Today I get to preach on One of my favorite topics. Jesus.
Continuing our gospel story we are going to be in the book of Isaiah 52
Isaiah is considered to be one of the major prophets. His book has 66 chapters in it, the same number as books of the Bible.
Isaiah is the opposite of Amos, he is a prophet from Israel to the nation of Judah.
To summarize this books, he told the nation of Judah of how God would send them into exile in Babylon but would one day restore them through the work of His servant So that His kingdom would be unending.
Our passage of scripture that we are looking at today is one that speaks of that servant who would come to wipe away the sins of Judah, Israel, and the world.
I spoke last week about asking yourself, who is God to you. We know that serve 1 God manifest in a trinity through God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
When we ask that question about who God is to us it is important for us to not only establish who our Heavenly Father is, but also who God the Son is and God the Holy Spirit.
Today we will examine a side of Christ, because just like us I believe we could say there are multiple aspects to who we are.
This side of Christ is the suffering servant and the victorious king.
Let’s read the passage and look at who our Savior is so that we may worship Him more.
Isaiah 52:13–15 KJV 1900
Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, He shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high. As many were astonied at thee; His visage was so marred more than any man, And his form more than the sons of men: So shall he sprinkle many nations; The kings shall shut their mouths at him: For that which had not been told them shall they see; And that which they had not heard shall they consider.

I. He is your guaranteed victor

The first line we read in this passage is that God’s servant will be successful. Jesus’ victory over death and the grave was never in question. Him being God in the flesh guaranteed His victory
Some religions try to teach that Jesus never claimed to be God. Jehovah’s Witness teach that their are three gods that Christians worship. Mormon’s teach that Jesus is the brother of Satan. both of which are wrong.
Jesus said
John 10:30 KJV 1900
I and my Father are one.
John 10:30 KJV 1900
I and my Father are one.
Knowing who Jesus is, is important to protect us from false doctrines and teachings that are out there. The book of Galatian’s was written by Paul for the purpose of keeping the Galatians from falling prey to the false teachings that had entered their midst.
In that book he puts a focus on faith in Jesus as what brings our right standing before God
Galatians 3:23–25 KJV 1900
But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
Galatians 2:21 KJV 1900
I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
Galatians 2:21 KJV 1900
I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
He puts the focus on who Jesus is to refute false doctrine. He puts a focus on faith to combat the teachings of being under the law.
None of which are important if Jesus is not who He says He is as the Son of God.
Being the Son of God and our garunteed victor did not mean His victory came easily In a human sense of it all.
He is also our

II. He is your Suffering Servant

Notice verse 14
Isaiah 52:14 KJV 1900
As many were astonied at thee; His visage was so marred more than any man, And his form more than the sons of men:
Isaiah 52:14 KJV 1900
As many were astonied at thee; His visage was so marred more than any man, And his form more than the sons of men:
Another way of saying this is “Just as many were appalled at you-his appearance was so disfigured that he did not look like a man, and his form did not resemble a human being”
This passage speaks of the scourging process that took place before He had the nails drove through His body.
According to truth magazine
”The victim of scourging was bound to a post or frame, stripped of his clothing, and beaten with the flagellum from the shoulders to the Lois. The beating left the victim bloody and weak, in unimaginable pain, and near the point of death.”
This type of punishment was not allowed to happen to Roman citizens. It was only for slaves and non-romans.
And for all of this he did not make an argument for his wrongful persecution. He endured not only the pain of the cross for us but also this torturous procedure that had been used to leave men dead.
Jesus was garenteed a victory but before the victory He had to endure the scourging and the cross.
He prayed in the garden before his crucifixion
Luke 22:42 KJV 1900
Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
Luke 22:42 KJV 1900
Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
I believe that in His humanity he prayed for another way but in submission ultimately to the will of God He endured what was needed for you and for me.
As the suffering Servant Jesus did what we could not do and live a perfect life only to end it with a condemnation and sentence that we deserve but would lead to nothing more than our death.
By His submission to death, we have life.
He was guaranteed a victory but not without a suffering. He suffered as a willing servant that could have called on 1000 angels to remove the Romans from the scourging, to have taken the nails from his hands and feet and lift him off the cross.
But Instead of that He stayed. He stayed knowing your sin. He stayed knowing my sin. And not just knowing the fact you would sin. He knew the lust you would have in your heart. He knew the abomination of pride that you have. He knew the gossip you would spread. He knew the lies you would tell.
He knew you. When that cat of nine tails went across his back, He thought of you. When that Roman plucked out his beard, He knew me. When that cross was plaved on His back He knew you wouldn’t fully commit to Him. When he fell and had to have someone help him, he felt love for you. When he was laid on that cross and the first nail drove in His hands, He knew the blood that was pouring from his body now would fulfill the law of God that you may know Him.
Who is God? Who is the Jesus of the Gospel by which we are saved? He is a guaranteed victor who suffered as a servant and then was raised as a king of kings and Lord of Lords. He is your savior and He should be your Lord!

