1. The Service of the Servant. chs.1-9
2. The Sacrifice of the Servant. chs.10-15
3. The Success of the Servant. ch.16
Using Romans 2:4b as our outline we see two LESSONS we learn that no one knows.
I. The Goodness of God.
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ,
It’s source. “beginning” ἀρχή (beginning, ruler)
Mt 1:1 - Jewish beginning
Luke 1:5 - Human beginning
John 1:1 - Divine from eternity
Mark 1:1 - Servant. Starts with the Gospel
It’s selection. “gospel” εὐαγγέλιον (good news)
Gospel. (n.1828) The history of the birth, life, actions, death, resurrection, ascension and doctrines of Jesus Christ.
Evangellion. Salvation through Christ, to be received by faith, on the basis of His expiatory death, His burial, resurrection, and ascension
It’s Saviour. “Jesus Christ” Ἰησοῦς Χριστός
II. Leadeth Thee To Repentance.
the Son of God;
An exclusive repentance. “the” τοῦ
The. This singles out One Way (John 14:6)
An exclusive revelation. “Son” υἱός
Son. Offspring, indicating the bloodline from the father.
This is why we know Mary was a virgin and why God is His Father.
An exclusive redemption. “of God” Θεοῦ
The One True God.
This shows the relevance of why “the Son of God” is in Mark 1:1.
While no English translation leaves this out several Greek Translations do: UBS 4th (has it in brakets), Tischendorf’s, and Westcott-Hort leave out “υἱός Θεοῦ”
Conclusion:
Identification with Christ is essential:
Identifying Jesus as a man helps show we believe He was here.
Identifying with Christ and His death helps show we have heard His message.
Identifying our Lord has indeed resurrected from the dead shows we have a Master!
