A Futile Conspiracy (1-3)

A question for the rebellious nations: Why?
They take counsel against the Lord … a vain thing.
There is a tendency in fallen man to try to rule over others (goes all the way back to Nimrod).
Gen 10:9-12 - Nimrod means “we shall rebel”.
There is a tendency to fret when we see the world aligning itself against the Lord and His people.
The early church realized that the crucifixion of Jesus was the climax of the world’s conspiracy against Christ. - Acts 4:23-26; the final culmination will be when the antichrist and his forces try to prevent Christ from returning to His throne.

The Lord’s Sovereignty (4-6)

Instead of fretting look at the Lord’s sovereignty over the entire situation.
The Lord has determined that Christ will rule!
Notice the progression of his response: he laughs (he makes them a joke), he mocks the rebellious, he is angry, and then moves in his wrath (hot, fierce anger).
The schemes of man will come to ruin, God has set His man upon the throne!

The Father’s Decree (7-9)

A promise from the Father to the Son - this is as sure as the unity of God Himself.
The kingdoms of this world all belong to the Lord and He will rule over them in righteousness.
Revelation 2:27 ESV
27 and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father.
Revelation 12:5 ESV
5 She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne,

An Invitation to Humility (10-12)

What should be the response of every person, particularly those who rule in government positions.
Humble recognition that Christ is King, and they will give an account to Him.
Kiss the Son - an act of obedience.
