Psalm 95

Psalm 95:1–11 HCSB
1 Come, let us shout joyfully to the Lord, shout triumphantly to the rock of our salvation! 2 Let us enter His presence with thanksgiving; let us shout triumphantly to Him in song. 3 For the Lord is a great God, a great King above all gods. 4 The depths of the earth are in His hand, and the mountain peaks are His. 5 The sea is His; He made it. His hands formed the dry land. 6 Come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. 7 For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, the sheep under His care. Today, if you hear His voice: 8 Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as on that day at Massah in the wilderness 9 where your fathers tested Me; they tried Me, though they had seen what I did. 10 For 40 years I was disgusted with that generation; I said, “They are a people whose hearts go astray; they do not know My ways.” 11 So I swore in My anger, “They will not enter My rest.”

Psalm 95:1-2
Psalm 95:1–2 HCSB
1 Come, let us shout joyfully to the Lord, shout triumphantly to the rock of our salvation! 2 Let us enter His presence with thanksgiving; let us shout triumphantly to Him in song.
So first thing i want us to look at here is the two verbs describing how we must come before the Lord

shout/sing joyfully - ranan

shout/sing triumphantly - rua

Now we all know can somewhat understand what it means to sing joyfully and triumphantly but lets take a look at when these verbs where used to describe an actual event
The first one Rana translated joyfully is first used in the old testament in Lev 9:24, this happens just over a year after the Israelites have been freed from Egypt, but they had a busy year, here are some of the things that preceded this event,
Leviticus 9:24 HCSB
24 Fire came from the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted and fell facedown on the ground.
they’d passed through the RED SEA,
THE LORD TURNED BITTER WATER PURE,
FED BY MANNA AND QUAIL,
they then left the WILDERNESS OF SIN and saw the LORD give them water from a rock
they saw the LORD give victory to them against the AMALEKITES when Moses held up his hands over the battlefield
They had seen the Glory of the Lord upon Mt Sinai and the face of moses glowing,
Assembled all the pieces to the tabernacle
So here they are at the Inaguration of the Priestly Ministry of the tebernacle, The poeple were told to bring an offering because “TODAY THE LORD IS GOING TO APPEAR TO YOU”
After all the sacrafices had been given we take up at verse 24
Leviticus 9:24 HCSB
24 Fire came from the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted and fell facedown on the ground.
So this is the idea the psalmist has in mind when using this word, second he uses the word Rua.
Now to understand what the psalmist means when he uses this word we will need to turn to Joshua chapter 6 and the ever popular story of the Conquest of Jericho. This takes place after the death of Moses and Joshua is called to lead the Israelites across the Jordan into the promised land.
Now when the Israelites picked up to cross the Jordan the Lord did the same miracle he had done at the red sea and dried up the water to they crossed over on dry land, now the Lord did this we read in Josh 4:24
Joshua 4:24 HCSB
24 This is so that all the people of the earth may know that the Lord’s hand is mighty, and so that you may always fear the Lord your God.”
And when they arrived on the other side all the kings of the surrounding kingdoms where filled with fear and it tell us

they lost heart and their courage failed because of the Israelites.

So next God in his humanly wisdom say’s this in Josh 5:2
Joshua 5:2 HCSB
2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelite men again.”
And verse 3 Joshua understanding the infinite wisdom of God Josh 5:3
Joshua 5:3 HCSB
3 So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelite men at Gibeath-haaraloth.
And here we see they named the place Gibeath-haaraloth, or hill of foreskins.
Now the reason they needed to do this is because God did not allow any of the Men who had come out of Egypt to cross over into the Promised Land because of their lack of faith, so during the 40 years of wandering in the desert none of the young men were circumcised.
So there they stayed until they recovered.
Celebrated a Passover
and ate from the land because they manna finally ceased after 40 years
Next we find Joshua as he’’s waiting on the Lord go on a little reconnocence mission to take a look at the city of Jericho
so picking up here at Josh 5:13-15
Joshua 5:13–15 HCSB
13 When Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in His hand. Joshua approached Him and asked, “Are You for us or for our enemies?” 14 “Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as commander of the Lord’s army.” Then Joshua bowed with his face to the ground in worship and asked Him, “What does my Lord want to say to His servant?” 15 The commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.
Continuing in Josh 6:1-5
Joshua 6:1–5 HCSB
1 Now Jericho was strongly fortified because of the Israelites—no one leaving or entering. 2 The Lord said to Joshua, “Look, I have handed Jericho, its king, and its fighting men over to you. 3 March around the city with all the men of war, circling the city one time. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry seven ram’s-horn trumpets in front of the ark. But on the seventh day, march around the city seven times, while the priests blow the trumpets. 5 When there is a prolonged blast of the horn and you hear its sound, have all the people give a mighty shout. Then the city wall will collapse, and the people will advance, each man straight ahead.”
So all that to say back to Psalm 95:1
Psalm 95:1 HCSB
1 Come, let us shout joyfully to the Lord, shout triumphantly to the rock of our salvation!
Let us shout and sing Joyfully, in awe, in reverence, in fear towords the LORD
Let us shout and sing triumphantly, from victory, from faith, from assurance to the rock of our salvation!
Now to Psalm 95:2
Psalm 95:2 HCSB
2 Let us enter His presence with thanksgiving; let us shout triumphantly to Him in song.
You see the correlation there, with the first verb they shouted in his presence and what does the first line here say, let us enter His Presence with thanksgiving!
When did the fire and presence of the Lord desend upon the altar in Lev 9?
It descended immedietly after the Israelites offer thier
Fellowship/Peace offerings for thanksgiving
Psalm 95:3–5 HCSB
3 For the Lord is a great God, a great King above all gods. 4 The depths of the earth are in His hand, and the mountain peaks are His. 5 The sea is His; He made it. His hands formed the dry land.
Psalm 95:6–7 HCSB
6 Come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. 7 For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, the sheep under His care. Today, if you hear His voice:
John 10:27 HCSB
27 My sheep hear My voice, I know them, and they follow Me.

