Give Scripture: 2 Chronicles 35:1-10

2 Chronicles 35:1–10 KJV 1900
1 Moreover Josiah kept a passover unto the Lord in Jerusalem: and they killed the passover on the fourteenth day of the first month. 2 And he set the priests in their charges, and encouraged them to the service of the house of the Lord, 3 And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel, which were holy unto the Lord, Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build; it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders: serve now the Lord your God, and his people Israel, 4 And prepare yourselves by the houses of your fathers, after your courses, according to the writing of David king of Israel, and according to the writing of Solomon his son. 5 And stand in the holy place according to the divisions of the families of the fathers of your brethren the people, and after the division of the families of the Levites. 6 So kill the passover, and sanctify yourselves, and prepare your brethren, that they may do according to the word of the Lord by the hand of Moses. 7 And Josiah gave to the people, of the flock, lambs and kids, all for the passover offerings, for all that were present, to the number of thirty thousand, and three thousand bullocks: these were of the king’s substance. 8 And his princes gave willingly unto the people, to the priests, and to the Levites: Hilkiah and Zechariah and Jehiel, rulers of the house of God, gave unto the priests for the passover offerings two thousand and six hundred small cattle, and three hundred oxen. 9 Conaniah also, and Shemaiah and Nethaneel, his brethren, and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad, chief of the Levites, gave unto the Levites for passover offerings five thousand small cattle, and five hundred oxen. 10 So the service was prepared, and the priests stood in their place, and the Levites in their courses, according to the king’s commandment.

Give A Review

So, Josiah assumed the throne at 8. He sought the Lord for himself at 16. He began to restructure and reorder the Kingdom at 20. He purified the lands of the false gods, false alters, high places, groves, and other things that were displeasing to God. Once he purified the lands of Israel, he returns to Jerusalem and begins restoration of the Temple which had fallen into physical disrepair. He calls for skilled laborers to begin work and instructs the priests to pay for it using the monies they had saved up.
In that process, the priests found a book of the law hidden with the money. They read it to the King who is despondent due to the failure of the Kingdom to heed the Word of God. He sent the priests to get word from the Prophetess Huldah, who let them know that God was not pleased with what he had seen during the time of the Kings and she made God’s wrath abundantly clear. However, she made clear that God’s will was to withhold his anger and wrath from Josiah and to gather him up to his fathers before that season of wrath came.
We closed out last week talking about the actions of the King to teach the people the right way to hear and obey the Word of the Lord. We finished last week, with the King and the people of God making a commitment to serve the Lord God and honor his word. And while Josiah was King, the people of God honored their word.
Three Key Takeaways
When God gives a word, for good or ill, his word is binding and cannot be changed by any action of man.
You cannot talk God out of blessing somebody and nobody can talk God out of cursing you if that is his choice.
We cannot allow ourselves to look at the life of Hezekiah as an indicator of our ability to change God’s mind because ultimately if it is not in the will of God your request does not matter.
It is our job to share that which God gives unto us, this includes everything from prophetic words to the gifts given us by the spirit.
You cannot be selfish with what is not yours and anything God gives you represents something that is not yours.
God’s word should be heeded even if he does not heed yours.
You praising God should not be conditional upon what he does for you but is instead due to him because of his sovereign rule over the universe.

