Love-hate

Have you ever heard of a love-hate relationship? Did you know there is a kind of love that God hates? That is what we are looking at today.
Illustration- School kids tour hospital and at the end of the tour a child asks “why do people here wash their hands so much?” The nurse who gave the tour answered simply, “For two reasons they love health, and second they hate germs.”
In our passage today, my original intention was to go through (v.29), but that is too big for us as we study God’s Word together. In our passage you will see
John gives a stern warning
John gives the reason for the warning
So here is how I would like to approach the section today.
What the world is (1Jn2:12-17)
What the world does (1Jn2:15-16)
What the Christian is ( 1Jn2:12-14)
Where the world is going (1Jn2:17)

Because what the world is

Love-hate, they do go together and we will see that in our passage, a primer for us is (Ps97:10; Rom12:9).
Psalm 97:10 NASB95
10 Hate evil, you who love the Lord, Who preserves the souls of His godly ones; He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
add to that one
Romans 12:9 NASB95
9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good.
OK, now may we bring in our passage today then I will go and talk about “Because what the world is.”
1 John 2:12–13 NASB95
12 I am writing to you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven you for His name’s sake. 13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, children, because you know the Father.
1 John 2:14–15 NASB95
14 I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one. 15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
1 John 2:16–17 NASB95
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
We know that John’s epistle so far has reminded us to exercise love, the right kind of love (1Jn2:7-11) and in our passage today we are looking at the wrong kind of love, the love God hates.
Last week we went over (vv.12-14) but we just brought them in today to keep things in context.
So, now pressing onto (vv.15-17) let’s glean a little then I want to go into “because what the world is?
What is the instruction given (v.15)?
What is the purpose of the instruction (v.16)?
What is the promise (negative, positive) found in (v.17)?
If you were a part of the John directed small group study “world” was one of the words we studied as we read through John. It can have several meanings
World meanings:
World- the cosmos; the physical world and creation (Act17:24)
Acts 17:24 NASB95
24 “The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands;
World - as in mankind, the human world (Jn3:16)
John 3:16 NASB95
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
World - a spiritual system that is opposed to God and Christ (1Jn2:15-17)
We are already looking at these verses so no need to put them up, we will be talking about them enough
The love not the world is not talking about creation, is not talking about the world of men, but the spiritual system opposed to God and Jesus.
We use this world daily, it is a system of beliefs like “world of finance” “world of politics.” but the world here used in the bible is Satan’s system of opposing God and Jesus Christ and is opposite to that which is godly.
Jesus called Satan prince of this world (Jn12:31)
John 12:31 NASB95
31 “Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.
Satan has an organization of evil spirits trying to influence the world (Eph6:11-12)
Ephesians 6:11–12 NASB95
11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
As the Holy Spirit uses the Christian as an instrument of peace, a tool for God to use to accomplish His will; Satan uses the world to fulfill his evil purposes
He is the prince of power of this world (Eph2:1-2)
Ephesians 2:1–2 NASB95
1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.
(stop; pause, focus on the Christian “were”)
A Christian is a member of the human world, live in the physical world, but does not belong to the spiritual world that is Satan’s system of opposing God.
Consider this as a Christian (Jn15:18-19)
As Jesus spoke to His disciples as a disciple today this fits for us.
John 15:18–19 NASB95
18 “If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. 19 “If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.
(transition) We have defined the world and the several meanings now may we move to the what the world does