Today, if you hear His voice:

8 Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah,

as on that day at Massah in the wilderness

9 where your fathers tested Me;

they tried Me, though they had seen what I did.

they’d passed through the RED SEA,
THE LORD TURNED BITTER WATER PURE,
FED BY MANNA AND QUAIL
Hebrews 3:19 HCSB
19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.
Heb 4:2 For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.
Galatians 3:2 HCSB
2 I only want to learn this from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law or by hearing with faith?

The boy Samuel served the LORD in Eli’s presence. In those days the word of the LORD was rare and prophetic visions were not widespread.

2 One day Eli, whose eyesight was failing, was lying in his room. 3 Before the lamp of God had gone out, Samuel was lying down in the tabernacle of the LORD, where the ark of God was located.

4 Then the LORD called Samuel, and he answered, “Here I am.” 5 He ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

“I didn’t call,” Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.

6 Once again the LORD called, “Samuel!”

Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

“I didn’t call, my son,” he replied. “Go back and lie down.”

7 Now Samuel had not yet experienced the LORD, because the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. 8 Once again, for the third time, the LORD called Samuel. He got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

Then Eli understood that the LORD was calling the boy. 9 He told Samuel, “Go and lie down. If He calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

19 For you people will live on Zion in Jerusalem and will never cry again. He will show favor to you at the sound of your cry; when He hears, He will answer you. 20 The Lord will give you meager bread and water during oppression, but your Teacher will not hide Himself any longer. Your eyes will see your Teacher, 21 and whenever you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear this command behind you: “This is the way. Walk in it.”

Psalm 19:1–4 HCSB
1 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky proclaims the work of His hands. 2 Day after day they pour out speech; night after night they communicate knowledge. 3 There is no speech; there are no words; their voice is not heard. 4 Their message has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens He has pitched a tent for the sun.
Romans 1:18–20 HCSB
18 For God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth, 19 since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what He has made. As a result, people are without excuse.
Psalm 95:8–11 HCSB
8 Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as on that day at Massah in the wilderness 9 where your fathers tested Me; they tried Me, though they had seen what I did. 10 For 40 years I was disgusted with that generation; I said, “They are a people whose hearts go astray; they do not know My ways.” 11 So I swore in My anger, “They will not enter My rest.”
Revelation 3:20–21 HCSB
20 Listen! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and have dinner with him, and he with Me. 21 The victor: I will give him the right to sit with Me on My throne, just as I also won the victory and sat down with My Father on His throne.
Isaiah 30:8–21 HCSB
8 Go now, write it on a tablet in their presence and inscribe it on a scroll; it will be for the future, forever and ever. 9 They are a rebellious people, deceptive children, children who do not want to obey the Lord’s instruction. 10 They say to the seers, “Do not see,” and to the prophets, “Do not prophesy the truth to us. Tell us flattering things. Prophesy illusions. 11 Get out of the way! Leave the pathway. Rid us of the Holy One of Israel.” 12 Therefore the Holy One of Israel says: “Because you have rejected this message and have trusted in oppression and deceit, and have depended on them, 13 this iniquity of yours will be like a spreading breach, a bulge in a high wall whose collapse will come in an instant—suddenly! 14 Its collapse will be like the shattering of a potter’s jar, crushed to pieces, so that not even a fragment of pottery will be found among its shattered remains— no fragment large enough to take fire from a hearth or scoop water from a cistern.” 15 For the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, has said: “You will be delivered by returning and resting; your strength will lie in quiet confidence. But you are not willing.” 16 You say, “No! We will escape on horses”— therefore you will escape!— and, “We will ride on fast horses”— but those who pursue you will be faster. 17 One thousand will flee at the threat of one, at the threat of five you will flee, until you alone remain like a solitary pole on a mountaintop or a banner on a hill. 18 Therefore the Lord is waiting to show you mercy, and is rising up to show you compassion, for the Lord is a just God. All who wait patiently for Him are happy.
Galatians 3:5 HCSB
5 So then, does God supply you with the Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law or by hearing with faith?
