As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”
but you shall be called the priests of the Lord;
they shall speak of you as the ministers of our God;
you shall eat the wealth of the nations,
and in their glory you shall boast.
this is true enough: they were in process of building up
were treated individually, as so many babes, to grow up into an ideal freedom of soul: here they are treated collectively (of course, along with the Gentile Christians), as so many stones, incomplete and unmeaning in themselves, by arrangement and cemented union to rise into an ideal house of God.
The temple is, however, regarded not in its capacity of a place for worship so much as a place for Divine inhabitation.

they are being taught to recognise that they themselves, in their union with one another, and with Jesus Christ, are the true abode of the Most High.
Jesus’ himself said in words doubtless present to St. Peter's mind, "Upon this rock I will build my Church."
a living stone cannot build something great for God as it sits all on its own. What God does in us together is important. He is building something out of us together.
Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men
Chosen by God and precious
being built up a spiritual house
a holy priesthood
to offer up spiritual sacrifices
