Turn with me to
Romans 8: 1-4 8 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
The Holy Bible: King James Version. (2009). (Electronic Edition of the 1900 Authorized Version., Ro 8). Bellingham, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc.
Romans 8:1-17 gives us a tremendous, truth and conclusion to a memorable and marvelous argument. It’s memorable and marvelous because of the key phrase “In Christ”. Because in Adam came sin and condemnation but in Christ, Jesus there is no condemnation.
Condemnation In the Greek transliteration is the word Katakrima (Ka-tah-cream-ma) it literally means an adverse verdict 2x . It means to judge against.
One of the best ways to describe this difficult concept is to pen this little story. The terminology is simple but it’s meaning is relevant. Here’s how I was lead to describe the word Condemnation.
There were two brothers, and both of them were very good baseball players. And one day they were practicing batting in a lot near the local church. Each brother would take turns batting. 5 times for one and 5 times for the other.
Meanwhile the local pastor was in his office watching them through the church window. Then all of a sudden the baseball came crashing through the church window. The two boys said “man we’re in big trouble!” One of the brothers said “let’s get out of here fast, but the other brother said No brah that ain’t right!, Let’s go to church and tell somebody that it was an accident.
The pastor who had been watching them through the window in his office slowly rose from his desk and met the two boys right outside the church doors. They said Mr. Reverend we’re sorry, we didn’t mean to break the church window. The other brother said yeah , it was an accident. We were just trying to improve our batting average before baseball season starts.
The pastor said I saw you guys practicing and I know it was an accident. And the boys said we’ll pay for the window, we’ll do extra chores, cut grass, clean yards anything honest too pay for the broken window. The pastor was moved with compassion and said, No no no that won’t be necessary. I’ll get the window fixed before Sunday services. The pastor said you boy broke the church window you were wrong but I’m not going to condemn you. The boys ask why and what does condemn mean? It means a not guilty verdict. The pastor said because that’s what Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior did for us when he gave his life for the sins of the whole wide world. The boys said we never thought about it like that. The boys went home and told their parents what happened. The parents were impressed with the pastor’s compassion and wanted to know more about the word condemnation, so the whole family went to Sunday service. And after Mr. Reverend as the boys called him, after he preached the whole family joined the church. Brothers and sisters what a beautiful narrative that describes how God look beyond our faults and still declares us righteous through the blood of His Son Jesus Christ.
No Condemnation.
Freedom From Fear
The theme text, or the cryptogram, better known as the scriptures. In Romans 8:1-4 Does not say we didn’t make any mistakes, or any failures, or even no sins. As Christians we do fail we do make mistakes we often times fall, but other character in the bible fell too.
Abraham fell when he lied and said that Sarah was his sister and not his wife.
2.David fell when too Uriah wife Bathsheba and commited adultery with her and gad Uriah killed on the front lines in battle.
Then Peter tired to kill Gauis Malchus with the sword and Jesus told him put up your sword because hey that live by the sword dies by the sword. No one ever really gets away with their sins because the mills of justice grind slowly but they grind exceedingly fine. WE all must suffer the consequences because of our sins.
Just ask the dope addict , ask the alcoholic the gambler, the cheater, the robber, the swindler etc everybody pays for their sins but for the believer God does not Condemn the sinner only the sin. Listen the Law condemn; but the believer has a new relationship with the Law, and therefore; he/she cannot be condemned.
The writer of the text ( the Apostle Paul) gives three statements about the believer and the Law. All three statements conclude that there is no condemnation with Jesus Chrsit.
No Condemnation
No Katakrima (Ka-tah-cream-ma). Not Guilty 1. The Law cannot claim us Romans 8:2 2 The standards of the Spirit, who gives life through Christ Jesus, have set you free from the standards of sin and death.
GOD’S WORD Translation. (1995). (Ro 8:2). Grand Rapids: Baker Publishing Group.
Listen for the Law oof the Spirit of Life [ which is] in Christ, Jesus [The Lawof our new being] has freed me from the Law of sin and death.
brothers and sisters We have been made free from the Law of sin and death. Now we have life in the Spirit through Jesus Christ. The law no longer have jurisdiction over our lives.
2. The Law cannot condemn Us. Romans 8:3 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
The Holy Bible: King James Version. (2009). (Electronic Edition of the 1900 Authorized Version., Ro 8:3). Bellingham, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc.
Jesus Christ has already suffered that condemnation for us on the cross. The Law couldn’t save us, the law can only condemn, but Jesus saved us where the law condemned us. The law only condemns. And in our modern world there is something called “double jeopardy” which states that a man can not be tried twice for the same crime. And since Jesus Christ paid the penalty for our sins, and now that we are in Christ “ God will not condemn us”
3. The law cannot control us Romans 8:4 4 He did this so that we could be the kind of people the law correctly wants us to be. Now we do not live following our sinful selves, but we live following the Spirit.
The Everyday Bible: New Century Version. (2005). (Ro 8:4). Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson, Inc. Christian believers live a righteous life, not in the power of the Law, no no no, but in the power of the Holy Spirit. ( The Law does not have the power to produce holiness; the Law only reveals and point out and condemns sin. On the other hand the indwelling of the Holy Spirit enables Christian believers to walk in obedience to the Will of God.
