Obituary-
Song #1- Amazing Grace
Scripture Passage-
A Psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
3 He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.

Message-
One of the honors I have as a pastor is to learn about the lives of loved ones as their family and friends remember them.
I didn’t know Tim really well before he passed, but it gives me much joy to listen to you talk about him. I can tell you all loved and cared for him very much.
Tim was a proto-typical American man.
Grew up playing baseball
Family man- He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
Even though Deborah didn’t like him at first, he eventually got his girl. He married to Deborah in 1987. They were married for 33 years
He knew not to take family for granted. He lost his mother to cancer when he was just 18. Something like that makes you cherish everyday.
Many of you have said that once you got to know Tim, he turned out to be a wonderful friend. He spent a lot of time at the fence with his neighbors talking about life- maybe getting advice on how to keep his old mower running.
Truck driver- Like his dad. He played his part in making America tick.
He loved to play- He could not wait to get home on the weekends because he loved to play softball. Later he picked up pool.
Loved motorcycles, talking to truckers on his CB Radio.
He loved Branson, roller coasters, and food at the county fair (bacon wrapped turkey legs and roast beef Sunday)
He’s been described as a a jokester, ornery (rotten)
Feared God- He grew up a Baptist favorite song was Amazing Grace-
John Newton wrote the song as a response to personal experience.
After leaving the British navy, he found his way into an immoral life as part of the slave trade. He was not a religious man, but in 1748, when a storm hit his boat and threatened to sink it off of Ireland and he begged God for deliverance. God did, and Newton marked that occasion as his conversion to Christ.
He eventually found his way out of the slave trade and he became a minister.
Upon reflecting on his despicable past, and God’s willingness to forgive even the worst sins of those who humble themselves before Him, Newton wrote Amazing Grace.
Amazing Grace (Grace means gift, kindness, forgiveness, redemption, amazing in that it defies reason and the normal order of things)
How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me (Grace is a welcome gift for people who realize the magnitude of their sin before God)
I once was lost (reference to the status of people who are still in their sins; they are not where they are supposed to be)
But now I’m found (reference to those who humble themselves, repent of their sins in Christ Jesus, and walk with God)
Was blind (another reference to the status of people who are still in their sins- they think they are right, they can’t see that they are wrong)
But now I see. (reference to those who humble themselves, repent of their sins in Christ Jesus, and walk with God- they look back and realize they had a scales over their eyes)
The song is a recognition of the love of God and His willingness to passover judgment on those who turn to Him in repentance and relationship.
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
Admit
Believe
Call
The interesting thing about this song is that it’s estimated to be sung 10,000,000 times each day. Yet, few people follow its guidance to repent of sin, call on Christ as Savior and Lord, and walk with God for the rest of their lives.
If you would like to talk about how to be saved from your sins, how to experience amazing grace. I would be happy to show you how the Bible says to do so.
Tim was a great guy. He was dearly loved. My prayer is that the Lord will comfort all of you as you mourn his passing and give thanks to God for His life.
Maybe his favorite hymn will be a comfort for you.
