Isaiah 61:1–2 ESV
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;
Luke 4:16–22 ESV
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?”

Jesus Makes the Claim...

The Spirit of the “Lord God” is Upon Me
- After the temptation where the Second Adam has PASSED the TEST He returns with the “Spirit of the LORD upon Him...
Because the LORD has anointed Me
- Now we see that the coronation of the MESSIAH (to annoint is chrio in greek. masha in Hebrew) in this first advent does not happen by the will of the people (Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself. John 6:15) INSTEAD He is annointed (called Messiah) by GOD’S WILL
To preach good tidings to the poor
- the DECLARATION of GOOD NEWS - “your sins are forgiven...” Matthew 9:6 “But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.”
He has sent me to proclaim LIBERTY to the captives
- Now, finally, the Messiah has come to set sinful man FREE from his bondage to his own sin and shame - John 8:36 34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
and Recovering of Sight to the Blind / Opening of the prison to them that are bound
- Luke quotes the Septuagint which appears to paraphrase the Hebrew and this can be translated as we read in the modern translations- Jesus told the Pharisees that they were the Blind leading the Blind and both end up in a ditch - in other words their failure see their condition made it impossible to instruct the people of their own.. Instead of Humility, Repentance and dependance by faith upon the Mercy and Grace of God they taught false doctrine, made the written Word of God to no affect, and self-righteousness… Jesus came to OPEN THE EYES of the spiritually Blind....
The second “prison” is a quote from Isaiah 58:6 and 41:7 and may well have been a transcription or note in the text which was read…
There is also the idea of the “DEBTORS PRISON” We owe a debt we cannot pay… Jesus paid that debt on our behalf...
To Proclaim the Acceptable year of the LORD
- The general day where God’s Anger and Wrath upon Israel is turned to a day of Restoration… Is this not what happens in the life of one who turns TO CHRIST? It becomes the “acceptable year of the LORD” to them...

Following the Example of Jesus

The RESULT...

Luke 4:20–30 ESV
20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” 23 And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘ “Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’ ” 24 And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” 28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30 But passing through their midst, he went away.
2nd Time:
Mark 6:1–6 ESV
1 He went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. 2 And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? 3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. 4 And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.” 5 And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching.
Isaiah 61:2–7 ESV
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified. They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. Strangers shall stand and tend your flocks; foreigners shall be your plowmen and vinedressers; but you shall be called the priests of the Lord; they shall speak of you as the ministers of our God; you shall eat the wealth of the nations, and in their glory you shall boast. Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion; instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot; therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion; they shall have everlasting joy.
