1 Corinthians 11:28 (NIV)
28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup.
26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.
1. Do the words that come out of your mouth reflect your belief in God?
Words are powerful: Chuck D. Public Enemy how much conflict did I cause by what I said.
Politicians forget what they say has weight.
Words that were spoken: To us, over us, and about us
Words are not equally weighted are they?
Why? Because words are not equally weighted.
The source of where the words come from are not equally weighted. - President / Pastor
Mom words are weighted and a Dad’s even more. - We all long to hear our Dad say he is proud of us. - Friend shared.
The recovery time from a hurtful word is not equally weighted.
“I said I am sorry” Why are we not back where we were before what I said?
Think about this. You can destroy someone with words and you don’t need to even be in the same room, state, or country.
2 We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.
We all stumble.
Anyone who never says the wrong thing is perfect.
Have you ever said the wrong thing?
3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.
Taken my girls horse back riding. Little bitty Sarah and 1,000 lb horse. Amazing how she could control that huge horse because of the bit in its mouth.
4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.
The tongue is only 4 inches and one of the smallest body parts.
It is the one muscle the never grows tired or weak. - Yikes
5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.

Your words have the potential to burn down your relationships.
Many of us have scorched our kids and loved ones with our sarcasm.
If you start a fire accidently you are still responsible for the fire you started.
6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
The tongue corrupts the whole body: You don’t divorce the tongue you divorce the whole person.
As your words go so goes your life.
7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind,
8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.
With the same tongue we can praise God and curse people.
10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
The End. On to the next subject.
What is James trying to say?
There is no once-and-for-all solution.
So what do we do?
Remember
Surrender
Confess
Don’t repeat the cycle.
