As a part of David’s praise to God for answering his prayer, he wrote in v 26
Psalm 22:26 ESV
26 The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord! May your hearts live forever!
Our Lord similarly said,
John 6:51 ESV
51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
Jesus established The Lord’s Supper for his church to practice regularly until he returns. The Lord’s Supper reminds us of our Savior’s death on the cross in our place. When we eat the bread and drink the cup, we remember Jesus’ sacrifice, and are satisfied with him because of the love of God that was poured and put on display through the gospel.
So, if you have put your faith in Jesus for your salvation, are invited to his table. But if do not believe in him, this meal is not for you. The Lord’s Supper is for believers only. The Scriptures warn,
“Whoever … eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, then”4
So, if the Lord Jesus Christ is not your God, please set aside the elements, and come talk with one of the elders. We’d be delighted to speak with you about what it means to embrace Jesus your treasure and satisfaction.
Parents, you know your children. You have the responsibility of discerning whether your children are in the faith and may partake of the Lord’s Supper in a worthy manner.
Distribution of elements & Time for self-examination
Let’s take a moment now to (1) bow our heads, (2) reflect on the cross, and (3) examine ourselves as the Scriptures instruct. Prayer for blessing The bread
“… Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’”5
The cup
“In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me…”
Brothers and sisters, “…as often as [we] eat [the] bread and drink the cup, [we] proclaim [our] Lord’s death until he comes.’”6