What the world does

Worldliness is not so much as a matter of activity as it is a matter of attitude. Let’s let the passage and other scripture show us.
1 John 2:15–16 NKJV
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
What is the command (imperative) given in (v.15)?
Do not love the world nor the things of this world (world system).
What is reason for the command (v.15)?
If you do, then the love of the Father is not in you.
How is the world described (v.16)?
Lust of flesh, eyes, boastful pride of life
I mentioned it is about attitude more than activity, we can refrain from places and activities and still love the world, for worldliness is a matter of the heart. Loving things more than you love God (matter of priority)
Warren Wiersbe says this.
“Worldliness not only affects your response to the love of God; it als affects your response to the will of God.”
Love of God and love for God proven by doing the will of God (Jn14:15); worldliness hinders that.
John 14:15 NASB95
15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
So a good practical definition of worldliness would be
Anything in the Christians life that causes him to lose enjoyment and obedience to the Fathers love and the Fathers will.
Responding to the Fathers love (how, where, why you walk as you do) will display your godliness or your worldliness.
These tools of the World and Satan the prince of this world are the tools introduced back in the garden (Gen3:5) look and lets see together
Worldly system introduced into the world (Gen3:3-6)
Genesis 3:3–5 NASB95
3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’ ” 4 The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! 5 “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
and here is what I want to show you
Genesis 3:6 NASB95
6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.
The woman saw good for food (lust of the flesh)
It was a delight to the eyes(lust of the eyes)
Make one wise (lustful pride of life)
The results where she took, ate and gave to her husband who was with her.
Lust of the flesh is the things that appeal to man’s fallen nature.
As a Christian we are born in the flesh, but we are reborn of the spirit (Jn3:5-6)
John 3:5–6 NASB95
5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
We then are partakes of God’s divine nature (ref: 2Pt1:4)
So while we live in the flesh and live in the Spirit the two can and do battle and are contrary to one another (think of Gal5:17-23)
Galatians 5:17–19 NASB95
17 For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. 19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality,
Galatians 5:20–21 NASB95
20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:22–23 NASB95
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Think about this, the fruit on the tree was good, except God said not to touch it. God said all things were good, He did not create bad.
God gives us the desire to eat, but gluttony is a sin. God gives desire for sexual intimacy, any outside of marriage is sin. God gives desire for thirst, but being drunk on wine is a sin. How about sleep, rest? God gave us those things, but laziness is a sin. Do you get the idea? God’s gifts when used properly are a blessing, when used wrongly it is sin, it is immorality.
Give you some scriptures to look up and consider on your own regarding what God says about the flesh:
(Below scriptures are not on screen, just quote them)
There is nothing good (Rom7:18)
Romans 7:18 NASB95
18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not.
It profits nothing (Jn6:63)
John 6:63 NASB95
63 “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.
So, put no confidence in it (Php3:3)
Philippians 3:3 NASB95
3 for we are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh,
Make no provision for it (Rom13:14)
Romans 13:14 NASB95
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.
(transition): So, we have the lust of the flesh, now we go to the next tool Satan uses
Lust of the eyes (1Jn2:16; Ps119:37; Job31:1)
The world uses the lust of the eyes to lure you to buy or do something, hence why there are commercials. Eyes, believe it or not have an appetite
“Feast your eyes on this”
It was an issue to the Psalmist and to Job (Ps119:37; Job31:1)
Psalm 119:37 NASB95
37 Turn away my eyes from looking at vanity, And revive me in Your ways.
and look at Job
Job 31:1 NASB95
1 “I have made a covenant with my eyes; How then could I gaze at a virgin?
It is the lust of the eyes that makes billion’s of dollars every year. I found this nugget, to illustrate this.
Current revenue estimates for the US range from $9bn to $97bn a year. The latter figure looks excessive, but a conservative estimate is $15bn. That makes it bigger than not only Netflix ($11.7bn) but also Hollywood as a whole ($11.1bn) and Viacom ($13.3bn). In other words, online porn is huge.”
That comes from article written by guardian.com that deals with freedom from on line pornography addiction.
OK, now back to some biblical example
Lust of the eyes with Achan (Jos7)- His lust, caused action, his action caused defeat of Israel and then the death of he and his family because of the lust of the eyes.
(Transition) Think about those Jones’s you have heard the term “keeping up with the Jones” well that comes from the lust of the eyes and our next one lust of the boastful pride of life.
Boastful pride of life (1Jn2:16; Jm4:4; 1Jn3:13; Jm1:27)
God has given us everything, not withheld anything including His Son. God’s glory is rich and full, man’s glory is vain and empty. We want to impress by “stuff” that is what keeping up with the Jones’s is about. Trying to outdo each other. If you are doing that, what are you not doing? Not seeking God first!
The credit card, the finance industry loves this lust for it finances houses, cars, clothes etc that would not be afforded on cash.
Once the Christian starts to compromise in any of these areas they loose the priority of seeking God first, enjoying and resting in the Fathers love and provision and the desire to do the Fathers will.
This does not happen overnight, but over time.
First by becoming a friend of the world
James 4:4 NASB95
4 You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
So when you don’t comprise, don’t be surprised by the worlds thoughts on you.
1 John 3:13 NASB95
13 Do not be surprised, brethren, if the world hates you.
Don’t be a friend of the world (1Jn2:15-16; Jm4:4) because it can lead to you being stained by the world
James 1:27 NASB95
27 Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
Compromise with the world, comfort with the world and the world system leads to being conformed to the world (Rom12:1) and may lead to the Christian being condemned right along with the world (1Cor11:32)
(Transition) John warns, to protect not to condemn, but to get you to not love the Lord because of what the Christian is.

Because what the Christian is

Knowledge without application is just knowledge, but knowledge with application is wisdom and we are to be wise Christians. So, let’s look for some quick applications to take away.
1 John 2:14 NASB95
14 I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
John addresses all believers (little children)
All who believe and have been born again through obedience to the gospel - he is reminding them their sins are forgiven and they belong to God because of Jesus name sake
John addresses young men (the conquerors)
Victory in overcoming the evil one by the Knowledge and application of the word of God. It is the word that defeats Satan.
John address the fathers (mature believers with intimate knowledge of God through the Word and the continual application)
These are the ones who know the dangers of the world and they are not easily persuaded to the ways of the world for they live in the joy of the Lord and for the Lord.
Remember where the world is going (1Jn2:17)
1 John 2:17 NASB95
17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
One day the world system will be gone, but the one who does the will of God will live forever with God, be in His presence.
We are about out of time, there are great lessons in this short passage,
DO NOT LOVE THE WORLD seek Him first (Mt6:33) and enjoy the all things given.
Matthew 6:33 NASB95
33 “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
