John 18 1-11
there is a lot of the narrative John has left out
the garden prayer great drops of blood
sleeping disciples
being ministered by angels
Judas giving the kiss
these accounts show the humanity of Jesus
on the other hand John is always portraying the Deity of Jesus
the miracles / signs that John gave us demonstrate that Jesus is the promised Messiah
so as we look at this passage today. lets look at the arrest of God
Read John 18 1-11,

John 13 Jesus washes the disciples feet
telling Judas to go and do quickly
telling the rest that He would go away
telling Peter he would deny Him
Chapter 14
I’m going to prepare a place for you
you will do greater works than these
the Holy Spirit is coming to be in you
He will teach you and comfort you
Chapter 15
you will produce fruit because you are in me
the world will hate you

The Holy Spirit will convict the world
the promise to return

Chapter 18 when He said these things
When Jesus had said these things, he went out with his disciples to the other side of the ravine of the Kidron, where there was a garden into which he and his disciples entered.
back in chapter 13 Judas started with them in the upper room
they were in the upper room celebrating the Passover
He now is going out with His disciples
the ravine is dry most of the year
After Yeshua had said all this, he went out with his talmidim across the stream that flows in winter through the Vadi Kidron, to a spot where there was a grove of trees; and he and his talmidim went into it.
William Barclay Gospel of John
says that as many as 256,000 people flock to Jerusalem for the passover
each family had a lamb
he says the blood in channeled into the Kidron valley
Jesus took His disciples to an olive grove on the other side of the brook

as we look at the arrest we see Jesus is in full control of the situation
When Peter was preaching his first sermon to the Israelite people
“Israelite men, listen to these words! Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with deeds of power and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, just as you yourselves know—
this man, delivered up by the determined plan and foreknowledge of God, you executed by nailing to a cross through the hand of lawless men.
It was Gods plan for Jesus to be executed
The people of Jerusalem did the deed
though the Romans who were in charge
in Matthew we see the timing
And it happened that when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples,
“You know that after two days the Passover takes place, and the Son of Man will be handed over in order to be crucified.”
Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, who was named Caiaphas,
and plotted in order that they could arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.

Jesus replied, “It is he to whom I dip the piece of bread and give it to him.” Then after dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.
And after the piece of bread, then Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you are doing, do quickly!”
and Judas left to betray Jesus
Judas knowing the favorite places of Jesus
(Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, also knew about the place, because Jesus often gathered there with his disciples.)
Jesus went to a place well known to Judas
So Judas, taking the cohort and officers from the chief priests and from the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
cohort- about 600 soldiers
officers- temple police
they were not taking any chances
weapons and lights, full moon plenty of light
Jesus has walked through the crowd before
Jesus who healed the sick fed the 5000
deep in their heart they know Jesus is God
The Jesus came out to them
Then Jesus, because he knew all the things that were coming upon him, went out and said to them, “Who are you looking for?”
their reply
They replied to him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He said to them, “I am he.” (Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, was also standing with them.)
lets look at this same verse in the Complete Jewish Bible
“Yeshua from Natzeret,” they answered. He said to them, “I AM.” Also standing with them was Y’hudah, the one who was betraying him.
I Am the Name of God
When he said, “I AM,” they went backward from him and fell to the ground.
it’s sorta like what will happen in the future
so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven and of those on earth and of those under the earth,
every one of that arresting party bowed before the person they are arresting
the temple police who hate Him
the battle hardened army
Judas the betrayer
Malchus the servant
they cold not stop themselves from bowing to God
Then he asked them again, “Who are you looking for?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.”
Jesus replied, “I said to you that I am he! So if you are looking for me, let these men go,”
Jesus is in complete control, of even his arrest
He tells them to leave His men alone
John 18:9 (LEB)
in order that the word that he had spoken would be fulfilled: “Those whom you have given to me—I have not lost anyone of them.
When I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given to me, and guarded them, and none of them has perished except the son of destruction, in order that the scripture would be fulfilled.
Peter is now going to protect God

I have a sword!!
I will protect you Jesus
the whole army is bowing to you
you made them so they wont touch me
I feel brave, see me roar
You said that I will deny you Jesus… well look at me now
Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. (Now the name of the slave was Malchus.)
Jesus is still protecting Peter
he heals Malchus ear keeping Peter from getting in trouble with the authorities
So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into its sheath! The cup that the Father has given me—shall I not drink it?”

dominoes are set up one after another and you push the first one and the res will fall in their time
God’s plan for Jesus to die for the sin of the world
but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb
who was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has been revealed in these last times for you

Be born of a Virgin without a father. so He would not inherit a sin nature

Live a sinless life, so He could be the perfect sacrifice

to pick a disciple who would not believe in him but betray Him for money

make the Sanhedrin afraid they would lose their way of life

Force the Sanhedrin to crucify Him on Pentecost

Choose a place that He could be found

God came to Earth to be born human to redeem His people from their sins on the cross
God is arrested for our sins
these dominoes were set up by God before time began
knowing that man would fall
knowing that we would need a savior, redeemer
knowing that we could not be in His presence unless we were changed, made alive
the Dominoes end at the cross
