Described the events leading to the Israelite being at mount Sinai
Setting the stage for when God will speak.
Reminding the Israelites of what God has done.
Remember that the first portion of the 10 Commandments are how we are to relate to God, the others are how we are to relate to each other.

3rd Commandment

Exodus 20:7 ESV
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
Q: What does this mean?
Do you guys know the origin of your name?
Adam - “Man”
Kevin - “Anglican form of an Irish name meaning “Handsome Birth”
Ryan - Irish Surname meaning “descendants of Rian” which Rian could mean little king.
Marzell - German variant of Marcellus, which is a derived from the name Marcus which derived from the Latin “Mars” same as mine.
Marius - Derived from the latin “Mars” the Roman god of war or “male”
John - Hebrew derived meaning “ Yahweh is gracious”
Caleb - Hebrew meaning “whole, all of” and “heart”
Guillermo - Spanish for “William”
Jeremiah - Hebrew for “YAHWEH will exalt”
Brandon - From a Surname that was derived from a place name meaning “hill covered with broom”
Q: In the Bible what can we see about people’ names?
They have significance, and meaning
Often a name represent the entire person themselves.
God often renamed people
Abram was renamed Abraham
Sarai was renamed Sarah
Jacob was renamed Israel
Simon to Peter
Saul’s name was changed to Paul
Q: What about God’s name, can you remember anything in the Bible about the use of Gods name?
Moses asked God before he went to speak to Pharoah. Whom shall I say sent me. God replied “I AM WHO I AM”
When Jesus was being persecuted by the religious leaders and they asked who he was and from what authority does he speak.
John 8:58–59 ESV
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.
A name has significance. in this context what does it mean to not take God’s name in vain?
Often we automatically think of not using the term “Oh my God”
This is right and true.
Leviticus 22:31–32 ESV
“So you shall keep my commandments and do them: I am the Lord. And you shall not profane my holy name, that I may be sanctified among the people of Israel. I am the Lord who sanctifies you,
But there is a deeper significance. In ancient times people used the name of a god as a way to invoke authority or power over things. The apostles cast out demons invoking the name of Jesus. We baptise in the name of God.
Likewise people attempt to use God’s name for the purpose to invoke power into a situation without having to submit to God.
Q: Have you heard of situations where people use God’s name for a specific purpose of their own?
God told me to marry you.
God told me that you should do this or that.
God told me that I need a new private jet.
How should we actually view God’s name?
Jesus tells us how to pray
Matthew 6:9–10 ESV
Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

4th Commandment

Exodus 20:8–11 ESV
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
Q: Do we take this seriously? Why does the 4th Commandment seem like its the one people are safe to ignore?
There is no other type of commandment like this in any of the eastern religions. It was set apart in a particular way

How it affects people

Since the beginning of time all that man did in order just to survive was to work. The 4th commandment establishes that we are not merely beasts of burden
Additionally, the command to rest on the 7th day is a sign that communicates that we ought to be free.
Deuteronomy 5:15 ESV
You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
The people who work constantly are not free but slaves.
The millionaire that works 7 days a weeks is rich but is slave to money.
Q: Are there practical benefits of the commandment?
Yesterday in pre engagement counseling the counselor Jeff had Chick Fil A and we started talking about how well they are doing
Gross Stores Per Store
1. McDonald's $40,410,000,000 39,198 $1,030,920
2. Starbucks $21,550,000,000 32,938 $654,260
3. Chick-fil-A $11,000,000,000 2,672 $4,116,766
Additionally, the commandment applies to all people. This is important because it humanizes the person who is a slave, they too are to rest. Even slaves have human right and therefore they too are human beings.
Q: Of all the things that God could command still, why did God command this?
Genesis 2:1–3 ESV
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.
What are the different way that we measure passing of time.
What is a day? A full rotation of the earth
What is a month? A full cycle of the phases of the moon
What is a year? The orbit of the earth 1 time around the sun.
All of these things can be determined by physically observing creation. All civilizations have been able to find out what each of these things were by discovery.
A week though is not, we have a 7 day week not because of something in the cosmos but because God defined it that way. Because of the Genesis event.
Faith in God brings people to the Sabbath and inversely
Observing the Sabbath brings people to God.
