Our text begins by bringing Jonah back into the story after half a chapter away from him. This short departure in the text from following Jonah reminds us that much more is going on than what can be seen from his perspective.
The ESV says “it displeased Jonah.” A more literal translation would be, “it was evil in the eyes of Jonah.” Jonah’s blasphemous outlook is that God has done evil by sparing Nineveh.
