The 318 Introduction

Welcome to the first ever “The 318”. “The 318” is named after 2 Corinthians 3:18 which says, “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”
The goal of “The 318” is to see our Dalraida Students gradually transform into the image of Christ each year.
Also, this retreat is the transition trip for our rising 7th graders into the youth group.
Our theme this year is SHINE! Why?

Introduction

Summer Review

Light of the World series
Tonight, we will focus on the meaning of the opposite of light. Darkness.
By learning about darkness in the Bible, the meaning of light will become that much brighter.

Pray (Myles)

Main Idea

Biblical darkness represents Satan, Death, and Sin.

#1: Darkness as Satan

Point #1

Darkness represents the power of Satan.

Power of Satan

Acts 26:18 ESV
to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’
What power does Satan possess? What does he do? Steal. Kill. Destroy.
John 10:10 ESV
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
1. Blind and Deceive Unbelievers
2 Corinthians 4:4 ESV
In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
Ephesians 2:1–2 ESV
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—
1 John 5:19 ESV
We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
Ephesians 6:12 ESV
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
2. Tempt and Deceive Believers
1 Thessalonians 3:5 ESV
For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent to learn about your faith, for fear that somehow the tempter had tempted you and our labor would be in vain.
1 Corinthians 7:5 ESV
Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
Colossians 1:13 ESV
He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,

#2: Darkness as Death

Point #2

Darkness represents spiritual and physical death.
Luke 1:79 ESV
to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
Matthew 4:16 ESV
the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.”

#3: Darkness as Sin

Point #3

Darkness represents the sin of mankind.
John 3:19–20 ESV
And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.
Ephesians 5:11 ESV
Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.
1 John 1:5–7 ESV
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
Proverbs 4:19 ESV
The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble.

Conclusion

Darkness Did Not Win

John 1:4–5 ESV
In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Satan Lost

Colossians 1:13 ESV
He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,

Death Lost

2 Timothy 1:10 ESV
and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,

Sin Lost
