners and representative of today
Gentile land
Wasted his possessions -
luke 11:30
Prodigal living -
But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want.
But When He Had Spent All
He did what he could control
There arose a severe famine in that land
He now becomes victim to what he could not control
and he began to be in want
He now finds himself in a position where he cannot provide for himself.
Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
Then
His pride will not yet let him return
he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country
He then attaches himself to the world
Worst thing that many people do, they attach themselves to the word
and he sent him into his fields
then they start being guided by the world into the worlds way of living and against how they should be living
to feed swine
he’s now working around the very thing that the his people did not eat at that time.
Don’t cast your pearls before swine and now he is with the swine!
“Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.
and the swine, though it divides the hoof, having cloven hooves, yet does not chew the cud, is unclean to you.
And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything.
And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate
Now he’s hitting rock bottom
and no one gave him anything.
And now the people who were with him when came to town are no where to be found!
The world will use you up and spit you out!
This is not about losing money but about losing one’s livelihood in heaven! You might still have money, you might be prospering in the world but bankrupt with God! If you are living your life for the world and not with God you away from God.
Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
“But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!
