The Good Shepherd IV (Psalm 23:3 & Acts 8:1-5) – He leads me in paths of righteousness

Psalm 23:3b He leads me in paths of righteousness As well as restoring our soul, this week, we’ll look at how the Lord calls us, leads us and even drives us, along the right paths. Our passages:  Acts 8:1-5 & Psalm 23:3.

— God, as shepherd

The image of God as a shepherd points to his continual direction, guidance and care for his people.

Shepherd as a title for God

Ps 80:1 See also Ge 49:24; Ecc 12:11

Psalm 80:1 KJV 1900
1 Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, Thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; Thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth.

24 But his bow abode in strength, And the arms of his hands were made strong By the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (From thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:)
Ecclesiastes 12:11 KJV 1900
11 The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.

God’s people are his flock

Israel is God’s flock

Ezekiel 34:31 KJV 1900
31 And ye my flock, the flock of my pasture, are men, and I am your God, saith the Lord God.

The church is God’s flock

1 Peter 5:2 KJV 1900
2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
Luke 12:32 KJV 1900
32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
Acts 20:28–29 KJV 1900
28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. 29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.

The tasks undertaken by God the shepherd

Psalm 23:5–6 KJV 1900
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

16 For Israel slideth back as a backsliding heifer: Now the Lord will feed them as a lamb in a large place.
Micah 7:14 KJV 1900
14 Feed thy people with thy rod, the flock of thine heritage, Which dwell solitarily in the wood, in the midst of Carmel: Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old.

The shepherd protects

9 Save thy people, And bless thine inheritance: Feed them also, and lift them up for ever.
Genesis 49:23–24 KJV 1900
23 The archers have sorely grieved him, And shot at him, and hated him: 24 But his bow abode in strength, And the arms of his hands were made strong By the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (From thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:)

The shepherd saves those who are lost or scattered

Jer 31:10 See also Ps 119:176; Isa 53:6; Eze 34:11-16; Mt 18:12-14 pp Lk 15:3-7

Jeremiah 31:10 KJV 1900
10 Hear the word of the Lord, O ye nations, And declare it in the isles afar off, and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, And keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock.
Psalm 119:176 KJV 1900
176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; For I do not forget thy commandments.
Isaiah 53:6 KJV 1900
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned every one to his own way; And the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Ezekiel 34:11–16 KJV 1900
11 For thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out. 12 As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. 13 And I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country. 14 I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie in a good fold, and in a fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel. 15 I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord God. 16 I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment.
Matthew 18:12–14 KJV 1900
12 How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray? 13 And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray. 14 Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.
Luke 15:3–7 KJV 1900
3 And he spake this parable unto them, saying, 4 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? 5 And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. 7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

The shepherd judges

Eze 34:17-22 See also Jer 23:1; Zec 10:2-3; 11:16; Mt 25:32-46

Ezekiel 34:17–22 KJV 1900
17 And as for you, O my flock, thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I judge between cattle and cattle, between the rams and the he goats. 18 Seemeth it a small thing unto you to have eaten up the good pasture, but ye must tread down with your feet the residue of your pastures? and to have drunk of the deep waters, but ye must foul the residue with your feet? 19 And as for my flock, they eat that which ye have trodden with your feet; and they drink that which ye have fouled with your feet. 20 Therefore thus saith the Lord God unto them; Behold, I, even I, will judge between the fat cattle and between the lean cattle. 21 Because ye have thrust with side and with shoulder, and pushed all the diseased with your horns, till ye have scattered them abroad; 22 Therefore will I save my flock, and they shall no more be a prey; and I will judge between cattle and cattle.
Jeremiah 23:1 KJV 1900
1 Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the Lord.
Zechariah 10:2–3 KJV 1900
2 For the idols have spoken vanity, And the diviners have seen a lie, And have told false dreams; They comfort in vain: Therefore they went their way as a flock, They were troubled, because there was no shepherd. 3 Mine anger was kindled against the shepherds, And I punished the goats: For the Lord of hosts hath visited his flock the house of Judah, And hath made them as his goodly horse in the battle.
Zechariah 11:16 KJV 1900
16 For, lo, I will raise up a shepherd in the land, Which shall not visit those that be cut off, Neither shall seek the young one, Nor heal that that is broken, Nor feed that that standeth still: But he shall eat the flesh of the fat, And tear their claws in pieces.
Matthew 25:32–46 KJV 1900
32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: 33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. 41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: 43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. 44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. 46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Psalm 78:70–72 KJV 1900
70 He chose David also his servant, And took him from the sheepfolds: 71 From following the ewes great with young he brought him To feed Jacob his people, And Israel his inheritance. 72 So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; And guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.
Ezekiel 34:23–24 KJV 1900
23 And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. 24 And I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them; I the Lord have spoken it.