Scripture Study

In this lesson we will see Josiah in a light that I think is consequential to us in this time as saints of the Most High Gods. We will see Josiah as a typology of the most High God. Now, I have to be clear, throughout the Old Testament their are times when we see God in action through Jesus Christ who appears in the scripture.
It was Christ who appeared to Abraham as Melchizedek.
It was Christ who appeared to Jacob as the Angel of the Lord.
Christ showed himself in the flames of the furnace with the three Hebrew Boys.
Many examples of this are in the Word.
However, their are also times when PEOPLE or THINGS in the scripture serve as a representation of God or the Christ without actually being the Christ.
This is the difference between a Theophany and a Typology.
A Theophany is an encounter with God wherein God is revealed to you but does so indirectly.
Think Moses and the backside of God’s glory.
Abraham and Melchizedek
Jacob and the Angel of the Lord
Nebuchadnezzar and the Son of Man
A Typology is the systematic studying of two or more things to find and understand the correlation.
So we can look at the Tabernacle of the OT and see it is a typology of the Christ in the NT
We can look at Moses & Elijah of the OT and see the typology of the two prophets in the NT
We can look at the marriage of Adam & Eve and see the typology of the Church and Christ in the NT
In this way, we can look at Josiah and see the typology of Jesus Christ within him, which also sets the stage for the Christ coming through the lineage of David, Solomon, Hezekiah, Josiah, and so forth.
This takes us to our lesson for tonight, because I really want us to learn how to look at the scripture and see Christ in it because it is one thing to see yourself in it… but if you can see Christ in it you can see not what you are but what you are to become.
2 Chronicles 35:1 KJV 1900
1 Moreover Josiah kept a passover unto the Lord in Jerusalem: and they killed the passover on the fourteenth day of the first month.
At this point Josiah knows that his days are numbered but he kept the Passover.
It takes me back to the Garden when Jesus keeps the passover but says whatever thou doest… do it quickly.
Josiah has been given a word that God would gather him up to his fathers.
He knew he had to die to preserve the lineage of his fathers to ensure the promise of his Son.
Make no mistake it is the lineage of David but Jesus Christ is the Son of all the men of his lineage.
He knew what was coming but still fulfilled what the scripture commanded him.
2 Chronicles 35:2–3 KJV 1900
2 And he set the priests in their charges, and encouraged them to the service of the house of the Lord, 3 And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel, which were holy unto the Lord, Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build; it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders: serve now the Lord your God, and his people Israel,
Josiah honors the priests role in the society as teachers of the law.
It is a great honor to carry the burden of God and it is therefore incumbent on the people of God to not only honor the people (which he does in his speaking) but you must also encourage them as best you can.
It does no good for you to carry God’s glory if you cannot also share it with people through the teaching and impartation of the Word.
He tells them to put down the ark of the covenant and teach.
That said, I searched the scriptures to ensure that I was not missing something.
Where had the ark been?
Why were they carrying the ark?
The ark was intended to be carried in a certain way by a certain people, but in this case, their is not textual support for the ark being carried that I can find.
Some theologians speculate they carried it in a perverse ritual created by Manasseh.
Others speculate they were carrying it from a hiding place back into the Temple after hiding it from Manasseh.
The scriptures are unclear but what we know is that Josiah tells them to relieve themselves of the burden and to come teach the people.
2 Chronicles 35:4–5 KJV 1900
4 And prepare yourselves by the houses of your fathers, after your courses, according to the writing of David king of Israel, and according to the writing of Solomon his son. 5 And stand in the holy place according to the divisions of the families of the fathers of your brethren the people, and after the division of the families of the Levites.
Josiah is still talking to the Levites, when he tells them to organize themselves in accordance with their house and after the instruction given by David and Solomon.
The Law, as part of its function, divides up the house of Levi for its function in the house of God but is not very specific as to other individual functions necessary for the operations of the House of Levi.
Its kind of like giving you kids a list of chores and categorizing the chores by age.
I want the grass cut but not by the younger one because they may hurt themselves.
I do not care which of the oldest kids does it but one of them needs to do it.
So David and Solomon, as part of their reign establish further order in the House of Levi which helps to coincide more with the operation of Temple as opposed to a Tabernacle, two things where were slightly different.
2 Chronicles 35:6 KJV 1900
6 So kill the passover, and sanctify yourselves, and prepare your brethren, that they may do according to the word of the Lord by the hand of Moses.
Brethren speaks of the rest of the Kingdom who the Levites were to lead to God through the fulfillment of scripture.
Are we leading other people to God throughout actions?
Are we preparing our brethren for the season we are in and for that which is to come?
2 Chronicles 35:7 KJV 1900
7 And Josiah gave to the people, of the flock, lambs and kids, all for the passover offerings, for all that were present, to the number of thirty thousand, and three thousand bullocks: these were of the king’s substance.
Josiah ensures the people have to give by giving of himself to the people.
He does not make this offering on their behalf nor does he offer it for himself.
But he makes a sacrifice of his OWN SUBSTANCE for the SUBSTANCE of others.
Knowing the scripture has allowance for people who may not have to give.
You can give two doves or bread and other things if you do not have an oxen or other animal.
Yet he does it anyway.
2 Chronicles 35:8 KJV 1900
8 And his princes gave willingly unto the people, to the priests, and to the Levites: Hilkiah and Zechariah and Jehiel, rulers of the house of God, gave unto the priests for the passover offerings two thousand and six hundred small cattle, and three hundred oxen.
Lead by example
2 Chronicles 35:9 KJV 1900
9 Conaniah also, and Shemaiah and Nethaneel, his brethren, and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad, chief of the Levites, gave unto the Levites for passover offerings five thousand small cattle, and five hundred oxen.
Good leadership bears good followers.
Good followers make good leaders.
2 Chronicles 35:10 KJV 1900
10 So the service was prepared, and the priests stood in their place, and the Levites in their courses, according to the king’s commandment.
Everything was done as the King commanded and everyone stood in their place and it all went better for people staying in their place.
Once again seeing the importance of submission which is the entire premise of the Kingdom of God.
Satan’s problem is a lack of willingness to submit to the authority and power of God and a desire to subvert that which was also given to man under the auspice of God’s will.

Provide Key Takeaways

Will you die to your own self and desires to become what God desires for you?
Josiah saw his role and the role of the Levites as to lead the people to God… are we doing this?
What example are you setting through your leadership, either at home, work, school, or church?
