Introduction:
A Commentary on the Psalms 1–89, Volumes 1 & 2: Commentary Composition and Context
Without the LORD’s presence the city would be an ordinary city, and the sanctuary would not be lovely or desirable.
Every been somewhere where you felt the lack of His presence?
Ever been in a place where you knew He was working through you to be present? (cousins funeral)
I know that wise brethren say, “You should not give way to feelings of depression.” If those who blame quite so furiously could once know what depression is, they would think it cruel to sca!er blame where comfort is needed. "ere are experiences of the children of God, which are full of spiritual darkness. And I’m almost persuaded those of God’s servants who have been most highly favored have never less suffered more times of darkness than others. No sin is necessarily connected with sorrow of heart, for Jesus Christ our Lord once said, “My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death.” "ere was no sin in Him, and, consequently, none in His deep depression. (He continues:) So the way of sorrow is not always the way of sin, but a hallowed road sanctified by the prayers of myriads of pilgrims now with God—pilgrims who, passing through the Valley of Baca (literally “of weeping”) made it a well. "rain also filled with pools. Of such it is written: “"they go from strength to strength, everyone of them in Zion appearing before God.” Spurgeon
We are a blessed people. As we read please circle these in your Bible.

Blessed House Dwellers
Blessed House Dwellers
Let’s get some context before we begin reading.
Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee. Selah.
And the porters were, Shallum, and Akkub, and Talmon, and Ahiman, and their brethren: Shallum was the chief; Who hitherto waited in the king’s gate eastward: they were porters in the companies of the children of Levi. And Shallum the son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his brethren, of the house of his father, the Korahites, were over the work of the service, keepers of the gates of the tabernacle: and their fathers, being over the host of the LORD, were keepers of the entry.
The sons of Korah were to watch the entry of the tabernacle.
Look at who God used to write this Psalm.
What a wonderful thing to be in the presence of God. This family got to work in the entrance. They were there all the time.
Now we read!
To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm for the sons of Korah.
How amiable are thy tabernacles, O LORD of hosts! My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God. Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O LORD of hosts, my King, and my God. Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee. Selah. Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee; in whose heart are the ways of them. Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools. They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appeareth before God.
O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer: give ear, O God of Jacob. Selah. Behold, O God our shield, and look upon the face of thine anointed. For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. O LORD of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.
A. Love to be in God’s presence
1. Remember passages talking about missing it.
Psalm 42:1–3 (AV)
As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?
2. Desire to be back at Zion, that Holy hill.
Psalm 43:2–3 (AV)
For thou art the God of my strength: why dost thou cast me off? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.
3. Reminds us our passage this morning.
B. Presence was not just in the temple.
But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?
C. Temple is a loved place because God’s presence is there.
Not that it was just a great building.
Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O LORD of hosts, my King, and my God.
b. If I was a bird this is the bird I would want to be.
The presence of God as the place where the humble find a home. It’s really a great description, when you think about it, of the people of God: humble, lowly, common people who find majestic meaning in gathering before God.- Platt
D. He loved to sing in God’s presence.
My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.
Might say it isn’t singing. Sounds like a description to me of some of our singing.
Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands:
2. He loved to sing God’s praise.

Blessed to be a people who have a God more than worthy of our trust
O LORD of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.
We are so blessed to have a place to put our trust.
Anyone have testimony of this?
Regardless of our proximity to the Temple we are blessed to trust in God.
2. God came and dwelt with us.
a. Better than going to the Temple. The Temple came to us.
John 1:14 (AV)
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
