Why is Obedience necessary
Why is Obedience necessary
over the years many people have always tried to change the word’s of God, or try to question God. if God really care about us, do you think he would allow us worship him in any way possible, or do you think that God is too strict on the ways he wants to be worship? this morning we are going to be looking at these question and some more after class. the real goal for this morning is to be looking why Obedience to God is important to us as Christians.
so what doe Obedience mean?
Google definition of Obedience: “Compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to another’s authority.
when it comes to obedience within the Bible. we need to understand that when God had told someone to do something in a certain way it was meant to be done exactly as God had said it to be done. this would be consider absolute authority.
1. The Problem with Obedience with man:
Mankind has always had a problem with obey or listen to instructions. Mankind has always wanted to be in charge. the one to lead, the one to make the rules. if we truly love God, As Christian’s we would keep his Commandments. which is stated in John 15:14.
15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.
God has also told Mankind that we must never add to or to take anything out of his Commands which is stated in Deut 4:2.
2 You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.
Mankind has this problem even in the old testament and with the new testament also. People have always tried to change the words of God in order to fit their own desires. Mankind has always thought that they could always negotiate with God, or try to do the bear minimum in order to get by. Mankind has always said that they love God, yet they follow the doctrine’s of Man. Mankind has always thought of himself more than he think about God. another thing to think about is that when men thinks he is worshiping God, he also thinks that follow these doctrines written by other men it must be acceptable to God, and God will accept them. the issue is that man has always lead other astray. the wrong kind of worship could be very dangerous for the soul. Let look at John 14:21.
21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”
we as Christians need to understand if we love God, we will keep what the Bible says because the Bible is the word of God. many claim to believe in God, yet wish to change the things that are said within the Bible to fit their own desires. when it comes to loving God the creator, Obedience is necessary. look at 1st john 2:3.
3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.
Even John who states that if we keep his commandments we come to understand that we as Christians will come to know who God is. Once we know God, Does God not deserve the worship and Praise that he command us to do?
another thing that mankind must realize is that once he knows what God wants, he must not change the words of God, because if mankind changes the word of God. it is no long God’s word but man word. lets turn in our Bible to Jer 10:23.
23 O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself;
It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.
Even Jeremiah understood that if man was put in charge of saving himself man would be doom. see what happen if man follows a man-made doctrine or decision it nullify the promise made by God. the reasoning behind all of this is due to the fact when man follows man he is no longer following God. thus is worship is in vain meaning empty. turn in our Bibles Mark 7:7-8.
if we truly love God as Christians would we want our worship to be accepted by God? of course we would. any man who wish to follow God would want his worship to accepted and the man would do anything to try to receive the promises made by God. if we continue with the book of Mark 7:13
13 making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”
even Mark understood that if man held on to his traditions and kept to things that are not part of the church would it not be dangerous for the soul?
2. How thorough must Obedience be:
so in this next point we are going to be looking at examples to understand what it means to obey God. to truly understand let turn in our Bible to Rom 15:4.
4 For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.
we can also look at Proverbs 4:4.
4 He also taught me, and said to me:
“Let your heart retain my words;
Keep my commands, and live.
in order for us christian’s to attain eternal life, we must Obey God’s Commandments, God’s word (the Bible). we understand that there are people out there who change the meaning of the God’s word, and some have tried to take away certain words out of it. if you remember Deut 4:2.
2 You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.
we also need to come to an understand that we should not be trying to add anything to the Bible. is the Bible God’s word? Yes it is. if God is Perfect, then is his word the Bible perfect also? if we go back to Deut 4:2. we see that if man were to change the words or take away or add to the Bible then in all reality it is no long God’s word, but man foolishness. thus we see that mankind is rejecting God’s Commandments Mark 7:9.
