Shall We Sin More That Grace May Abound More? Pastor Matt Davis – 10/18/2020 – cobonline.org If you have your Bibles with you, turn with me to Romans chapter 6 – And I have a little bit of stuff to read to you before we begin that I was thinking, you know, maybe we need to have a discussion on this, maybe somebody needs to hear this, and I know people need to see it. I don’t know who needs to hear it or see it, but we’re going to go over it. I just have to get to what I needed to read now. All right, I’m probably not going to get it, so I’m just going to tell you about what it was. So somebody posted on my Facebook page the quote that said, “We should not celebrate Halloween because it is a day celebrating and demons and devils. Now, I’m not going to tell you guys to celebrate Halloween or not celebrate it my wife likes to celebrate Halloween, I do not. Somebody posted under the following statement, but it’s okay to have pride referring to gay pride or it’s okay to celebrate lust on Tuesday night. Now this person was actually trying to say the opposite. She’s that you’re saying we can’t do Halloween, but it’s okay to do this and do that? I agree with the sentiment but what I don’t agree with is the person who said the following, she, I’m going to leave names out, but she says show me the scripture that says that it’s not okay to be gay. She says and it gets better, It’s in the KJV only and I know plenty of people that can be homosexual and worship God. Well me being me, she asked and she shall receive. Any Bible version teaches homosexuality is a sin and because you asked for scripture, you’ll get it. • Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind. It is an Abomination from the Leviticus 18:22. • If a man also lie with mankind as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an Abomination they shall surely be put to death and their blood be upon them also, from Leviticus 20:13 • And then Romans 1:26 and 27 Paul writes for this cause God gave them up unto vile affections for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature and likewise also the men leaving the natural use of the woman burned in their lust one toward another men with men working that which is unseemly and receiving in themselves the recompense of their error, which was met. • Paul again writes that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God, be not deceived neither fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers and ferment at permanent being in the biblical usage here men engagement men or women of women. Nor abusers of themselves with mankind nor thieves nor Covetous nor drunkards nor revilers nor extortioners shall inherit the kingdom of God. This is from 1 Corinthians 6:19 • And finally Paul again writes, for whore mongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be anything that is contrary to sound Doctrine From 1 Timothy 1:10 Now I figured this is probably going to be the end of it. All she asked for was to see where the Bible says it and this is where I’m going to stop because this is what is relevant to today’s message. She says “I’m a fornicator and I will surely inherit the kingdom of God.” She then says “we must remember there was one way and only one way to heaven and that is being saved and Sanctified.” I agree, “and there is one and only way of not entering the kingdom that is denying Jesus Christ”, for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, and for there is no just man upon Earth that doeth good and sinneth not. “Every sin is the same in the eyes of God and just because I have a daughter out of wedlock and live unmarried with her daddy does not keep me from being godly because I am saved and that’s okay. So I’m going to now transition to my text for today, Romans chapter 6 verse 1 Paul says, “what shall we say then? shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?” Paul has spent the last five chapters in The Book of Romans Discussing sin, the need for the gospel. Discussing the law and the curse of the law and in Romans 3. He said, he tells us that now we see righteousness outside of the law and that is righteousness through faith. And so after all of that, Paul knows they’re going to be some people who would like to accuse Christians of saying, and I’ve actually I’ve heard this from other people because I teach eternal security, they say “so you’re saying that we can just sin, we can murder, rape, and we’re still saved?” Well, yeah, that’s true. We’re still saved. We are still fallen people, we were fallen when we were saved. But the saved Christian has a new heart and doesn’t want to do those things. But Paul poses the question differently. He says shall we sin more that Grace will abound more? And what Paul is saying here is not the we goofed up as faulty humans, but some people were accusing him of saying because we have Grace, We should just go out and sin more so that Grace is more abundant. Now I have a feeling this person that I’m reading to you, who I had this discussion on Facebook. She’s in that same mindset. She’s in that mindset. Well, I’m saved in Jesus. So it doesn’t matter if I want to have children out of wedlock. It doesn’t matter if I want to have these relationships with people I’m not married to Because all sin is equal. But that’s not what the Bible tells us. Yeah, all sin is equal, but the Bible tells us to sin not. Paul says in verse 2. “God forbid! How shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein?” Paul doesn’t want us to live in sin, God doesn’t want us to live in sin. Rather, Paul says, you know, God forbid it. We’re saved. We’ve been given a new heart, we’re a new creation in Christ. God forbid that we were given a new heart and then we go out and say well, thank you God for saving me. I’m now going to go fornicate because there’s no consequence for it anymore, and, I just, I know that you’re going to save me. That’s not the heart of somebody whose saved. Are they, Saved? I don’t know. You can’t tell and to it to an extent maybe newly save people who have been Heathen their entire life never knowing God, Maybe there’s that adjustment period where they got to work out of that. I don’t know. But The heart of a saved Christian can never say, “My sin put you on that cross and you died to save me. I think I’m going to thank you by choosing to live in sin.” That’s not the heart of a believer. The believer can’t do that. There are too many people, especially so-called Christians. Who they live careless lives. When I say careless, I don’t mean in the way the Bible means to be careless, because Paul tells us in Philippians to be to not have a care. I don’t mean that – I mean that would they live careless as in recklessly as in sinfully doing whatever they pleased, when they justify it with this because I’m saved. So Paul says, he continues in verse 3, “know not that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?” Each one of us that have been baptized have publicly identified with the death and burial and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Okay, but what that means is we buried our sin, we buried our old self. That is Christ meant, That’s what he meant. When he said if anyone would come after me let him deny himself daily and follow me – Is we die to ourselves. We die to our lust. we die to our desires, we die to our sin. For therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death, that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the father, even so we should walk in newness of life. We symbolically resurrected when we come out of the water. We will have a physical Resurrection later on but this is symbolic, so that we can walk in newness of life. Because we’re new, we’re no longer under the curse, we are no longer subject to The Temptations in the way we were before we were saved. Yeah, we can be tempted. But we’re new because we have the spirit of God in us and because we have a spirit of God in us, we need to walk like we have the spirit of God in us. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, which will also be in the likeness of his resurrection. And in his resurrection Jesus Christ was glorified. He was perfect now. He was also perfect before that as well. But Paul is telling us how we ought to act. Because of Who We Are, And because what we’ve identified with. Let me, I’m going to say something differently. I think Paul may have had the same idea, but he didn’t write it this way. When we are baptized, we publicly identify with Christ. So what we’re doing when we get baptized, we tell the world, we tell all the non-believers – They know what baptism is, they don’t understand it, but they know what baptism is. So when we get baptized we tell the world I follow this guy. I’ve identified with him. I’m one of his. So what Paul said is, can we truly sits be saved and say, “It’s ok to sin?” Because if we tell the world we identify with him and then we go and we live that life of fornication and adultery, and lust and and all these sins but we’re doing is we’re telling the world that our God is okay with that. We Tell The World Our God condones that, or God isn’t offended by that because we show the world that were his by our baptism and then we go and live that way. And so all we do is we We portray a negative image of Our Lord. Verse 6, knowing this that our old man is crucified with him that the body of sin might be destroyed that henceforth. We should not serve sin. You know henceforth from this point forward. I’m not a servant of sin. I don’t serve it. I don’t serve my desires. I don’t serve my lust. But I serve the king. I serve God and I walk after that way because Our old man is crucified. It doesn’t say that our old man has past, it doesn’t say that. It says it’s crucified. What used to be me, is no longer. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Well, the unbelievers going to read this and go well, duh. That’s obvious. If you are dead, you’re free from everything and free from life, right? That’s not what Christ is saying. Christ said “he that seeks his life will find Death” Christ also says “but he that will lose his life for my sake, he will inherit Life” So when Paul writes here that he who is dead, Paul is saying he who was dead to the world, he who was dead to himself, that has lost his life. Those are freed from sin. I mean, how could we not be freed from sin? We have the spirit of God in us. God indwells me, he indwells you. We’re free from everything. While our physical bodies may still experience things of this world. We are not creatures of this world. We’re just trapped here for a time being. