Isaiah 61:1–3 ESV
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; 3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.
someone said once that “church is not a museum of saints but a hospital of sinners.”
The church should be a home for broken people. a place where they can find healing.
we should not expect broken people to be fixed first before finding a place.. they should find a place in the church where they can be fixed.
We are people of grace us that while we are not perfect, God’s grace abounds in us.
We are not perfect. In fact...
WE ARE IMPERFECT PEOPLE SAVED ONLY BY A PERFECT GOD.
Story of the church hopper..
In fact, we are all broken people to some degree. What?
“you are broken”
“Jesus can fix you”
Aren’t you glad that Jesus can fix you?
Turn to Jesus for...
1. His qualification.
Talk about self-help medicating, psychiatrists, bureaucrats
God’s anointing
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.”
He was sent by God
“He has sent Me...”
2. His mission
To bring good news to the poor
Talk about homelessness, - do our hearts break seeing them in traffic stops?
Well they made choices. They did that to themselves..
I am so glad and thankful that Jesus Christ does not think the way people do.
Beneath the addiction, the depression and their despondency lies a broken heart.
Bind up the brokenhearted
True healing of the broken heart
Psalm 147:3 ESV
3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
God can do heart surgery...
To proclaim liberty to the captives
Why, proclaim liberty ==> The Gospel, He gives the key
Jesus inaugurated His ministry by His first preaching..
Matthew 4:17 ESV
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Our Spirit has to be set free.
“… the opening of the prison to those who are bound,”
talk about the captives of Satan in the world
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God.”
describe Jubilee
Jesus brought us into a spiritual Jubilee
To comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion”
Jesus binds up our wounds.
There is a replacement that happens
3. His Promise.
“to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,”
A crown, a badge of Royalty..
The Crown of Righteousness
2 Timothy 4:8 ESV
8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.
The Crown of Glory
1 Peter 5:4 ESV
4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
The Crown of Life
“…Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10b)
“the oil of gladness instead of mourning”
overflowing with unending joy
“the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;”
“that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord,”
Philippians 1:11 ESV
11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
Jesus brings beauty, joy, praise and righteousness to our lives!
“That He may be glorified.
GOD IS GLORIFIED BY YOUR COMPLETE HEALING.
CHristine’s song here..
I talked about Jesus’ first preaching from Matthew 4 (repeat)
Luke 4:16–20 ESV
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” 20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.
Before Matthew 4, there is Luke 4.
“he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound”
“…recovering sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.”
Matthew 6:23 - How great is that darkness
Jesus came to save, but salvation is not separate from healing.
Jesus came to heal the total you - body, soul and spirit.
You may have a broken heart today.. the toughest heartbreak is when you have given your heart to someone, and crushed your heart
That is the story of Jesus in relation to mankind. He loved and was not loved in return.. they broke His heart into a million pieces.