9 He said to them, “All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.
if mankind were to reject the commandments of God what would happen to mankind? lets turn in our Bibles to Matt 7:21
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
Even Jesus said many will come, but few will enter the kingdom of God. it is very hard sometimes being a christian. Christ was never going to make it easy for those of us who claim to follow him. Christ is the son of God, the lamb that was sacrifice, Christ is even the mediator for us, but most importantly he is our King, and if we claim to follow should we not obey him? everyone want to go to heaven but many will try do what is easy for them in order to get to heaven. if you look at the last part in Matt 7:21 it states “but he who does the will of my Father in Heaven. He who obeys, he who is willing to listen, he who is willing to do what God wants.
the Example:
A perfect example in the old testament would be Noah who built the Ark. if you look at 1st peter 3:20.
20 who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.
if you have read genesis you would understand in the days of Noah, the men that walk during Noah’s time were evil and corrupt. God was very upset with the hearts of man. turn in your Bibles to Gen 7:5.
5 And Noah did according to all that the Lord commanded him.
we see that Noah did everything God ask of him to do. Noah did not stray from God’s instructions on building the Ark which was to save him and his family. if turn in your Bibles to Gen 6:22.
22 Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.
we see that Noah did everything according to God. Noah did not argue or try to come up with something else. he follow God own instructions completely through exactly how God wanted it done. what we also see in the story of Noah was this, we can assume that Noah tried to tell the others what was going to happen. they probably laugh at him and mad fun of him because he was building the Ark for God. what we can see from Noah is that he had faith in God, trusting God Noah understood that God’s instructions were very important, and that they needed to be follow exactly how God explain them. turn in your Bibles to Heb 11:7
7 By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
sometimes its never encouraging when it we listen to God. God knows what is best for us his children. even the apostles understood that it was better to listen to the guidance of God then of man. Acts 5:29.
29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men.
Like Noah and the Apostles we need to ignore the taunts and saying that as long as we believe its going to be okay. Noah was warn what was going to happen, are we not warn what is going to happen when Christ comes back? God has the right to direct us even when we do not want to listen. God is God after all, He created us. go ahead an turn in your Bibles to 2nd Peter 3:9.
9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
we should remember this verse from early lessons, about how God does not wish to anyone to perish, but come to repentance. we as christian’s understand that when God says something, its going to happen. rather we agree with it or not God promise come to those who obey. we can also look at Jer 10:23 again.
23 O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself;
It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.
We as christian’s need to understand it is not man who is going to save us, its going to be our God.go ahead turn in your Bibles to Prov 14:12.
12 There is a way that seems right to a man,
But its end is the way of death.
if man was left in charge of his own salvation man would fall off a cliff unfortunately. in order for man to follow God he must realize that we can not pick chose, negotiate, we can choose the easy way of things, take from or add to the scripture because we do not like, or think it would be better said if change this. rather than obey God we will not enter the kingdom of God. man thinks sometime the times change and the Bible needs to get with the time. why Change something that does not need to be Change. if man is trying to make worship service enjoy he is doing it out of his own enjoyment. go ahead and turn in your Bible to 2nd Peter 3:16.
16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.
People are always going to try to do things that make them happy. even if it means changing God’s word to fit their own meaning into it. God has never given anything that is to hard to understand, never has God given anything to hard for us. God has always given us away out. go ahead turn in your Bibles to 1st John 5:3.
3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.
we as Christian’s understand the God commandments are not burdensome but are there for guidance, they are there to bring us closer to God even during great struggles in this life. one of the most dangerous saying mankind can is “I think or I feel statements” these two statements that man uses cause more harm than good in the church. Let go ahead an look at Deut 13:4.
4 You shall walk after the Lord your God and fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His voice; you shall serve Him and hold fast to Him.
Then we'll lets also look at Deut 27:10.
10 Therefore you shall obey the voice of the Lord your God, and observe His commandments and His statutes which I command you today.”
with these two verse here we as Christian’s can understand the when come to Obedience towards God it is not how we interpret the Bible, it is not how feel about it, it is not i think this means this or making it say what we want it to say. if man changes the Bible it is not longer God’s word it is man own desire. John 17:17
17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
if the prophets and all the apostle understood that God word and follow it exactly how it was ment to be then we to should understand that Obedience to God is follow how he wants thing to be done in this life.