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with them. Everyone who went under that water were, or more inclusive, everybody who has been saved because there are people who do not get baptized. I can think of the man up on the cross. He never got baptized, but he he’s with Christ. We are dead with Christ. Again, Paul tells us that the old passes away. And we have to, when we get saved, some of the hardest thing for any believer to do is to let the old man go away. The old man has died here. And that’s a fact that’s true. But often times, we live in the past and we hold on to the old man were carrying a dead body with us, a dead way of life, and we don’t want to let it go but it’s dead. We need to let it go. We need, as Christians, we need to get out of the habit, of living as we used to live and live as Christ would want us to live because that’s what we are called to. Now this is hard because every Christian is still mortal. And as Mortals, as Fallen beings we still sin. And each of us were going to have sins in our life. There’s sin in my life, sin I had before salvation, that I have not kicked in the butt yet and I carry that sin with me and I repeat it and I ask for forgiveness and repent and then I repeat it and I repeat it and repeat it and every Christian is going to experience the same thing. However, the attitude, the horror of it. This is what determines if we have a heart of a Believer or if we have a heart of a heathen. Do we feel bad about that sin that we commit everyday? That we keep asking for forgiveness and what I call habitual sin because we just keep bringing it up. I know personally when I commit those sins it breaks my heart and I’m remorseful. It’s like, “God”, and I’ve prayed this prayer, “God. I don’t want this anymore. You know, I’m new in you this is the old me. I want it out get rid of it.” Do we have this heart after God, where, I don’t want this because it’s offensive to Him? Or do we simply say, Well, I’m just a sinner. So it is what it is? That’s not the heart of a believer. I have some other scriptures real quick in John chapter 8. John chapter 8 we read about The adulterous woman And I was like, I kept flipping Pages because I was looking for Christ’s words and read this Bible doesn’t have it. I’m going to just start in verse 1. Jesus went unto the Mount of Olives and early in the morning. He came again into the temple and all the people came unto him and he sat down and taught them. The scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery and when they had set her in the mess before I can kind of I just have a question. Why did they only bring the woman? It says she was caught in adultery. That means they caught her in the ACT. Where is the man who is also guilty? I just that I wanted to bring that up. The reason, I can tell you why they didn’t bring the man. It’s they weren’t looking for justice. They were looking to put him in a tough spot where no matter what answer he gave they could condemn him. And that’s what this whole thing is. Verse 4, “They said unto him Master, This woman was taken in adultery in the very Act. Now Moses in the law commanded us that such should be stoned but what saith thou? and they said this tempting him that they might might have to accuse him but Jesus stooped down and with his finger wrote on the ground as though he heard them not.” And I can’t help but wonder what He’s writing here. “So they continued asking him and verse 7 and he lifted himself up and said unto them. “He that is without sin among you let him first cast a stone at her.” Because I’m here and I hate just leaving stuff open even though I could just come back and make a whole another sermon out of it. I’ve got to say something – how many of you have told somebody what you’re doing is wrong and they go let him who is without sin cast the first stone happens to me all the time. I hear it all the time. You know, this is not the same thing – they are condemning her to death. We are just saying, “Hey, I just want to let you know what you are doing is offensive and sinful before God.” We’re not condemning, we’re not judging. But we are doing what the Bible tells us to do, to warn of sin. And again, he stooped down and wrote on the ground and they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience went out one by one beginning at the oldest even into the last. and Jesus was left alone and the woman standing in the midst, when Jesus had lifted himself up saw none but the woman. He said unto her, woman, where are those thine accusers? Hath No man condemned thee. She said no man, Lord, and Jesus said unto her neither do I condemn thee? Now go and sin no more. This is where the verse I want to focus on. Jesus says I don’t condemn thee. And Jesus says that each of us and he says I will not forsake you. He says if you confess me before men, I will confess you before the father. You know, he says if you believe in me, I’ll save you and give you eternal life. I don’t condemn you but he also says, Go and sin no more. It’s the same God who says I hold nothing against to also tells us to sin no more. I’m not preaching this because I know of any of you here today that are guilty of justifying sin because you’re saved but it’s something that I feel like we need to be conscious of . That’s something we need to, We need to evaluate ourselves on a daily basis and we need to ask “Am Iportraying Christ as my Lord and Savior? Am I portraying him as a holy person or am I just justify in my acts and my Deeds because I can?” Now because we’re Fallen and we can fall into this same trap a lot of people do, if we don’t evaluate ourselves if we’re not honest with ourselves and God about this. We can