Thought : When faith is a substance then it is something you can use. A power that you can deploy. If faith is an attitude of trust, faith becomes somehting that is in regard to something external to you. To trust in something shifts focus from your capaibility to someon or something outside of you, e.g., I trusht my parachute, I trust my rights as a citizen, I trust the doctor, I trust God [ I have faith towards God] I can try to maintain my trust, recognize my trust, I must remeber who I trust, But I can’t use my trust to do something. My trust is in something or someone else who accomplishes the benefit. Because faith points to someone outside of me that does things.
John 6:26–29 (ESV)26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”

Hebrews 3:12–4:6 (ESV)12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15 As it is said,
“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
16 For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.
4 Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. 2 For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened. 3 For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said,
“As I swore in my wrath,
‘They shall not enter my rest,’ ” .... 5 And again in this passage he said, “They shall not enter my rest.” 6 Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience,
Copeland Monthly letter datd August 2021 - handwritten in upper left hand corner of front page “Faith is the substance!”
Letter quote Hebrews 11 (KJV 1900)11 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen
Hebrews 11:1–2 (ESV)By Faith 11 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation..
Hebrews 11:1–2 (HCSB)Heroes of Faith11 Now faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen. 2 For our ancestors won God’s approval by it.
Hebrews 11:1–2 (NIV84)By Faith 11 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. 2 This is what the ancients were commended for.
Hebrews 11:1–2 (LEB)Examples of Faith in Action11 Now faith is the realization of what is hoped for, the proof of things not seen. 2 For by this the people of old were approved.
The word is hupostasis: it means that which undelies the apparent, reality, essence, substance, tha which is the basis of something , confidence. My usage for the word it is trust [from being true, being real, reality]
other references Ephesians 2:7–9 (LEB) 8 For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 it is not from works, so that no one can boast.
Romans 1:16–17 (ESV)The Righteous Shall Live by Faith 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
Habakkuk 2:4 (ESV)4 “Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith.
Galatians 3:10–14 (ESV)The Righteous Shall Live by Faith 10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” 12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. We are redeemed from the curse of the law.