Acts 8:1–5 KJV 1900
1 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him. 3 As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison. 4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word. 5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.
Psalm 23:3 KJV 1900
3 He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Recap The rest and plenty described in Psalm 23:1-3 also carry a bitter side to them.

Psalm 23:1–3 KJV 1900
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

This rest and plenty is so amazing because we are not as we ought to be.

The events of the fall (Gen 3) brought about an ongoing tragedy for humanity, which is evident in our lives (e.g. death and suffering).

We also need to be restored because of wear and tear from work and experiences.

Therefore we need to constantly ask for forgiveness and strength from God.

Fortunately, God looks at our potential, not us as we are.

As we are restored, we have a sense of purpose and reason to live.

Some may be reminded of the first question answered in the Westiminister Shorter Catechism:

What is man’s chief aim?

Westminister Catechism Question 1 answer

To glorify God.

We enjoy meeting at least a part of this aim now. In Christ’s strength we can change and become what we are in him: holy and righteous.

We’re not there yet, but it is possible.

Explanation

Today we’ll look at the second part of verse 3.

Psalm 23:3
Psalm 23:3 KJV 1900
3 He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

3 points and then application:

1. Our shepherd is a qualified guide Some years ago A Pastor went on a holiday overseas.

He were part of a Tour party travelling through Italy Greece, Athens, and Ephesus.

Each time we were at a place we would have a local tour guide appointed to us.

The local guide would have local experience and understanding of the local culture that was useful to us.

No-one else could explain the area we were in as well.

Through life, the Lord Jesus is our guide.

He is qualified to guide us because:

1) He knows his sheep very well He knows

L) the condition and weaknesses of his sheep the best path for his sheep what the sheep have experienced our current condition.

2) He’s experienced all we have experienced Hebrews 2:17 He has experienced being human and is able to sympathise with us.

Hebrews 2:17 KJV 1900
17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
Hebrews 2:17 KJV 1900
17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
Psalm 23:3b KJV 1900
3 He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Psalm 23:3b KJV 1900
3 He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Hebrews 4:15 3) He knows the right paths to take for our safety and productivity

Hebrews 4:15 KJV 1900
15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Our passage today states: “He guides us in paths of righteousness”.

We don’t know which paths to take in life: many are fraught with danger.

Proverbs 14:12

Proverbs 14:12 KJV 1900
12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, But the end thereof are the ways of death.

From time to time we will choose ways that are wrong.

The choices before us may be good opportunities that we mustn’t miss.

Matthew 9:9

Matthew 9:9 KJV 1900
9 And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.

We have to apply some discernment to following Jesus.

He was without sin: we can’t follow him on repentance from sin as He never needed to change.

In these cases there are servants of the Lord we can follow and take example from:

Philippians 3:17 2. He guides his sheep

Philippians 3:17 KJV 1900
17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.

He guides by engaging in the moment by moment management of his sheep.

Our shepherd is an intensive manager; intensive in style and substance.