blow off our Witness. Now how hard will it be for us to convert people, to show people the Light of Christ, when we can’t portray Christ is the way we say that he is? Now we say Christ is one thing but we show him as another. We are supposed to be reflectors of Him. In fact Christ continues in verse 12 then spake Jesus unto them saying I am the light of the world and he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life. I just I can’t help but think this person on Facebook, She’s not watching this. She’s not friends with me. She’ll never see this video. I met her in a private group that I never post in. I just follow it for I don’t know why but I do but I can’t help but think she doesn’t know the Lord. She doesn’t know Jesus but she says she knows the Bible. Well, she knows parts of the Bible, but she at least has a knowledge of it because she knows Jesus is the only way. But she’s totally ignored the fact that this is what Christ says. He says, I am the light of the world. He says if you follow me, you will not walk in darkness but will walk in light. But here’s the thing. We’re going to sin. I’m not justifying that we’re going to sin at no point does any sin I commit remove the blood of Christ from me because Christ has said that I shall never, I can never be put from his hand. But there are people who were never saved and claimed it to be saved. And those people, you know, like people like this who want to say. Well, it’s okay because Christ saves. All I have to do is say his name in front of a bunch of people. He covers me and I’m free to do what I want. Okay, that’s not a person who ever had a changed heart. So and by the way, what you’re referring to is not in Hebrews, it’s in first John I believe chapter 5 I’m going to turn there. First John 5. It’s at the very end. There’s another place that talks about it as well. I’m going to, I’m gonna start in verse 16 and we’ll go to the end if any man see his brother sin a sin, which is not unto death. He shall ask and he shall give him life without sin. Not unto death. There is a sin unto death. I do not say that he shall pray for it. All unrighteousness is sin and there is a sin not unto death. There is only one sin that sin unto death by the way, and that is denying Christ. If you deny Christ none of your other you’re going to hell that’s just that’s what Christ says. If you profess Christ and you were a Believer then it says there’s a sin not unto death that’s because all of our other sins are covered. We know that whoever is born of God sinneth not. But he that is begotten by God Keep keepeth himself and that Wicked one toucheth him not only know that we are a God and the whole world lieth in wickedness, and we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding that we may know him that is true and are in in in him that is true even as son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and life eternal little children. Keep yourself from Idols. Amen. Verse 8 in first John one If we say that we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us now. What is the truth? Christ. The truth is not in us if we deny our sins. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned we make him a liar and his word is not in US. And John continues throughout these three letters to say that if we continue in sin that we weren’t saved. And now what John means is “If I struggled with this my first got read it. If our heart continues in sin, okay, if in our heart we want we love our sin. We love the world. We love what we’re doing if our heart has never changed. We were never saved. And that is what we have to examine in ourselves. Paul writes in Romans 3:31. He says do we make void the law through faith? Ye, rather we establish it. This is what I’ll close with today is we establish the law. We are not under the law. We are under grace. We are born and redeemed and Christ Jesus. The law shall have no dominion over us at shall not touch us. It’s curse should not be upon us. But even though we are not under the law Paul says we don’t make the law void we establish it because of who we are because we love Jesus because he is in us. We establish the law that we are free and we live So let no man say That it is Okay and Justified to willingly continue in sin because Christ is in US. Let’s pray and then we’ll stand for worship. Father, God lord, Jesus. Lord, We thank you and praise you and Lord. I love your word. Especially because all these things that that people could say were want to say were often do say Lord. You have given us an answer to that. You’ve given us you’ve given us an instruction book for life. And when We follow your instruction book. We can’t go astray and we can’t lose life. So we thank you Lord. I Thank you for being inside. Each of us. I thank you for your death and Lord. I think you are that you tell us we are set free from sin and death and that we don’t walk in darkness anymore, but we walk and your light. The light of truthfulness. Oh Lord, Let us examine ourselves and let you examine us. Lord reveal to Us hidden sin, hidden sin that we may be justifying, that we found excuses for. Hidden sin that we don’t know about. Lord, till the soil of our heart. It’s painful we know but till it that we have a heart that seeks after you and Lord. Let us be reflectors of your light and let us portray you to the world as you would have portrayed yourself. We pray for these things in Jesus name. Amen.
