Intro and Frame Sermon

Do you ever feel like your Hope is not the Hope that Hannah had in the Bible when she prayed for a son?
Do you feel like your courage isn’t that of David against goliath sometimes?
Do you struggle to feel the strength that God has given to you through the death of his Son?
Sometimes we can read of the promises of God but we don’t feel like we have it. Today I want to explore how we can not only step into the promises of God but how we can grow in them.
Hebrews 6:11–12 ESV
And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
2nd Week New Series | Fix our eyes on Jesus | About going ALL IN | ALL IN on the presence of GOD | Bible said GREATEST NEED is the PRESENCE OF GOD | RIGHT, GOOD, BEAUTIFUL is in the presence of GOD | What does that look like?
Hebrews 12:1–3 ESV
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.
Last week we spoke about Going all in, about what REST really means and about stepping into God’s Presence.
This week, we are going to walk through Hebrews 5-7 in a very strange order and try and figure out how to stay there, How to find that Hope, how to find that Courage, strength and what the Author means that Jesus is our High Priest.
Title of this message: Let’s get on Solids
Hebrews 5-7 works as a bit of a Sandwich,
The author tells us that Jesus is the Great High Preist, in the order of Melchizedek, before issuing a warning, and encouragement before ending in ch 7 about this High Priest in the Order of Melchizedek - We are going to unpack this a little bit today.

The Order of Melchizedek

Hebrews 5:5–6 ESV
So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”
There is a correlation here between Melchizedek and Jesus; Who is Melchizedek?
Genesis 14:17–24 ESV
After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.” But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted my hand to the Lord, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth, that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’ I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me. Let Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre take their share.”
king of righteousness’ - king of “peace” Salem, greek, Shalem, root word Shalom = Peace.
Priest: “The one who stands and talks to God on your behalf”
To understand this, we have to explain what the Priest was: Preists came from the Line of Levi | Aaron brother of Moses was from the Tribe of Levi, first High Priest. to be a high Priest had to come from Aaron | but Melchizedek didn’t.
What did a Priest do? They would take the sacrafice, kill it for their sins and that of those that came - They stood between the sinner and God.
Scriptures do not record beginning and end of Melchizedek, there is no geneology | He didn’t come from the line of Aaron - neither did Jesus - Jesus was from the Tribe of Judah | So that priesthood didn’t die |
The author of Hebrews quotes Psalm 110
Psalm 110:4 ESV
The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
This was written hundreds of years AFTER the old Preisthood |
WHY is he saying all these things? Why?
He is trying to convey that the old priesthood has now been done away with and a new priest has been risen on our behalf!
Jesus is the successor of the priest but not according to the LAW but according to the Order of Melchezadeck.
Hebrews 7:25 ESV
Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
He is the great High Priest- Yes Jesus is the Saviour but also the thing between us and the father, and we get to live in that Presence.
What is the difference between a priest and Jesus talking to the Father about you? He understands because he became the flesh | He understands what you need | When you Hurt | When you Pray | He knows, he gets it. and he wants you to grab on that eternal HOPE and REST in All that you do.
*The only way to the father is through me*

It’s all about grabbing onto this Hope

Hebrews 6:9–12 ESV
Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation. For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do. And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
Full Assurance of Hope is attainable | It’s there to grab, the Author is saying that through Jesus Christ, through teaching of the Scripture we can attain this - however - there is a warning here against being sluggish.
What is the Author talking about
**Remember the Context**
Hebrews 5:11–14 ESV
About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
Colossians 1:28–29 ESV
Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.
To obtain this Hope, that Hannah had, to obtain the courage of David, God is urging us to get onto the meat- This is where, in the Presence of God we will not be swayed |
Baby illustration **Soccer Game - Pewees Story**
Paul warns the Corinth Church that they are still babies - went there in 50 AD, and wrote the letter in 55AD -Which means he believes it takes 5 years to become a Mature Christian.
He warns about our Perspective, and becoming a Fleshy Christian, what is a fleshy Christian?
I live for things of SELF over things for Christ
I live for things of CHRIST over things for SELF
What is the number 1 reason why people fall from the presense of God?
Pride - It’s Pride

Let’s quickly unpack Pride

Pride will keep you out of the Presence of God and his Promises for you - it’s too important not to talk about.
Don’t elbow someone next to you
Someone asked: Is all pride bad? No, you can be proud if your child is kind.
Sinful Pride: an elevation of ourselves above others and a denial of our need for God.
3 types of sinful pride:
“I am better than you pride” | Pharisee looking down on Tax Collector
“No one works as hard as me, everyone is stupid, can’t beleive that person would do that”
It’s bread from a feeling of failure and Insecurity | Marriage is the best relationship outside GOd | Your SPOUSE chooses you | God Chose you | He can accept your Failures
2. “I can handle it pride” | Subtle | Creeps up and wil cause you to look back | Love to give, find it difficult to accept a gift or help | Rarely pray, morning, but not in front of everytihng | When you pray. flat, predictable. |
When you don’t pray faithfully, your lack of prayer is a declaration that you don’t need God.
Genesis 3: Adam didn’t even ask Eve, or ask God, what would have happened if eve just stopped, and asked her husband, or God
Pride Cycle: Think you can handle it | Sin | Shame | Cover it up | Back to Pride |
why do we cover it up? Adam and Eve realised naked, they covered it up | We think we can handle it, so we cover it up, we act like we are all that | If this is you, ask for help. Spiritually struggling, ask for help, mentally hard, ask for help please.
Come back, to the presence of God.
3. “That doesn’t apply to me Pride” |
Proverbs 16:18 ESV
Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
Status without accountabiltiy is breeding ground for pride | When we have pride, set for a fall |
“I don’t need to tithe, We are married in our hearts, it’s just a small sin, It was a white lie” Have you thought somewhere in your life you were above the rules?
**King David**
1 Peter 5:5–6 ESV
Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,
Put your Pride Down, let God lift you up, and fix your eyes on Jesus
**Show Video**
Sinful Pride is an elevation of ourselves above others and a denial of our need for God.
World says: “Fight for yourself, promote yourself, do it for yourself”
God says: “Humble yourselves, deny yourselves”
God wants us to grow up, he wants us to be mature, do you know the best way to stay in God’s presence…make sure that you can’t run very fast - What’s the opposite of Pride?
Humility | on knees | Lay down
When you get back up, fix your eyes on Jesus so you can grab onto that hope

Conclusion

This series is about going ALL IN - and it;s going to get heavy, but remember, we have a High Priest in Jesus Christ here with you | You’re not alone and God’s promises are worth it - but it’s gotta be a reaction to God’s love