In terms of belief in God, there are theists and deist.

A deist believes God is hands-off: winding up the clock at the beginning of creation and then letting things run.

If we take our guide from the Bible, we can be theists: Ephesians 1:11b

Ephesians 1:11b KJV 1900
11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

He guides us in three ways:

1) Calling

He calls us personally, through His Word (the Bible), and through depositing the Holy Spirit in us.

John 10:4-5 We recognise God is has spoken to us.

John 10:4–5 KJV 1900
4 And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. 5 And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.

2 Timothy 3:16

2 Timothy 3:16 KJV 1900
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

All of God’s word is a signal and call to us to follow Christ.

John 16:5-13 teaches more about the Holy Spirit.

John 16:5–13 KJV 1900
5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? 6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. 12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

2) Leading Jeus leads from the front: by example. His main example is sacrifice.

Matthew 16:24

Matthew 16:24 KJV 1900
24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

We should become living sacrifices to God.

Romans 12:1

Romans 12:1 KJV 1900
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

3) Driving We may not think of this, thinking the sheep follow along willingly.

But subtly (and sometimes less subtly) He drives us on the paths we need to take.

Shepherds usually have dogs. They have a heading dog, such as a border collie which is quiet and leads the sheep on.

In NZ the shepherd also has a hunter dog which is noisy and works from the back; moving sheep that are refusing to move. Scripture indicates that Jesus works to drive us as well.

Examples from scripture:

Joseph had 11 brothers who didn’t like him because he was the favourite, so they sold him into slavery. While in slavery he was accused of rape and put into prison. If God had informed Joseph all that was going to come, would he have followed the path he did?

Genesis 45:8

Genesis 45:8 KJV 1900
8 So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.

God’s providence brought him to Egypt.

Moses, likewise, was called by God when he saw a burning bush. He was quite reluctant to lead God’s people out of Egypt and God had to encourage him along the way.

Esther is beautiful and brought before the king of the time. She is put there so that she may rescue the people from a coming genocide.

Jonah didn’t agree with what God wants him to do. He goes the other way. God brings him back and re-commands him.

Stephen was the first martyr for the church. He was stoned to death, following which there was a lot of persecution. Except for the apostles three members of the church were scattered.

Acts 1:8 But by the time of Acts 8 the apostles hadn’t travelled much. Events were required to scatter them.

Acts 1:8 KJV 1900
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Acts 8 KJV 1900
1 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him. 3 As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison. 4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word. 5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. 6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed. 8 And there was great joy in that city. 9 But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: 10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. 11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries. 12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: 15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: 16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. 18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, 19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. 20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. 21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. 22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. 23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. 24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me. 25 And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans. 26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. 27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, 28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet. 29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. 30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? 31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. 32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: 33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. 34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. 36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. 39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.

Acts 15:37-40 recounts a disagreement between Paul and Barnabas that caused them to split up, taking the gospel in two different directions.

Acts 15:37–40 KJV 1900
37 And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark. 38 But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work. 39 And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus; 40 And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.

God drove me into preaching. and family circumstances brought me into ministry.

We can sometimes be a little comfortable and lazy, but God can drive us along the path we need to take.

Application

The Lord’s guidance is for us.

We need to watch out as there could be immediate danger present in our lives.

That’s not a time for gentle guidance, but for immediate action.

We need to wake up. As is said: He who snoozes looses.

We lie down in green pastures so we can ruminate and be able to grow.

We don’t lie down to sleep: we are not to participate in comfort for comfort’s sake.

Don’t rest on your lauerels

Revelation 3:1-2

Revelation 3:1–2 KJV 1900
1 And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. 2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.

The church in Sardis had a name for being a successful church, but we can’t rely on past successes.

We need to keep moving forwards and we can do this with confidence as believers, using our shepherd’s wisdom.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Proverbs 3:5–6 KJV 1900
5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; And lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, And he shall direct thy paths.

