1, 2 Timothy, Titus 1. Author (1:1–3)

1. Author (1:1–3)

1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God’s elect and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness—2 a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time, 3 and at his appointed season he brought his word to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior,

In his letters to churches or to individuals, Paul used the form of introductory greeting customary in first-century letter writing. In the Epistle to Titus, Paul identified himself as the source of the letter and Titus as the recipient, followed by his stated desire for God’s blessing upon Titus. With the exception of the Thessalonian correspondence, Paul typically added some words or phrases that described himself (e.g., “an apostle of Christ Jesus,” “a prisoner of Christ Jesus,” “a bond-servant of Christ Jesus”). These self-descriptions at the beginning of his letters served to establish his authority and right to speak. In Titus, Paul also used these self-descriptive phrases to introduce theological statements that indicate the scope and nature of God’s plan for redemption of persons. Romans and Galatians are the only other epistles in which Paul expanded his greeting.
