Have you ever had a life changing experience that altered everything in your life and changed the priorities of your life forever?

WHAT WERE THE MOST IMPORTANT PRIORITES OF THE EARLY CHURCH?

Acts 2:42

They continued steadfastly (gave constant attention to, continually devoted themselves to):

The Apostles’ Teaching:

They were giving constant attention to learning the principles of God’s Word. This was an evidence of their true conversion

  • They were hungry for God’s Word
  • They wanted to know everything about their Savior
  • They wanted to know how to serve their Lord
  • Are you hungry for God’s Word?  Do you crave it? (1 Peter 2:2)
  • Is God’s Word important to you?
  • Do you have an overwhelming desire to learn about your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ?

Fellowship:

Participating together in things we share in common.  This is the Greek “koinonia” and can refer to several things here:

  • Participating in ministry together
  • Worshiping together
  • Sharing their material possessions (3000 / 120 = 25)
  • Sharing the Lord’s Supper together – Remembering his sacrifice together
  • Sharing a common faith – believing the same things
  • Sharing a common hope of heaven
  • Sharing common joys
  • Sharing common enemies
  • Sharing an attitude of righteousness
  • They used all of these common things to strengthen and encourage each other. (Heb 10:25)

Breaking of Bread:

Although this could refer to the Lord’s Supper, it appears in context to refer to a common meal (Acts 2:46).

  • They broke bread together in their homes.
  • Breaking bread together is a sign of closeness and intimacy, a sign of agape love.
  • You usually don’t invite strangers into your home to eat.  This a place normally reserved for family. We are family.
  • They gave constant attention to breaking bread together because it brought them closer together in friendship and unity
  • The result of breaking bread together was gladness (joy, happiness) and simplicity of heart ( they were content)

Prayer:

Communication with God the Father

  • They directed their praise, worship, thanksgiving, needs, and desires to God
  • Jesus said "Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.  (John 16:24).
  • Paul said “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints;”  (Eph 6:18).
  • James said “You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask.”  (James 4:2).
