John 1:14-18
John 1:14-18
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
JESUS WAS FULLY GOD AND FULLY MAN
JESUS WAS FULLY GOD AND FULLY MAN
The Word became flesh
Let’s consider this:
The ugly duckling BECAME a beautiful Swan
The caterpillar became a beautiful butterfly
Or even a tadpole becomes a frog.
These are examples we see of a special type of change, We don’t call a swan an ugly duckling, its a swan.
We don’t call a butterfly a caterpillar, its a butterfly. It became a butterfly and that’s what it is.
In this case The Word became flesh: but there is a difference.
The Word that is God, became flesh but is still God.
The Word became flesh (flesh like us!!)
Dwelt among us
Dwelt among us
DWELT- to dwell in a tent. To place a tent.
God Himself has set up a tent of flesh and was with us
14 “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.
23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”
and we saw his glory......
and we saw his glory......
we saw His splendor, brightness, honor,
In the Old Testament, Moses (under God’s instruction), set up a Tent, “The Tent of meeting” (Exodus 33:7).
So, in John we see the Word God became flesh and had set up His Tent, His Tabernacle and was among his People. THIS IS TRULY PERSONAL
And what happens when God is in the midst? His Glory is shown.
We saw His Glory
We saw His Glory
saw - beheld, gazed) His glory (splendor, brightness, honor, majesty)
1 Six days later Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves.
2 And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light.
They seen His Glory. Miracles, teaching, They saw His Glory and we will see it!!!!!
Of the One and only begotten......
Of the One and only begotten......
The one and only, to set apart.
Jesus was fully man and fully God, He was set apart.
John’s statement
John’s statement
15 John testified about Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’ ”
John Cried out - scream - in a loud voice!!!
John says the Jesus is Lord
PAST STATEMENT
Was - already
EXISTED - same word
16 For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.
In the fullest of who he is, Who Jesus is we receive grace upon grace (favor upon favor)
17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.
God gave the law through Moses
Showing His grace and truth in the giving of the law.
But is made fully available through Christ in grace and truth.
18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.
We see here again the fullest of the relationship with the Son and the Father.
In Exodus 33-34 we see Moses ask God wo see his Glory
in Exodus 33:11 Moses spoke to God face to face. What does that mean?
Moses saw the aftermath / back of God’s Glory.
It is safe to say that Moses spoke to God face to face, but did not see see the fullest of the Father.
But Jesus, who is fully God and fully man. set up a tent on His created Earth to make His truth and His Grace known.

19 This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
20 And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”
21 They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
22 Then they said to him, “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”
23 He said, “I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”
24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.
25 They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26 John answered them saying, “I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know.
27 “It is He who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”
28 These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
John’s Testimony
John’s Testimony
19 This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
20 And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”
Because of John’s amazing preaching and the authority that he had. The Israeli religious elite wanted to know who he was.
When they were asking “Who he was” they were asking him if he was the Christ.
John’s Testimony to them was that
He was not the Christ
With the language set up in his response “He confessed and did not deny, but confessed….” Show that John could have even been upset at the question. That he answered it with hostility
21 They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
22 Then they said to him, “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”
So why did they ask if JOHN was Elijah?
So why did they ask if JOHN was Elijah?
5 “Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord.
The Jews were expecting Elijah to return. So they were asking If John was Elijah.
Why did they ask if JOHN was the Prophet?
Why did they ask if JOHN was the Prophet?
18 ‘I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.
There has not been a prophet of God for the past 400 years.
This tells us that these men knew the scriptures. (but the did not recognize Him)
Just because we may know the scriptures doesn't mean that we know God.
JOHN WAS NOT THE LIGHT, HE WAS NOT THE CHRIST.
What did John say he was?
What did John say he was?
23 He said, “I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”
John made it clear that he was nothing but “A Voice” He was not anything special
Sandals to untie. This was the service of the lowest slave. This was a demeaning task, for a slave to carry the sandals of the master.
But John made it clear, that he was unworthy even untie Jesus sandals let alone carry them.
John Test Part 2
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
30 “This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’
31 “I did not recognize Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing in water.”
32 John testified saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.
33 “I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’
34 “I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God.”
35 Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples,
36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”
37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
