I. Legalism is Bondage: 6:53-7:5
A. Jesus healed people because He is compassion ate. Yet many only wanted to be healed, and were superstitious about it. The popular opinon was that if a Holy man passed by, you could be healed if you touched the him, or fringe of their cloak.
B. Many will argue that Jesus healed a lady that way, but He debunked that theory, because of what He said. (Benny Hinn ex)
And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed of your affliction.”
C. After all of that the Pharisees tried to trap Jesus with a foolish question about washing. Their tradition was that you had to wash your hands twice before eating and take a bath when you went to the market, just in case you might have touched something or someone that made you unclean!
D. These Pharisees were obnoxious and loved to keep people in bondage and fear of ever violating the law…EVER!!! There was absolutely no grace!
E. The Pharisees ask why the disciples (and Jesus by implication) doesn’t walk according to their traditions, not the word of God.
II. Legalism is Hypocrisy vs. 6-13
II. Legalism is Hypocrisy vs. 6-13
A. Jesus throws down. He starts off by calling them actors.
B. Then He cuts to the heart of the matter and tells them that the Pharisees would rather hold to their traditions, than to follow/obey God’s Word.
C. Instead of tending to their family like they should, they claimed to be serving God instead.
But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
III. Legalism is Blinding vs. 14-23
III. Legalism is Blinding vs. 14-23
A. Jesus says that your heart is the important thing not the outward appearance. (Tattoos ex) .
B. Jesus had already declared that all foods were clean. The disciples (including Peter who helped write this gospel and got the vision in Acts 10) would understand later.
C. Jesus tells us that legalism is the blind leading the blind. Because legalism puts on a good show, but can not save. (Legalism ex)
Jesus replied, “Every plant not planted by my heavenly Father will be uprooted, so ignore them. They are blind guides leading the blind, and if one blind person guides another, they will both fall into a ditch.”
D. It’s the heart that is wicked. Our outward appearance that blinds others, but not God.
“The heart is more deceitful than all else
And is desperately sick;
Who can understand it?
E. Jesus lists what’s in our hearts and we can see what and how this plays out in religious (“church”) life and secular. “Evil thoughts” (dialogismoi hoi kakoi) are evil reasonings within oneself. “Sexual immorality” (porneiai), “theft” (klepai—kleptomania), and “murder” (moikeiai) are also condemned. “Greed” (pleonexai) is an appetite for what belongs to others. “Malice” (poneriai) is a heart which is “completely equipped to inflict evil on any man” (Bengel). “Deceit” (dolos) means to bait, to deceive people. “Lewdness” (aselgeia) involves plunging into moral debauchery in open defiance of public opinion. “Envy” (opthalmos poneiros) refers to an evil eye which watches another’s possessions. “Slander” (blasphemia) can take the form of blasphemy against God or slander against men. “Arrogance” (hupereiphania) is the sin of a self-praising person who has contempt for everyone but himself. “Folly” (aphrosune) describes a person who is desensitized morally and spiritually.”- R. Kent Hughes. (Murder in Coweta County, John Wallace in April, 1948 of Meriwether county, GA.
