I would say the root and the heart of the “flesh” is our distrust of God.
Why do I lust? Why do I hate? Why do I have pride? Why do I oppress?
Because I have needs that I’m convinced God is not able to meet and the way He would provide for these needs I don’t trust either.

Distrust leads me to think that I’m on my own and it’s up to me to take care of me.
If this means degrading women, men choose it. If it means oppressing fellow human beings, Europeans choose it. If it means marrying for wealth, women choose it. If it means drowning our depression, we choose the drug of choice.
Why? Because at the heart I don’t believe He is watching over me; so I do me and you do you.
Sins are symptoms of distrust and cynicism of God’s character and heart towards us.
This is why the measure God took to send Jesus as a sacrifice is so crucial. A dramatic measure to express that there is no extent He won’t go to show us He loves us and that He can be trusted.
Sins can fall away when we are convinced that someone greater than us loves enough to go to hell on our behalf.
