So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood.” (Hebrews 13:11–12 ESV) MARK 15:33-39 MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME? The seven sayings of Jesus from the cross (in order): 1. 1. Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. (Luke 23:34) 2. 2. Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise. (Luke 23:43) 3. 3. Woman, behold your son. Son, behold your mother. (John 19:26–27) 4. 4. My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? (Matthew 27:46 & Mark 15:34) 5. 5. I thirst. (John 19:28) 6. 6. (Luke 23:46) MARK 15:33-39 MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME? 1. “My God, My God …” ‣ a change in relationship (separation) 2. “Why ….?” [For what reason…?] ‣ a change in status (condemnation) 3. “… forsaken me.” ‣ a change in experience (isolation) “For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.” (Hebrews 9:13–14 ESV) MARK 15:33-39 MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME? “He saved others; himself he cannot save.” (Mark 15:31) MARK 15:33-39 MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME? “Truly, this man was the Son of God.” (Mark 15:39)
