What major things happened before the 10 commandments were given?
God’s chosen people were captive slave in Egypt for about 400 years.
God raised a deliver in their midst named Moses asked Pharoah to let them go, if not they will suffer consequences
They refused and God sent plagues after plagues but Pharoah still persisted.
God’s chosen people were not stricken by the plagues and eventually they were let go after the God took the life of ever-firstborn in Egypt, except those whom followed his commandment to put the blood on the doorpost and prepare the lamb and eat of it.
After they left and took a bunch of gold and valuables with them Pharoah sent an army after them and God split the sea so they can cross safely.
The army went after them but God let the sea swallow them up.
They were then in the desert wilderness and God led them by a pillar of Fire by night and a pillar of Smoke by day.
Then God fed the people in the wilderness with manna, which was replenished each morning.
Then God gave them water to drink through a rock which was split into two.
Q: Why is this significant to the 10 Commandments?
Location : Mount Sinai
the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments and be ready for the third day. For on the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. And you shall set limits for the people all around, saying, ‘Take care not to go up into the mountain or touch the edge of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall be put to death. No hand shall touch him, but he shall be stoned or shot; whether beast or man, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds a long blast, they shall come up to the mountain.”
On the morning of the third day there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled. Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain. Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the Lord had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly. And as the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in thunder. The Lord came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain. And the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.
Context - Fear God, He is Holy and powerful
He is mighty and just
We cannot stand in His fully glory
His presence cannot and should not be taken lightly
His commandments are not something to take lightly
The Lord and King of the Universe is about to instruct you..... listen closely.
And God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
Before the commandment is given a reminder is presented.
You were slaves
You had nothing of value
I chose you, not the Egyptians
(God chooses whom He wishes)
God chooses the least likely
Q: What is the purpose of God starting off the Ten Commandments with this statement?
This freedom from slavery was a gift, God acted first in starting the relationship
Q: With the gods of Egypt and the other nations what usually needs to happen for the people to get rewarded from their god?
They need to first sacrifice something,
They need to please their god first and then that god will give them something.
Yahweh is different in that He acted first, he first loved us, he first freed us from slavery.
1st Commandment
“You shall have no other gods before me.
Q: What do you observe?
Usually order matter, why is this the first commandment?
The first statement before this shows God’s faithfulness from His promise to Abraham to bless his descendants.
Not having other gods is a demonstration of our faithfulness to Him.
Remember how God referred to the nation of Israel when they worshipped other gods. He used strong language, whoring.
God’s relationship to the body is believers is often portrayed as His bride and he calls His bride to be faithful to Him alone.
If this commandment is not followed then the rest of the commandments cannot follow either. It is the groundwork, the foundation for the rest of the commandments.
Q: What kinds of false gods were the Israelites prone to worshipping at that time?
Q: What kinds of false gods are believers prone to worshipping in modern times?
2nd Commandment
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
Q: What does this verse mean?
Q: Why is this commandment important?
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
God does not have a physical body, we cannot look upon God fully and live
But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.”
Even at mouth Sinai the people when hearing God were afraid and questioned how they were still alive after hearing God’s voice.
Creating a physical resemblance of this Almighty God would diminish His splendor.
Q: Does this commandment apply to us today? How?
Take away: God has brought you through much in your own life already. You have had and will continue to have situations that God faithfully brings you through. Remember those times that he has rescued you from. The situations that seemed impossible to escape yet He pulled you through.
Now that God who has been faithful to you first is commanding you to be faithful to him in return.
Do not chase other gods. Money, success, women, prosperity. They will all fade away and leave you empty.
God is and will the the only one who can fufill your life ultimately.
Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology Ten Commandments
If it were necessary to prescribe every loving act and attitude, there would not be enough books in the world. What the commands do is to define the parameters beyond which love cannot exist. This much is then clear: if I love my neighbor I will not steal what belongs to him.
