Theme: Jesus is the Light
(repeated 4X in 7 verses).
OBSERVATION:
OBSERVATION:
How many times the word “light” is repeated from vv.6-13?
4 times (vv.7, 8 twice, 9)
What is the purpose of John the Baptist?
to witness or testify, to tell the facts about Jesus. (v.7)
Why did John the Baptist came to witness?
so that all might believe in Jesus Christ as the LIGHT (v.7)
What does the LIGHT (Jesus) do?
Enlightens man (convicts man of his sin so man can go to the light) (v.9)
What did the world do in response to Jesus?
The world did not know/acknowledge him (v.10)
What did the Jews do in response to Jesus?
they did not receive Him (the Jews rejected him and hanged him on the cross) (v.11)
Some received Jesus and believed, what happens to those who believe in Jesus?
They become children of God (v.12)
How did the people become children of God?
Jesus gave them the right, when they believed in Him.
This implies that only those who “believe” has given the right, not all humans have the right to be called “children of God” in a strict sense.
The right is reserved only to those who believe - they are now adopted to the family of God. (cf. Gal. 3:26, exclusive to believers only)
Those who believed are born of God - spiritual rebirth (cf. John 3:3-6)
INTERPRETATION:
INTERPRETATION:
Jesus came into the world as Light, so that those in darkness (sin) will come to the light and receive spiritual life, but man choose to reject Jesus and stay in darkness (sin).
But those who received him and believed in Him to be saved, Jesus gave them the right to become children of God.
Spiritual rebirth is not by human ancestry, nor of human decision, but of God who gave the right. It is only God who can give Spiritual rebirth.
Application/ Reflection:
Application/ Reflection:
1. Why is it important to receive Jesus in your life and believe in Him as your Lord and Savior?
2. What would stop you from totally surrendering your life to Jesus today?
You have a decision to make today, will you receive Jesus in your life and believe in Him as your Lord and Savior? If yes, there is something that you need to do:
“A”- ADMIT I have done wrong, and my sin separates me from a holy God. (Romans 3:23)
“B” - BELIEVE that Jesus Christ died to forgive me, and then rose again, proving He is the one true God. (Romans 10:9-10)
“C” - CONFESS my sins to Jesus, and ask Him to be the king of my heart. (1 John 1:9)
