Zephaniah: Zephaniah 1:13-The Lord Will Discipline His People Living in Jerusalem By Causing An Invading Army to Plunder Their Wealth
Lesson # 27
Zephaniah 1:13 “Moreover, their wealth will become plunder and their houses desolate; Yes, they will build houses but not inhabit them, and plant vineyards but not drink their wine.” (NASB95)
“Moreover, their wealth will become plunder” presents the result of the previous prophetic statement which appears in Zephaniah 1:12.
“And their houses desolate” presents the result of the previous prophetic statement that the wealth of the Lord’s people living in the kingdom of Judah will as a certainty be booty for an invading army.
“Yes, they will build houses but not inhabit them” advances upon and intensifies the previous prophetic statement that the homes of the Lord’s people in Judah will be booty for an invading army resulting in their homes being desolate.
Zephaniah 1:13 “Consequently, their wealth will as a certainty be the booty for an invading army resulting in their homes being desolate. Indeed, they will build homes but never live in them. Also, they will plant vineyards but never drink their wine.” (My translation)
The prophetic statement contained in Zephaniah 1:13 presents the result of the previous prophetic statement which appears in Zephaniah 1:12.
The latter predicts that during the period of the Lord’s sacrificial meal, He will cause Jerusalem to be searched with lamps.
The purpose of which is to inflict punishment against His people who are living unrepentant sinful lives who say in their hearts, “The Lord will never reward nor will He ever discipline.”
Now, here in verse 13, the Lord asserts through the prophet Zephaniah that He will cause the wealth of His people to become plundered so that their houses are desolate.
This indicates that the loss of their wealth is the direct result of the Lord inflicting punishment against them for living unrepentant sinful lives.
This is followed by another prophetic statement which advances upon and intensifies the previous prophetic statement that the homes of the Lord’s people in Judah will be booty for an invading army resulting in their homes being desolate.
The Lord asserts that His people will build homes but never inhabit them.
So the advancement and the intensification is that the homes the Lord’s people already live in will be destroyed but they will not live in the ones they are building.
This indicates that the Lord’s people are very wealthy in that they not only have homes they are living in but also building other homes for themselves as well.
Lastly, the Lord predicts that His people living in Judah will plant vineyards but never drink the wine produced from these vineyards.
This final prophetic statement echoes Deuteronomy 28:39.
In fact, the entire prophecy recorded in Zephaniah 1:13 is alluding to Deuteronomy 28:30-42 which is directed to the Jews who possessed a covenant relationship with God through faith in Him and were thus believers.
Therefore, this prophetic statement in Zephaniah 1:13 reveals to the Lord’s people living in Judah that they are about to face economic ruin as a result of an invading army from the north.
That this prophecy in verse 13 is directed at those who were believers and thus members of the covenant people of God is indicated by the content of verse 12.
“Lord” in verse 12 is the covenant-keeping personal name of God used in connection with God’s covenant relationship with the Jewish people.
This word emphasizes that God has a covenant relationship with these individuals living in the city of Jerusalem who saying in their hearts that God was indifferent to their unrepentant sinful lives.
This word thus indicates that the Lord through Zephaniah is speaking of those who have trusted in Him and are believers since in Old Testament Israel non-believers do not have a covenant relationship with Him but only believers.
“My people” in verse 12 is referring to the people described in Zephaniah 1:8-11 whom the Lord will punish during the period of time in which His sacrificial meal will take place.
It is referring to those in Jerusalem who had a covenant relationship with the God of Israel through faith Him.
This interpretation is indicated by the fact that the people who assert that the Lord will do neither good or evil are employing His covenant name, yhwh, “the Lord” indicating that these people have a covenant relationship with Him and are not unregenerate.
Unregenerate people in Old Testament Israel did not address God with this name but only those who had a covenant relationship with Him as a result of being declared justified by Him through faith in Him.
This prophecy contained in Zephaniah 1:13 was fulfilled in history through the three Babylonian invasions of Jerusalem and Judah.
The first invasion took place in 605 B.C., the second in 597 B.C. and the third in 587 B.C.
A comparison of Zephaniah 1:12 and 13 would appear to indicate that the majority of Jews in Zephaniah’s day during the reign of king Josiah of Judah who possessed a covenant relationship with God were in apostasy and their wealth appears to have stood in the way of their obedience to God.
They loved wealth, or in other words, they loved money and possessions.
Their love of wealth caused them to disobey God and neglect their covenant relationship with God.
This should be a warning for the church today in the twenty-first century in Western civilization.
Thus, wealth was an idol for these people as it is for many Christians in America in the twenty-first century.
The Ephesian Christians had the same problem with money in the first century A.D.
The problem of Christians in Ephesus loving money was addressed by Paul in First Timothy 6:3-10.
First Timothy 6:3 If and let us assume that it is true for the sake of argument that someone does teach false doctrine, in other words, they do not agree with sound words, namely that which originates from our Lord who is Jesus who is the Christ, specifically, that teaching which is for the purpose of godliness. And we agree that there are some who do teach false doctrine. 4 Then, they are arrogant. Consequently, they understand absolutely nothing. But rather he possesses a sick obsession with pointless debates, yes in fact pointless arguments about words from which he does cause envy, dissension, slanders, evil suspicions. 5 Men incessantly arguing, who are corrupt with regards to their mind as well as defrauded of the truth who are presuming a counterfeit form of godliness is a means of gaining wealth. 6 However, combined with contentment, godliness is, as an eternal spiritual truth a means of superior gain 7 because we brought absolutely nothing into this world so logically neither we, for our own benefit, are, as an eternal spiritual truth able to take anything out. 8 However, because we possess supplies of food as well as clothes, we must be content. 9 However, those who desire to be rich, as an eternal spiritual truth, fall into temptation which is a trap resulting in many foolish as well as harmful lusts, which indeed by virtue of their evil and sinful nature, as an eternal spiritual truth, plunge these men into experiencing destruction, yes and a sudden one at that! 10 For you see, the love of money is, as an eternal spiritual truth, the root cause, which produces all types of evil actions. Certain individuals, because they selfishly possess an insatiable desire for it, wandered away from the Christian faith. Consequently, they impaled themselves with many intense sufferings. (My translation)
These believers in Judah in Zephaniah’s day loved the cosmic system of Satan meaning that they took greater pleasure in the cosmic system of Satan because they held it in high regard.
It gave them greater satisfaction than their relationship with God.
They loved the cosmic system of Satan in the sense that they took pleasure in it because they held it in high esteem so that it became more important to them than their relationship with God.
Today during the church age, they would be disobeying the command of First John 2:15.
1 John 2:15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever. (NASB95)
