High Priestly Prayer
High Priestly Prayer
in previous sermons we have discussed most of the subject matter in this chapter
we this morning are going to look at the person praying this prayer
Here we have the privileged of listening to God talking to God
read John 17, V 1-5 Jesus prays for Himself
V 6-19 Jesus prays for His disciples
V 20-26 Jesus prays for the Church
Pray
High priest
High priest
the first high priest was Aaron
“And bring near to you Aaron, your brother, and his sons with him from the midst of the Israelites to serve as priests for me—Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron.
they would be in a leadership position
he would be over the regular priests
And behold, Amariah the chief priest is over you in all matters of Yahweh, and Zebadiah the son of Ishmael, the governor of the house of Judah, in all matters of the king, and the Levites shall be before you as officials. Be strong and do well! May Yahweh be with the upright.”
they would seek Gods guidance
also the High Priest would make intersession for the people
praying on behalf of the people
praying to the Father
He will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will ask for him by the decision of the Urim before Yahweh. On his command they will go out, and at his command they will come in, both he and all of the Israelites with him, the entire community.”
most important he would make an atonement for himself and the people for their sins
And Aaron will make atonement on its horns one time in the year from the blood of the sin offering of the atonement; one time in the year he will make atonement on it throughout your generations; it is a most holy thing for Yahweh.”
Once a year he would go into the Holy of Holies to make an atonement
The Prayer/ Intercession
The Prayer/ Intercession
the Glory Jesus set aside when coming to earth
the Shekinah Glory
the glory the children of Israel saw in the wilderness
Revelation 1:12–16 (LEB)
And I turned to see the voice which was speaking with me, and when I turned, I saw seven gold lampstands,
and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching to the feet and girded around his chest with a golden belt,
and his head and hair were white like wool, white as snow, and his eyes were like a fiery flame,
and his feet were like fine bronze when it has been fired in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of many waters,
and he had in his right hand seven stars, and a sharp double-edged sword coming out of his mouth, and his face was like the sun shining in its strength.
the same as Saul saw on the road to Damascus
just as you have given him authority over all flesh, in order that he would give eternal life to them—everyone whom you have given him.
Jesus has been given authority over everyone
to either save all the the Father has given as a gift to the son
Judge/ opening of the seals
“I have revealed your name to the men whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours, and you have given them to me, and they have kept your word.
praying for the Apostles
V 7 that they understand who Jesus is
that He comes from the Father
V 9 making sure the Father and the apostles know that they are the ones being prayed for because they belong to the Father
V 11 Jesus will be leaving soon and His protective presence will be missed
V 14 the world will hate them
V 15 Satan will attack them
Be sober; be on the alert. Your adversary the devil walks around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.
Resist him, steadfast in your faith, because you know the same kinds of sufferings are being accomplished by your community of believers in the world.
And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered for a short time, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
To him be the power forever and ever. Amen.
V 16 sanctify them through your word/ continue to make them into the image of Jesus
Praying for the Universal Church
V 20 those who will believe
V 21 that we will be united together just as the Father and Son are united to be a witness to the world
V 26 God’s love be in us
Jesus intersession for His own while He is on this earth
Jesus as our High Priest gave an example to us His priests
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s possession, so that you may proclaim the virtues of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light,
Jesus Our High priest
Jesus Our High priest
not an ordinary high priest
turn to Hebrews 7
Thus if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood, for on the basis of it the people received the law, what further need is there for another priest to arise according to the order of Melchizedek and not said to be according to the order of Aaron?
if the descendents of Aaron is good enough...
Aaron made a golden calf
The high priest of Jesus time murdered Jesus
Jesus did not come from the tribe of Levi, but Judah
but the Father made Him in the order of Melchizedek
For it is testified, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”
We meet him in genesis
Genesis 14:17–18 (LEB)
After his return from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the Valley of the King).
And Melchizedek, the king of Salem, brought out bread and wine. (He was the priest of God Most High).
turn to Psalm 110,
turn back to Hebrews 7 1-9
Jesus is superior to Levitical priests
by so much more Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.
And indeed many have become priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office,
but he, because he continues forever, holds the priesthood permanently.
The Father has sworn that Jesus will be a priest forever
SOO
Jesus is a high priest according to Melchizedek
King of peace
Priest of the most High God
superior to the Levites
is a priest forever
our High Priest of the Church
able to intercede for us
Therefore
Hebrews 7:25 (LEB)
Therefore also he is able to save completely those who draw near to God through him, because he always lives in order to intercede on their behalf.
completely save -Jesus does the saving, it does not depend on any of our works
Those who believe, those He prayed for in the Garden
those who the Father gave to Him as a gift
because
He lives -In order to intercede for us
Jesus interceded then and is now is
PICTURE
Jesus is at the right hand of the Father
Who is the one who condemns? Christ is the one who died, and more than that, who was raised, who is also at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.
but what does this interceding look like
1 John 2:1 (LEB)
My little children, I am writing these things to you in order that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one,
the interceding is the Body of Jesus
the nail pierced Hands, the evidence of the spear in His side
These are my people , My Bride
Thes are the ones that you gave me as a gift
These are the ones who I bought from slavery to sin
with my blood I redeemed them
I Am the propitiation for their sins
I took your wrath against their sin, Father
I took it upon my body and here are the scars
SONG -Nothing but the blood
Logos Digital Hymnal Nothing But the Blood
1 What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
2 For my pardon, this I see,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
For my cleansing this my plea,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
3 Nothing can for sin atone,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
Naught of good that I have done,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
4 This is all my hope and peace,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
This is all my righteousness,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Chorus Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
