2 Main Characters

John has a drama unfolding
He goes back and forth between the 2
Jesus has been arrested for being God
after all of the trials the charge was- being the Messiah
being betrayed by one of His own
the second character in out drama is Peter
The leader of the band of disciples
the spokesperson, the one who said to Jesus
“you are the Christ the son of the living God”
the brave man who said also to Jesus
“I will defend you to the death”
John 18:10 LEB
Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. (Now the name of the slave was Malchus.)
our drama today our 2 main characters will be questioned
one will pass the test the other will fail
and what will this tell us about ourselves
and about our Lord
Read John 18 12-27
Pray

Act 1 Jesus being arrested

We saw last week Judas brought a large military command and temple police and servants to arrest Jesus
the arresting people bowing down to the majesty of God
Peter pulling his sword and cutting off Malchus ear
we pick up the scene here in V12
John 18:12–14 LEB
Then the cohort and the military tribune and the officers of the Jews seized Jesus and tied him up, and brought him to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. (Now it was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it was better that one man die for the people.)
they tied God up so He cant get away
Jesus brought before Annas
in the eyes of the people Annas was the High Priest
a High Priest is for life, but the Romans assigned the position
V 14 Caiaphas is the High Priest and he prophesied something
back chapter 11
John 11:49–50 LEB
But a certain one of them, Caiaphas (who was high priest in that year), said to them, “You do not know anything at all! Nor do you consider that it is profitable for you that one man should die for the people, and the whole nation not perish.”
the high priest knew that the only way to keep their lifestyle was to murder Jesus
profitable to who?
what he was saying was correct - but his intentions were selfish
it was profitable for Jesus to die
John 11:51–52 LEB
(Now he did not say this from himself, but being high priest in that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, and not for the nation only, but also that the children of God who are scattered would be gathered into one.)
the Fathers plan for Jesus was to come to earth as a man to die for the sins of His people, to all who would believe
to be the substitutionary atonement
The Lamb of God to take away the sin of the world
John 11:53 LEB
So from that day they resolved that they should kill him.
the trial of Jesus was conducted in secret- and was found guilty
He needed to die

Act 2 Peters First Denial

John 18:15 LEB
So Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. (Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.)
2 disciples followed Peter and another
Peter the leader of the bunch
Peter the brash protector
Peter swore he would protect Jesus
He is following at a distance- he did not enter withe the rest of the people
the other entered because he was a family friend
and he entered with Jesus- but Peter was not close enough
John 18:16 LEB
But Peter was standing by the door outside. So the other disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the doorkeeper and brought Peter in.
the other went to bring Peter in
but there was an entry question
John 18:17 LEB
Then the female slave who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, “You are not also one of the disciples of this man, are you?” He said, “I am not!”
a question demanding a negative answer
you are not?
Jesus just a few hours earlier told Peter he would deny
Why was Peter even there? was he going to rescue Jesus?
did he come to die with Him? did he come to stand by his Lord in his time of need?
Peters reply I am not
When Jesus said that He was the I Am every body fell and worshipped
when Peter aid I am he was lying denying his Lord
John 18:18 LEB
(Now the slaves and the officers were standing there, having made a charcoal fire because it was cold, and they were warming themselves. And Peter was also standing there with them and warming himself.)
Peter was only thinking about himself
trying to be incognito
a secret follower of Jesus

Act 3 Jesus 1st trial

there were 6 trials of Jesus 3 by the Jews and 3 by the Romans
and in the end the only thing they could get Him for was claiming to be God
John 18:19 LEB
So the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.
Annas questioned Him
he wanted Jesus to incriminate himself which is unlawful
John 18:20–21 LEB
Jesus replied to him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple courts where all the Jews assemble, and I have said nothing in secret. Why are you asking me? Ask those who heard what I have said to them! Behold, these people know what I said.”
the proper way of a trial is to bring witnesses
the witness is the prosecutor
then another witness is to corroborate the account
Jesus is telling the High priest what he is doing is wrong
John 18:22 LEB
Now when he had said these things, one of the officers who was standing by gave a slap in the face to Jesus, saying, “Do you reply to the high priest in this way?”
Jesus was cuffed up side the head for speaking the truth
Jesus replied to this also because it too was illegal
John 18:23 LEB
Jesus replied to him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify about what is wrong! But if I have spoken correctly, why do you strike me?”
at this time Annas was fed up with proceedings
turned Jesus over to Caiaphas
thus ending the first trial

Act 4 Peters Denials

Peter warming himself but spiritually cold on the inside
Jesus is being abused physically
Peter getting comfortable
John 18:25 LEB
Now Simon Peter was standing there and warming himself. So they said to him, “You are not also one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not!”
Its getting easier to lie
some people you know they are lying because they are talking
Satan is the father of lies when we lie we are doing the will of satan
John 18:26 LEB
One of the slaves of the high priest, who was related to the one whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?”
the further we get down that road the easier it gets
Matthew 26:72 LEB
And again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man!”
John 18:27 LEB
So Peter denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed.
he went out an wept with remorse
the rooster crowing brought about repentance
knowing he was wrong

Grand Finale

Caiaphas was right
Jesus came to die for the people
John 11:50 LEB
Nor do you consider that it is profitable for you that one man should die for the people, and the whole nation not perish.”
as we look at the drama of Peter denying His Lord
the bad deeds of Annas and the officer
this is who Jesus came to die for
these are the sins He came to take the punishment for
For Peter to be brought permanently into the family
Judas we will see later tries to make amends in his own way,
and undo what he done and ends up hanging himself
Peter on the other hand came back to Jesus and believed
Jesus died for the sin for all who will put their trust in Him
John 3:16 LEB
For in this way God loved the world, so that he gave his one and only Son, in order that everyone who believes in him will not perish, but will have eternal life.
