Israel’s Giant

The Philistines were and old enemy of the Israelites from the time of the Judges. Samson fought against them. The Prophet/Judge Samuel fought against them and now King Saul is facing them.
Most of our Giants are Old Enemies… The ones who have tormented us for a long time.
The Philistine “giant” was defeated eventually by King David.
The importance of the killing the “Giant” wasn’t just get rid of him but to build the kingdom of God. David’s and Israel’s leading power in the region came from the battles and victories fought against the Philistines.
Giants don’t die easy. Many battles… many wars..later they were defeated.
The word That I have for you today is this!
Giants Will Fall!
Let’s examine the word in the book of 1 Samuel 17
Verses 1
1 Samuel 17:1 (NKJV)
Now the Philistines gathered their armies together to battle, and were gathered at Sochoh, which belongs to Judah; they encamped between Sochoh and Azekah, in Ephes Dammim.
The Giants Occupy territory that doesn’t belong to them.
Giants take up space, they take over your territory and they eat your peace, and drink your joy. They plunder you harvest and keep you from enjoying the blessings of God!
God wants to return to you what belongs to you!
1 Samuel 17:2 (NKJV)
And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and they encamped in the Valley of Elah, and drew up in battle array against the Philistines.
King Saul and his army came together against the Giant ready for battle… but did not fight!
They did all the right things to stop the enemy but fight!
1 Samuel 17:3 (NKJV)
The Philistines stood on a mountain on one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side, with a valley between them.
The Battle was to happen in the valley not on the mountain top.
Giants Fall in the Valley not on the mountain top!
The mountain top is for Giant Slayers! Those who aren’t intimidated by the valleys.
We should be ready to engage in battle in the valley because that is where the Giants fall!
1 Samuel 17:4–7 (NKJV)
And a champion went out from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, from Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. He had a bronze helmet on his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze. And he had bronze armor on his legs and a bronze javelin between his shoulders. Now the staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and his iron spearhead weighed six hundred shekels; and a shield-bearer went before him.
The Enemy boast’s many victories and calls himself a champion… someone hard to beat The enemy isn’t afraid of the valleys… Its in the valleys that He boasts and brags and intimidates us.
Giant’s are big to the eye!
Goliath was around 9ft tall
Bronze helmet, bronze armour and bronze javelin
A coat of scales that weighed 125 lbs
His spear was like a weaver’s beam. That is a pretty thick piece of wood that is also heavy.
The tip of his spear weighed 15 lbs
Visually intimidating
The thought of going to battle against him sounded very foolish.
1 Samuel 17:8–11 (NKJV)
Then he stood and cried out to the armies of Israel, and said to them, “Why have you come out to line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and you the servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.” And the Philistine said, “I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.” When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
Giants talk!
They intimidate and threaten, they tease you!
To kill a Giant you must be willing to fight one on one…
Your Giant though you are surrounded by friends and families, and have the support of your brothers and sisters, You still will have to face Him alone
The Good news is that when the Giant falls he and his army will serve you!
These words can be dismaying and discouraging , but be of good courage!
Part 2
For forty days the Giant would come out morning and evening… How long will the giant prevail?
1 Samuel 17:24–25 (NKJV)
And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were dreadfully afraid. So the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel; and it shall be that the man who kills him the king will enrich with great riches, will give him his daughter, and give his father’s house exemption from taxes in Israel.”
Giants cause fear. They cause feelings in us that overwhelm us and cause us to run...
Don’t run, fight! There is a reward when we conquer our fears and defeat the giant.
Fear is a liar and is taking away your territory!
There is a reward for defeating the Giant
David understood this..
1 Samuel 17:26 (NKJV)
Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
Not everyone will understand you. Giant Killers don’t behave like everyone else.
God didn’t create you to conform to the world but to be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
1 Samuel 17:28 NKJV
Now Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger was aroused against David, and he said, “Why did you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the insolence of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.”
According to everyone:
David did’t belong there.
He wasn’t the right person for the job
He was small and not well trained
He would definitely lose a fight with a giant.
He had character flaws… He was avoiding his job!
1 Samuel 17:31–37 NKJV
Now when the words which David spoke were heard, they reported them to Saul; and he sent for him. Then David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.” But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.” Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”
You have already won many battles… we forget so quickly
David didn’t and He credited His victory to the Lord!
The Lord is the only one who can give us victory!
Don’t try and fit in or use another mans armour. What gives another person victory won’t give you victory! Stop trying to wear another persons battle gear. Get your own!
Part 3

Battle Weapons

You have what it takes to bring down your giant!
1 Samuel 17:38–39 NKJV
So Saul clothed David with his armor, and he put a bronze helmet on his head; he also clothed him with a coat of mail. David fastened his sword to his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. And David said to Saul, “I cannot walk with these, for I have not tested them.” So David took them off.
Your own Armor. Simple is best. You have been clothed with God’s righteousness!
Walk in your own experience!
no one has had your experience. David hadn't tested another mans armour. He had tested his own.
His Staff! The thing he used to care for the sheep… The staff that God has given you to care for will be the weapon used to bring down the giant!
What do you have in your hand? What can you do?
David chose for himself the stones…
Part 4

Facing the Giant

David now faces the Giant.
How?
1 Samuel 17:40–44 NKJV
Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine. So the Philistine came, and began drawing near to David, and the man who bore the shield went before him. And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him; for he was only a youth, ruddy and good-looking. So the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. And the Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!”
The Giant laughed at Davids attempt
But David had a conviction! a certainty in his heart and mind that is so important for us today
1 Samuel 17:45–47 NKJV
Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.”
David came in the name of Jesus - There was a confidence in David.
“The Lord will deliver you into my hand”
The Lord will - Shut/close, deliver, surrender
David was confident. He trusted God to defeat the enemy!
He didn’t trust his own abilities or strength but there was a quiet confidence that brought that giant down.
God will fight for you through you!
How is your trust in God?
What is your faith Level?
Do you have confidence that God will bring down your giant?
Here is how to build your trust and confidence in God!
Begin by trusting… Believing without seeing, having faith.
Hebrews 11:1 NKJV
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Hear the word of God today and believe it with all your heart!
Proverbs 3:5–6 NKJV
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
Don’t lean on your own understanding. Lean on His word
Psalm 9:10 NKJV
And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.
Jeremiah 17:7–8 NKJV
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit.
Stay strong and steady through the difficult times.
1 Samuel 17:48–51 NKJV
So it was, when the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, that David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David. Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.
God is for you!
God has defeated the Giants
God will/has fight/fought for you!
Have peace and build your trust and confidence in Him!
The Giant will fall!
