Title                            The wise?

More than we ask

Genesis 41:8                  The Ignorant wise

8 In the morning his mind was troubled, so he sent for all the magicians and wise men of Egypt. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no-one could interpret them for him.

Daniel 2:11-12

11 What the king asks is too difficult. No-one can reveal it to the king except the gods, and they do not live among men.”

12 This made the king so angry and furious that he ordered the execution of all the wise men of Babylon.

2 Chronicles 1:10-12      Wisdom the gift of God

10 Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

11 God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s desire and you have not asked for wealth, riches or honour, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, 12 therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, riches and honour, such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have.”

Proverbs 2:6

6 For the Lord gives wisdom,

and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Psalm 107:43                 Wisdom in seeking God

43 Whoever is wise, let him heed these things

and consider the great love of the Lord.

Psalm 111:10

10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;

all who follow his precepts have good understanding.

To him belongs eternal praise.

Proverbs 3:7

7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;

fear the Lord and shun evil.

Matthew 2:1                  The Visit of the Magi

2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem

Proverbs 2:12                The value of this wisdom

12 Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men,

from men whose words are perverse,

Deuteronomy 4:5-8        Wisdom from the Word

5 See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the Lord my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. 6 Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.” 7 What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him? 8 And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today?

Proverbs 9:9

9 Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still;

teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning.

Colossians 2:3               Wisdom in Christ

3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Psalm 37:30                  Wisdom and righteousness

30 The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom,

and his tongue speaks what is just.

James 3:13-18               True wisdom

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbour bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.

Deuteronomy 1:9-13       Wisdom in Leadership

9 At that time I said to you, “You are too heavy a burden for me to carry alone. 10 The Lord your God has increased your numbers so that today you are as many as the stars in the sky. 11 May the Lord, the God of your fathers, increase you a thousand times and bless you as he has promised! 12 But how can I bear your problems and your burdens and your disputes all by myself? 13 Choose some wise, understanding and respected men from each of your tribes, and I will set them over you.”

Luke 21:15                    Promised wisdom

15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.

Romans 11:33-36           Praise for his wisdom

33 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!

How unsearchable his judgments,

and his paths beyond tracing out!

34 “Who has known the mind of the Lord?

Or who has been his counsellor?”

35 “Who has ever given to God,

that God should repay him?”

36 For from him and through him and to him are all things.

To him be the glory for ever! Amen.

Revelation 5:12

12 In a loud voice they sang:

“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,

to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength

and honour and glory and praise!”
