Genesis 1:27 ESV
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
Created in His Image

Images are created to image.

This was was in the Garden…
His Image in the Flesh
Not only did He make man but provided for him everything that he needed
When God created us, he created us with desire. And he did it for a purpose.
Genesis 2:9 ESV
And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Genesis 2:16–17 ESV
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
The function of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is to make sure that the pleasures of all the other trees in the garden are supremely pleasures in God.
John Piper said…
God was saying...
I have given you life
I have given you a world full of pleasure —
Pleasures of taste and sight and sound and smell and feel and nourishment.
Only one tree is forbidden to you.
So don’t eat from the tree, because you will be rejecting me and all my good gifts and all my wisdom and all my care.
Instead, keep on submitting to my will.
Keep on affirming my wisdom.
Keep on being thankful for my generosity
You’re my Creation / My Image / My Responsibility
Think about this…
This is the purpose of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Points to the true object of our desires.
Will you seek fulfillment in the life of God or in the things of earth?
Adam and Eve chose to fulfill their desire…
When they ate they Died!!!!!! (Break Mirror)
Genesis 3:6–7 ESV
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
The woman saw that the tree was good for food..... But God already provided food
A delight to the eyes… (Desire)
The Tree was to be desired to make one wise....
“Then the eyes of both were opened” - “They knew that they were naked”
Genesis 2:25 ESV
And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
Instantly they are aware and ashamed....
The knowledge of good and evil creates a fearful urge to cover themselves.
knowledge n. — the psychological result of perception and learning and reasoning; sometimes simply endowed by God (often with focus on application of the knowledge).
Evil (quality) n. — the quality of being morally wrong in principle or practice.
Good adj. — having desirable or positive qualities; especially those suitable for a thing specified.
Genesis 3:8–10 ESV
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”
“I Was Afraid”
“I Was Naked”
“I hid myself”
The result of a broken Image....
Their eyes were open.....
They were a broken image…
Driven by the desire to be......
Genesis 3:11 ESV
He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
“Who told you that you were naked?”
This is why we need the Holy Spirit.....
Ephesians 4:20–24 ESV
But that is not the way you learned Christ!— assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
