John 1:35-51
Introduction
- In 1968, Harry Nilsson penned the lyrics that would be made more famous by Three Dog Night…
“One is the loneliest number…”
- “One” often times seems to be an insignificant number…it’s lonely, it small, it’s not a lot.
- Who wants…one cookie…one shoe…one penny…one dollar…
- In the early 1980’s Lay’s Potato Chips had penned the slogan…No One Can Eat Just One
- In our text this morning I want us to notice that “one” can have an impact.
A Personal Invitation
- The men had first heard about Jesus from John the Baptist. (v35)
- They begin to follow Jesus…Jesus first ask them a question…
What are you seeking?
(What are you looking for?)
- Everyone is looking for something…(assurance, position, excitement, escape, affirmation, experience, etc.)
- These disciples, however, want to know where he is staying? (who are you affiliated with?.. Who are you people?.. What group do you belong to?..)
- Jesus doesn’t answer their questions, but responds with an invitation…
Come and you will see.
- The two disciples do just that, they go and check it out…The Apostle John notes they spend the day with Him.
- After this, “one” of them (Andrew) goes and tells his brother (40-41).
We have found the Messiah.
- Andrew, brings him back to Jesus (42)…
- The next day, Jesus moves to a new location and extends another invitation to Philip (45).
Follow Me.
An Intentional Witness
- Philip becomes an intentional witness to Nathanael.
- Philip tells Nathanael that they have found him…
…whom Moses and the prophets wrote…
- Nathanael doesn’t immediately respond…like last week there is an obstacle.
Can anything good come out of Nazareth?
- Philip doesn’t give up, but invites him to come and see
- Jesus already knows Nathanael…even though your “one” may not know God…God already knows them…and has always known them.
- (47) Jesus speaks to Nathanael about himself….Nathanael is perplexed and asked how?
- We are all images bearers of God…He knows us, and always has…
- (49) Nathanael declares that Jesus is the Son of God…not the Son of Joseph (see v45)
Conclusion
Andrew was “a one”…who heard John the Baptist “a one”…and went and found Jesus “the one”…then told his brother Peter “a one”…and brought him to see Jesus “the one”
Philip “a one” is asked by Jesus “the one” to follow him…Philip tells Nathanael “another one” and invites him to come and see Jesus “the one”...Nathanael “a one” hears and believes Jesus “the one” and is promised he will see great things.
What if for the rest of the year…
1 tells 1 = 2
2 tells 1 each = 4
4 tells 1 each = 8
8 tells 1 each = 16
16 tells 1 each = 32
32 tells 1 each = 64
All because of one.
You never know when those seeds from faithfully having a one will sprout.
This week while have a conversation…(Barbershop)
