Matthew 11:28–30 NIV
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Come to Me
strong words from Jesus
Jesus is ready and able to fulfill all of the promises of God
come to me is not a selfish attitude
we need to put aside our independence
and we approach Jesus - take a step toward him
Examples of Come
Jesus asked the disciples to come and follow him
Jesus told Peter to come and walk on water
Jesus told the young man to sell all and follow him
we must first come to Jesus before we can do anything else
Weary and Burdened
Matthew 11:28 NIV
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
weary and burdened are terms we often used and often experience
from the day of the Fall, man and woman have toiled and struggled
toiled against the earth
struggled against the influence of sin in their lives
it is the same for us when we are separated from Jesus
the toil and the struggle is there and we can become weary and burdened
Promise of Rest
Jesus is always the answer
I will give you rest
rest from weariness
rest from burdens
yet the key is to come to Jesus
not just a token wave of acknowledgement
a serious and sustained commitment to his lordship
Isaiah 40:31 NIV
but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Our Relationship to Jesus
hope in the Lord renews our strength , removes weariness
coming to the Lord creates hope
hope flows to us because of the mercy of Jesus in forgiving our sin and paying our debt
so knowing Jesus is the first step
we must continue to allow Jesus into our life
Are You Thirsty
John 7:37–38 NIV
On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”
thirsty is a single minded overwhelming craving when you lack water
there is a spiritual thirst that we all have
a craving for the spiritual, a desire to be free
Jesus is the spring of life giving water
we must come to Jesus to the spring
we need to go deeper and be full of Jesus
no matter who we are, stay thirsty for Jesus