Rely on God’s wisdom

Rely on God’s ways and God’s wisdom to guide you.

Romans 8:28

Romans 8:28 KJV 1900
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Even though we may not understand what to do, God knows and we can walk on in wisdom, sometimes being driven and sometimes being called.

The paths ahead are full of hazards. There are:

Internal issues: sin in us

Intrinsic hazards: related to the culture and times

Inherent hazards: present always in a fallen world.

Thank the Lord that “He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”

May I suggest 7 ATTITUDES we may need in order for us to walk in the Paths of Righteousness.

A commonly held but serious misconception about sheep is that they can just “get along anywhere.”anywhere.”

The truth is quite the reverse. No other class of livestock requires more careful handling, more detailed direction, than do sheep.

No doubt David, as a shepherd himself, had learned this firsthand from tough experience.

He knew beyond dispute that if the flock was to flourish and the owner’s reputation was to be held in high esteem as a good manager, the sheep had to be constantly under his meticulous control and guidance.

Keller, W. Phillip. A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 (p. 58). Zondervan. Kindle Edition.

The greatest single safeguard that a shepherd has in handling his flock is to keep them on the move.

In a word—there must be a predetermined plan of action, a deliberate, planned rotation from one grazing ground to another in line with right and proper principles of sound management.

This is precisely the sort of action David had in mind when he spoke of being led in paths of righteousness.

Keller, W. Phillip. A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 (pp. 59-60). Zondervan. Kindle Edition.

Scripture points out that most of us are a stiff-necked and stubborn lot.

We prefer to follow our own fancies and turn to our own ways.

(Isaiah 53:6).

Isaiah 53:6 KJV 1900
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned every one to his own way; And the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Allow us to note some things mentioned in this verse.

1.We are Sheep ( sheep are dumb )

2.We Go astray , We as sheep will go astray

)תָּעָה (tâʻâh | taw-aw(

Strong's: to vacillate, i.e. reel or stray

KJV: (cause to) go astray, deceive, dissemble, (cause to, make to) err, pant, seduce, (make to) stagger, (cause to) wander, be out of the way.

Cognate Group: H8583 (Toi), H8442 (error), H8590 (Taanach), H8582 (go astray)

3. We because we are sheep astray we TURNED.

פָּנָה (pânâh | paw-naw')

Derivation: a primitive root;

Strong's: to turn; by implication, to face, i.e. appear, look, etc.

KJV: appear, at (even-) tide, behold, cast out, come on, [idiom] corner, dawning, empty, go away, lie, look, mark, pass away, prepare, regard, (have) respect (to), (re-) turn (aside, away, back, face, self), [idiom] right (early).

Cognate Group: H3312 (Jephunneh), H6437 (appear), H6441 (inner), H3942 (before), H6442 (inner), H6440 (accept), H6439 (Peniel)

4. We Have TURNED everyone to HIS OWN WAY.

ֶּרֶךְ (derek | deh'-rek)

Derivation: from דָּרַךְ;

Strong's: a road (as trodden); figuratively, a course of life or mode of action, often adverb

KJV: along, away, because of, [phrase] by, conversation, custom, (east-) ward, journey, manner, passenger, through, toward, (high-) (path-) way(-side), whither(-soever).

Keller, W. Phillip. A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 (p. 61). Zondervan. Kindle Edition.

And this we do deliberately, repeatedly, even to our own disadvantage.

There is something almost terrifying about the destructive self-determination of a human being.

It is inexorably interlocked with personal pride and self-assertion.

We insist we know what is best for us even though the disastrous results may be self-evident.

Just as sheep will blindly, habitually, stupidly follow one another along the same little trails until they become ruts that erode into gigantic gullies, so we humans cling to the same habits that we have seen ruin other lives.

Turning to “my own way” simply means doing what I want.

It implies that I feel free to assert my own wishes and carry out my own ideas.

