VBS Sunday
07-25-2021
Welcome
we have completed another Vacation Bible School
What a week
The Theme for VBS 2021 was Destination Dig
unearthing the truth about Jesus
Over the last week the kids learned about historical documents that prove the life of Jesus
They learned that Jeremiah 29:13 is true
Jeremiah 29:13 NASB95
13 ‘You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.
That if you and I will seek the Lord with our whole heart we will find him
Jesus is not a god who plays hide and seek with you and I
Jesus is the constant in the ever changing world
This week they say how if they seek the Lord with their whole heart that Jesus will be found
It would be easy and may even make sense if we put together a list of how to seek the Lord
But that is not what the verse says that if you check the boxes
You already know where Jesus is
The Word of God and Prayer
But lets be honest if your heart isn't in it then as the verse says you won’t find Jesus
On day 1
the kids learned about the dead sea scrolls
How in 1946 a shepherd made a discover of clay jars in a cave near Qumran
These scrolls include fragments of scripture from every book of the old testament except the book fo Esther
how amazing is that to see what we read in the Old Testament is true because the Old Testament we read in our Bibles is the same that was written on the Dead Sea Scrolls
Church the Old Testament can and should be trusted and part of our walk with Christ
So much so that about 700 years before the Birth of Christ Isaiah talked about is
Isaiah 7:14 NASB95
14 “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.
some 700 years before Christ
Isaiah writes this
This is the story of Jesus’s birth
The coming Christ, the savior
This changed everything
Up until this point they followed the law and as we have learned the law does not lead to righteousness
But the law does point to Jesus
Jesus is born and lived and was crucified and buried and then arose 3 days later
Church it is so important to see that Isaiah was writing about Jesus’s birth some 700 years before it would happen
It shows us that God had a plan and was moving his plan forward
We also see that the Old Testament can and should be trusted
on Day 2
the kids learned about the steps of Siloam
This was a pool that would have been near the temple
It would have been a pool that was there for cleansing
the steps were found in 2004 when workers were repairing a water line near Jerusalem’s temple mount
So that is really cool because they have found it and we know what is was
They are steps to a pool
Except when you read scripture
John 9:1–7 NASB95
1 As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 “We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work. 5 “While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.” 6 When He had said this, He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and applied the clay to his eyes, 7 and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and washed, and came back seeing.
Jesus is walking along and they come across a blind man
Jesus could have very well kept walking by but he doesn’t
We see in this account of Jesus the amazing healing power of God
That Jesus has that healing power
Praise the Lord Jesus was not just a man, was not just a good man, was not just a really really good teacher
Rather Jesus was fully God in human form, and as you remember was all part of Gods plan to give salvation to the Jew first and then the greek
But in this account is gives us where is happened
At least near the steps of the pool of siloam
Wow so what those workers found in 2004 was somewhere near the actual place where Jesus spat on the ground to heal a man of blindness
just wow
Then on day 3
they learned about a path that originally when from Mount Zion to the Kidron Valley and then later to Caiahphas house
The later part of the path is very interesting because it would have been a path Jesus probably walked the night he was betrayed and arrested
On that night
Jesus had just finished supper
He takes the disciples to the garden to Gethsemane which is at the base of the mount of olives
So lets just say Jesus went to the Olive Garden
While he is there praying
Judas comes to betray him with a kiss and that starts everything in such a quick night
John 18:12–15 NASB95
12 So the Roman cohort and the commander and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him, 13 and led Him to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was expedient for one man to die on behalf of the people. 15 Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so was another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest,
Jesus is first taken to Annas’s house but notice where they end up in the court of the high priest
And the high priest that year was Caiaphas
So it would seem that maybe Jesus walked along that path at some point
This was again all part of Gods plan to bring about salvation to a sinful world
Then on Day 4
That was the day I got to speak to them
I am so blessed that we take one day our of VBS to share the Gospel
Its more than just sharing the Gospel it is asking them to respond
We give an invitation to the kids and would you know it church they respond
that Thursday night 3 students rededicated their lives to Christ
and 3 students walked out of darkness and into light
they began a brand new personal relationship with Jesus
They learned about the empty tomb
Luke 24:1–7 NASB95
1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling clothing; 5 and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead? 6 “He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, 7 saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.”
That we shouldn’t be looking in tombs for our Jesus
That Jesus is alive just as he said he would be
That Jesus also had to be arrested and had to be crucified to save you and I
See there is a sin problem in the world
God had a plan and that plan was sending His only son Jesus to die on a cross to save you and I
That death on the cross and the empty tomb today gives us the opportunity to have a personal relationship with God through Jesus
Jesus was and is the answer to our to your and to my sin problem
Day 5
they learned the about a particular dead sea scroll
The great scroll of Isaiah
Remember on day 1 in 1946 a shepherd found the jars full of scrolls
in particular they found the scroll of Isaiah, and I believe is the most complete scroll they have found
It is 24 feet long!
It is still on display in Jerusalem
This particular scroll they have dated to about 125BC
The originally was written about 700 BC, then the Dead Sea scroll was about 125BC, then the Latin Vulgate was about 1000AD, and your Bible today
that is actually less time and less copies then some of the worlds most famous books
The amazing thing is they all say the same thing
It didn’t change over time
Isaiah 53:6–11 NASB95
6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him. 7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth. 8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as for His generation, who considered That He was cut off out of the land of the living For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due? 9 His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth. 10 But the Lord was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand. 11 As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities.
This is the Gospel message some 700 years before the Birth of Christ
That Jesus would be lead to die to pay for your sin and my sin
Jesus was and church still is the answer to the sin problem in the world
We don’t have a race problem, we don’t have a economic problem, we don’t have a health problem, we don’t have a political problem
Church what we have is a sin problem
The only answer to the sin problem is Jesus
it is a through a personal relationship with Jesus that you find freedom from sin in your life
CLOSING
As the band comes up
If you are here and do not have a personal relationship wth Jesus
We would invite you to the front
To speak with someone
They will open up the Word of God and show you through scripture that the way to accep that free gift of salvation through Jesus’s deaht on the cross is to repent from your sin
to turn from your sin and to trust in Jesus
or maybe you already have a personal relationship with Jesus and maybe you simply need to spend sometime at the altar is prayer
the altar is open