III. He should be your Lord

Isaiah 52:15 KJV 1900
So shall he sprinkle many nations; The kings shall shut their mouths at him: For that which had not been told them shall they see; And that which they had not heard shall they consider.
Isaiah 52:15 KJV 1900
So shall he sprinkle many nations; The kings shall shut their mouths at him: For that which had not been told them shall they see; And that which they had not heard shall they consider.
The sprinkle reference of many nations would have been difficult for the Jews of the day to hear. They were very nationalistic and while there were means of people converting to their faith, it was not something that we see mentioned a lot. We know that they were racist towards the Samaritans and I believe looked down upon others as well because they were not God’s chosen people.
Now they are being told that the one who God will die for will sprinkle many nations. This is an allusion to the sprinkling of the blood of the sacrifice on the mercy seat by the High Priest once a year on Yom Kanpur.
Jesus isn’t just the Lord of those who believe in Him. Hear me out on this one.
Philippians 2:10–11 KJV 1900
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Whether you or anyone else decide to trust in Christ, there will be a day wherever one believes and knows who Jesus is.
While that should bring fear to the heart of an unbeliever, for those of us that believe in Jesus, that should be a comfort. A day is coming where we will know Jesus and know Him more. We won’t have questions about who He is, we will know Him intimately.
You can know Him now though. Sure, there may be parts of Him we don’t understand but that again points to our humanity and His deity.
Knowing Him that way is the way Paul wanted the Galatians to know Jesus so that they wouldn’t turn from Him and follow false doctrine.
If I were to put my finger on one of the main problem in Christianity today isn’t a lack of church attendance, it isn’t a lack of giving, it isn’t a lack of grace....it’s a lack of understanding who God is and what God has done for you.
Those other problems not problems at all. It’s like when you have a headache because your dehydrated. You can take Tylenol for the headache but that’s not going to solve your problem. It removes the symptom.
The problem we face is no different than the problem the Israelites faced, we have determined in our own hearts who God is and who Jesus is
The first commandment given to Moses on top of the mountain was this
Exodus 20:2–6 KJV 1900
I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
I am your God, have none other before me. Don’t make any images or likeness of anything and worship it.
There are 2 major forms of idol worship of those that claim to believe in Jesus. The first is a major part of a denomination you are all familiar with.
I will say that in preparation for this message my understanding of what I’m about to show you changed from what I know but I still believe it is wrong and I’ll show you why.
Statue of saints
Statue of Mary
Before this last week in final prep for this message I believe Catholics worshipped these statues. After doing some reading from some diocese of the Catholic Church, that does not appear to be the case, at least in their minds.
According to Catholic doctrine they are not worshipping the statues or even who the statues represent They see themselves asking Mary and the saints to pray to God on their behalf.
That doesn’t sound as bad As worshiping..right?
Wait a minute though…What would you call it when you put someone or something in a position that is only reserved for God?
While the catholic church may believe they are not worshipping the saints, they are placing them in a position reserved for God the Son.
Hebrews 7:25 KJV 1900
Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
Hebrews 7:25 KJV 1900
Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
1 Timothy 2:5 KJV 1900
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
1 Timothy 2:5 KJV 1900
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
Those they are seeking to make intercession for them in Heaven, are people they are seeking to put in the place of Jesus Christ. There is a different between asking a person who has died and is in Heaven to pray for you and asking your friend or your pastor to make intercession for you.
We are going to God through Jesus the same as you are. But trying to get to God through Mary or anyone else is to put them in the place of God the Son Jesus Christ.
Now that’s an obvious act of idolatry. But what about the more subtle one that I’m afraid affects even those here today.
Idol worship is the act of making something or someone other than God your God and your Lord.
The second form of idolatry is the idol in our mind.
I’m afraid too many believers make God who they want Him to be rather than who He is.
It is such a backwards way of thinking. It’s as though God isn’t good enough for us so we have to morph Him into someone he is not.
We want God to change for us instead of us changing for God. We want God to be ok with our sin we want God to look the other way at our unfaithfulness to Him. We want to determine who our God is when in the end and even now there is only one God and He isn’t determined by your thoughts or feelings. He is defined by His Word and your relationship with His Word will have a direct impact on your relationship with Him.
When you know Jesus as the victor over the grave, the suffering servant that died in your place, and the Lord of your life now and for eternity, you wont’ want to create another god in your mind.
But do you know Him? Or have you developed an idea of who He is and you’re unwilling to change it?

Time of Response

When is the last time you thanked God for your salvation? When is the last time you thought about what Jesus went through for you? Is it enough to sacrifice time and sleep? Was it enough to adjust your life to His will?
PRAYER, DON”T SAY AMEN
Christians, its the least we can do to live for the Jesus of the Gospel. I don’t want you to feel guilted to serve, I pray that you will be motivated to serve by what we have heard today.
For those of you that haven’t trusted in Jesus, I pray you’ll see today the amazing sacrifice He made for you.
There is no one else that can make that decision for you. You can’t be saved because of your church, because of your family, it’s a decision you have to make and you can make that today
John 3:16 KJV 1900
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Are you hear this morning and don’t know Jesus as your Savior. If you’d like to make the decision and cause for a party in Heaven and here on earth to take place as there is celebration and rejoicing.
If you’ve never received jesus as your savior. This is not Not weird, it’s private moment.
Jesus came and done all the work, you don’t earn or achieve your salvation, receive by faith, gift
gift of god eternal life through jesus Christ
Romans says you receive that gift in prayer by calling on the name of the Lord, Whosoever shall call upon the name of the lord shall be saved
If you’d like to make that decision
if this is your heart
you can pray in faith and invite Jesus to be your personal savior
“Jesus I admit I need a savior, I’m sinful. I know I need salvation, reconciliation with God. I believe you are God and you came and died in my place and you bore my sin, and you rose again, and right now I accept you as my savior, I’m trusting you alone.”
My friend it’s that simple
If that’s your payer you have recieved the greatest gift you have ver received.
I want to congratulate you if that is your decision.