And this I do in spite of every warning. We read in Proverbs 14:12 : Proverbs 16:25,

Proverbs 14:12 KJV 1900
12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, But the end thereof are the ways of death.
Proverbs 16:25 KJV 1900
25 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, But the end thereof are the ways of death.

Over the many weeks I have learnt some things One thing

is

If we are not WILLING,WANT or just REFUSE to make the Change in the OBVIOUS areas of Life.

How can we make the Changes in the Not so Obvious areas of Life.

In contrast to which Christ the Good Shepherd comes gently and says, John 14:6 and also in John 10:10 .

John 14:6 KJV 1900
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 10:10 KJV 1900
10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

The difficult point is that most of us don’t want to come.

We don’t want to follow

We don’t want to be led in the paths of righteousness.

Somehow it goes against our grain.

We actually prefer to turn to our own way even though it may take us straight into trouble.

The stubborn, self-willed, proud, self-sufficient sheep that persists in pursuing its old paths and grazing on its old polluted ground will end up a bag of bones on ruined land.

The world we live in is full of such folk.

Broken homes, broken hearts, derelict lives, and twisted personalities remind us everywhere of men and women who have gone their own way

. We have a sick society struggling to survive on beleaguered land.

The greed and selfishness of mankind leave behind a legacy of ruin and remorse

. Amid all this chaos and confusion Christ the Good Shepherd comes and says,

( Mark 8:34).

Mark 8:34 KJV 1900
34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

But most of us, even as Christians, simply don’t want to do this.

We don’t want to deny ourselves, give up our right to make our own decisions—

we don’t want to follow;

we don’t want to be led.

Of course, most of us, if confronted with this charge, would deny it.

We would assert vehemently that we are “led of the Lord.”

We would insist that we would follow wherever He leads.

We sing songs to this effect and give mental assent to the idea.

But as far as actually being led in paths of righteousness is concerned, precious few of us follow that path.

Actually this is the pivot point on which a Christian either “goes on” with God or “goes back” from following on.

There are many willful, wayward, indifferent, self-interested Christians who cannot really be classified as followers of Christ.

There are relatively few diligent disciples who forsake all to follow the Master.

Jesus never made light of the cost involved in following Him.

In fact, He made it painfully clear that it was a rugged life of rigid self-denial.

it entailed a whole new set of attitudes.

It was not the natural, normal way a person would ordinarily live, and this is what made the price so prohibitive to most people.

Keller, W. Phillip. A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 (p. 63). Zondervan. Kindle Edition.

Keller, W. Phillip. A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 (pp. 62-63). Zondervan. Kindle Edition.

In brief, seven fresh attitudes have to be acquired.

They are the equivalent of progressive forward movements onto new ground with God.

If one follows them, he will discover fresh pasturage; new, abundant life; and increased health, wholesomeness, and holiness in his walk with God.

Nothing will please Him more, and most certainly no other activity on our part will or can result in as great a benefit to other lives around us.

Keller, W. Phillip. A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 (p. 63). Zondervan. Kindle Edition.

1. Instead of loving myself most, I am willing to love Christ best and others more than myself.

2. Instead of being one of the crowd, I am willing to be singled out, set apart from the gang.

3. Instead of insisting on my rights, I am willing to forego them in favor of others.

4. Instead of being “boss,” I am willing to be at the bottom of the heap. Or to use sheep terminology, instead of being “top ram,” I’m willing to be a “tail-ender.”

5. Instead of finding fault with life and always asking “Why?” I am willing to accept every circumstance of life in an attitude of gratitude.

6. Instead of exercising and asserting my will, I am willing to learn to cooperate with His wishes and comply with His will.

7. Instead of choosing my own way, I am willing to choose to follow in Christ’s way: simply to do what He asks me to do.

(Acts 5:32).

Acts 5:32 KJV 1900
32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

(Philippians 2:13).

Philippians 2:13 KJV 1900
13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
