Reasons for reading God’s word
Reasons for reading God’s word
1. It increases our faith and trust in God
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
2. It fills us with the Holy Spirit (Gal 5:18) and the fruit of the spirit (5:22,23) so we think like God
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
3. It gives us truth. It stops us from believing lies
11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
4. It gives us victory over sin. And it gives us God’s wisdom to prevent problems, and troubles
9 BETH. Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word.
10 With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.
11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, That I might not sin against thee.
5. It gives us joy, makes us happy, and conquers depression.
16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts.
6. It will build us up in spiritual growth
32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
7. It explains how to be saved and gives assurance of salvation
13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
8. It cleanses us from sin.
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
9. It gives us patience, comfort, hope, peace, freedom, prosperity, and blessings
4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
10. It will make us disciples
31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
