5th Commandment
5th Commandment
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
Q: What are your thoughts about this commandment?
Of everything that God could command us to do make a top 10 list. Why would this one be on there unless it is really that important.
First - Is this commandment relating to relationship with other people or with God.
On the surface it seems like its about people but in fact its both. Here is why.
When you were a kid did you not have a side of you that wanted to be rebellious. When your parents told you to do something you wanted to do the opposite. This is historically accurate. Often time how things play out is if parents are one way the child will be another way. If the parents are very conservative the child often turn very liberal. If the parents are very liberal the child will turn to conservatism.
Why is there that notion that the pastors kids are many time the ones that are the wildest.
God knows this and parents direct children in they way that they live life, they set a standard.
Because we feel the pull to disobey God commanded children to listen to their parents instruction.
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
Notice though that the commandment isnt an isolated statement. It has an effect if you obey.
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
Well we arent inheriting any land, we are not the Israelites listening to the the commandments at Mt Sinai. Do we have anything to look forward to?
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Q: How does listening to parents lead to long life?
They have already gone through life. They have already seen things that are dangerous, maybe they have had friends or family pass away so they have knowledge to pass on.
Additionally this plays into the larger aspect of authority. Being able to obey your fallible parents who do know more than you will set you up to be respect authority when you grow up. Be it a manager, law enforcement, etc.
Being able to respect authority will directly correlate to how the people would have a long a prosperous life as the promise from the 5th commandment says
If you cannot obey the authorities in this life that you can see and are speaking directly to you how can you then obey God who you cannot see and docent reprimand you immediately for everything that you have done wrong.
Additionally, the strong connection between generations promotes faith in God.
Remember that when the Israelites they were to commanded to slaughter the lamb at passover. they were given specific instructions on what to do and their families were there to observer. There is a passage that points out something important about the parent child relationship.
And when your children say to you, ‘What do you mean by this service?’ you shall say, ‘It is the sacrifice of the Lord’s Passover, for he passed over the houses of the people of Israel in Egypt, when he struck the Egyptians but spared our houses.’ ” And the people bowed their heads and worshiped.
It was important for the parents to learn the commandments and follow them if not they the knowledge of God would be lost.
“When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the Lord our God has commanded you?’ then you shall say to your son, ‘We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt. And the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
What was the first statement that was made to them before the first commandment?
That would not make sense if the children refused to honor and listen to their parents. The commandments and knowledge of the work that has happened in history could have been lost in a single generation since usually oral transmission was most common.
What the world will lean toward
But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
What does this look like practically though?
It ties into how people are taken care in old age. For you and I when we age we will have retirement plans, 401k’s etc. This is not how history was done.
Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.
But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God.
Q: Practically what does it look like to honor your parents?
This means weighing out what your parents tell you and respect their wishes.
6th Commandment
6th Commandment
“You shall not murder.
Fairly Straightforward.
Have you ever heard people recite this commandment and they say “Thou shall not kill”
Is that accurate?
What is the difference between murder and kill
What is the definition of Murder?
Unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another
The killing of a person without justification or excuse, especially the crime of killing a person with malice.
The recklessness manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life.
What is the definition of kill?
To take the life of something or someone else
To describe taking the life of an animal or anything else that is not human we should always use the word kill.
Murder implies moral wrong.
Did you know that the Bible also deals with Manslaughter, accidentally killing someone.
“When the Lord your God cuts off the nations whose land the Lord your God is giving you, and you dispossess them and dwell in their cities and in their houses, you shall set apart three cities for yourselves in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess. You shall measure the distances and divide into three parts the area of the land that the Lord your God gives you as a possession, so that any manslayer can flee to them. “This is the provision for the manslayer, who by fleeing there may save his life. If anyone kills his neighbor unintentionally without having hated him in the past— as when someone goes into the forest with his neighbor to cut wood, and his hand swings the axe to cut down a tree, and the head slips from the handle and strikes his neighbor so that he dies—he may flee to one of these cities and live,
How does this work when God commanded all of this killing during war?
And the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not fear and do not be dismayed. Take all the fighting men with you, and arise, go up to Ai. See, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, and his people, his city, and his land. And you shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king. Only its spoil and its livestock you shall take as plunder for yourselves. Lay an ambush against the city, behind it.”
Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’ ”
And when David inquired of the Lord, he said, “You shall not go up; go around to their rear, and come against them opposite the balsam trees. And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then rouse yourself, for then the Lord has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.” And David did as the Lord commanded him, and struck down the Philistines from Geba to Gezer.
Why did God use people and command them to kill another group?
Could he not have just struck down the nations himself?
If nature were to strike them down then the nations would not understand that the God of Israel reigns, they were to be used as God’s instrument of judgement.
Interestingly enough when Jesus meets the centurion, who is a man who goes to war and commands many he does not ask him to change professions.
a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.
Additionally we need to talk about this. We look at the Bible and think, God commands that infants be slaughtered. We try to take the moral high ground and judge Him.
Understand this, children who die before whats called the age of accountability God will judge them differently. But it is wrong for people in this country who support, either actively or passively the murder of hundreds, thousands and millions of unborn children.
When does life start?

Last point, if any guy here. If you are messing with a girl and you guys have sex, that's your first sin and your first mistake.
If that leads to her being pregnant, do not add a worse sin to it and take the life of an innocent. Do not put other people’s opinions about you and what you have done above someone’s life, an innocent child.
God already knows that you have sinned, do not make it worse. That child is made in His image, do not take their life. Talk to me
