Many people outside the church really know very little about the Bible...
However, there are some Scriptures that people outside the church can readily quote, though they often don’t really know what those Scriptures actually mean...
In fact, if you’ve gone through my Studying the Bible class, you know I often say, “It’s not just what the Bible says, it what the Bible means.”
John 3:16
“Judge not lest ye be judged...”
“He who is without sin, cast the first stone...”
Like the other two, most who quote this verse have very little understand of what it means...
Exegesis of John 8:1-11
Exegesis of John 8:1-11
Why the brackets?
Verses 53-6
Religious leaders bring a woman caught in the act of adultery to Jesus to test Him...
Will He contradict the Law of Moses, or will He contradict His own teaching?
Caught in the act of adultery...
Doesn’t it take two? Where is the man?
How did they catch her in “the very act of adultery”?
Was this a set-up? (of course it was!)
Jesus simply writes something in the sand...
Verses 7-8
They press Him, and eventually He responds...
The person without sin should be the first to throw a stone...
Verse 9
Imagine the experience of the woman…thump, thump, thump...
Why oldest to youngest?
Verses 10-11
Where are those who condemned you?
I don’t condemn you…but now go and leave this life of sin...
She experiences mercy, yet she’s also be invited to allow this mercy to change the trajectory of her life...
