Introduction

Greetings…
We have been studying the theme, “Fundamentals,” with the express desire to have a longing for that pure spiritual milk that we may grow up into salvation.
1 Peter 2:2 ESV
2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—
We have specifically been looking at the “Biblical Family” and today we will conclude this by looking at “Biblical Grandparents.”
The bible has plenty to say on the matter and as such it is vital; we learn from God’s word on the subject.
With that in mind, let’s examine our lesson for today.
Grandparents must…

Set An Example

They Can Shape Lives.

Remember what Paul said about Timothy’s childhood examples.
2 Timothy 1:5 ESV
5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.
So…

How Can This Be Done?

After all they typically no longer live with you.
You might not see them all the time and be physically around them all the time?
Well, you can shape your grandchildren’s lives by…
Being faithful in your life and striving to make sure they are faithful in their life.
Whether they worship with you all the time or just when visiting you can have an impact on their lives for the spiritual better.
You can impact their lives when…
They see you worshiping with all the saints.
Psalm 9:1 ESV
1 I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
Can your grand-kids see your love of worshiping?
You pray constantly for them.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 ESV
17 pray without ceasing,
As I mentioned, most grandchildren don’t live close to their kids and grand-kids thus praying for them is a great way to impact their lives.

Summary

Some of the best ways you can impact your grandchildren is by “setting an example” for them to follow.
Let them see and speak often with them about worshiping with all your heart and the power of prayer.
Grandparents can also impact their grandchildren’s lives by...

Giving Counsel

Wisdom Based On The Physical.

Today’s kids are growing up faster and faster and yet with less and less knowledge and wisdom.
They are learning, by way of “hard knocks” rather than gentle teaching and training.
That isn’t to say there is no learning from “hard times” but that shouldn’t be the only way to gain wisdom.
Grandparents have spent a lifetime learning and applying that knowledge and they need to give that counsel to their grandchildren.
Job 12:12 ESV
12 Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding in length of days.
Financial wisdom.
Manly or womanly wisdom.
Wisdom on how to be better children for their parents whom you raised.
Grandparents should also give…

Wisdom Based On The Spiritual.

You and I know spiritual growth is a never ending process.
Hebrews 6:1 ESV
1 Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,
Because spiritual growth never stops grandparents must never stop, not only growing spiritually themselves, but helping their children and grandchildren to so the same.
2 Timothy 1:5 ESV
5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.

Summary

There is a caveat to giving counsel, and that is grandparents need to seek to have a relationship with their grandchildren so as to be able to give advice.
This means they need to have a good enough relationship with them for their grandchildren to want to listen.
Lastly, grandparents, to be biblical grandparents, need to have…

Dignity & Grace

Webster’s Definition.

Webster’s dictionary defines dignity as…

the quality or state of being worthy, honored, or esteemed

Webster’s dictionary defines grace as…

the quality or state of being considerate or thoughtful

In other words, grandparents are to be as Paul told Titus…
Titus 2:2–3 ESV
2 Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. 3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good,
Let’s examine the idea of grandparents have dignity.

Grandparents Should Have Dignity.

By this I mean they should be living in such a way that their grandchildren see them as worthy of honor and esteem.
Leviticus 19:32 ESV
32 “You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.
Also…

Grandparents Should Have Grace.

Again, grandparents should be living a life that is considerate and thoughtful.
Proverbs 20:29 ESV
29 The glory of young men is their strength, but the splendor of old men is their gray hair.

Summary

Grandparents, especially in today’s society, must show their grandchildren that this life doesn’t have to zap out and destroy one’s dignity and grace.
That a faithful child of God that lives a long life, if granted, can be all the more faithful now then they were all those years back.

Conclusion

The psalmist in Psalm 128 wrote…
Psalm 128:1–3 ESV
1 Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways! 2 You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you. 3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table.
Psalm 128:4–6 ESV
4 Behold, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord. 5 The Lord bless you from Zion! May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life! 6 May you see your children’s children! Peace be upon Israel!
May we each see our children’s children and love them in the Lord!
Invitation
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Romans 10:17 ESV
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Acts 17:30 ESV
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
Matthew 10:32 NKJV
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
2 Thessalonians 1:8 ESV
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 ESV
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Romans 6:3–5 ESV
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
1 John 1:7 ESV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
