Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely thou hadst sent me away now empty. God hath seen mine affliction and the labour of my hands, and rebuked thee yesternight.
While I was preparing this l was wondering how many of you really love what you do for a job. I asked that question to several of my friends awhile back and I don’t think any of them loved it. I think most enjoyed it sometimes. But certainly not always.
Mark twain said this:
Find a job you enjoy doing and you’ll never work a day in your life.
That sounds really good. It’s just not true. If you have a job, even those you signed up for to make a difference. If you are putting legitimate effort into it, then it’s going to be work. And there are going to be some hard days.
And some of you are experiencing it. And probably all of you have experienced at some point a job where every day was work, maybe an employer who did not have your best interest at heart.
And that is very often the case because no matter what is communicated in the weekly/monthly motivational meeting. The bottom line is the bottom line.
Jacob’s employer was certainly this way. Time after time we see that Laban had manipulated things for his own benefit with absolutely no concern for Jacob. Laban, probably wasn’t intentionally malicious, but as we see here was perfectly fine with Jacob’s detriment.
But Jacob did have someone who was for him. The God of His Father was for Him. And because of that, he wasn’t on empty. And that was the only reason He wasn’t on empty. So I want you to think of that. Whether or not the one who signs your paychecks is concerned about you, has no thought at all for you, or is it even malicious to you. The reason you are not empty, the reason you are sustained and provided for is because of the same God. The God of Abraham.
With every paycheck we receive, we do well to remember who it is that keeps us above empty. And it’s not our employer any more than it is ourselves. And really, because of who our God is, it is impossible for anyone, or anything else to bring us to that point.
And if you are in a position of affliction that same God sees you. And He sees the labor of your hands. And He will make it right.
