Jesus His Son
Sunday, December 30, 2007
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7
1.
Today, let us remember that these letters came into being because of a situation that arose in the infant Christian Church.
They were wrote with pastoral intent and purpose.
2. It is the intent and purpose of Christian preaching at all times and on all occasions to be preaching Christ Jesus the Lord.
It is also good for us that are believers to remind ourselves of the facts and details lest we tend to assume we know them all - instead of constantly reminding ourselves of them.
3. John is concerned, as we should be, about the vital importance of understanding the doctrine of the person of our Lord Jesus Christ.
4. At Christmas time a lot of people, both believers and non-believers, celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus.
But the Christian message does not stop in Bethlehem, It always goes to Calvary.
Because there is always an Easter in the Christian Christmas message.
5. Remember that the baby lying in the manger is not just any baby - this is His Son Jesus.
He grew up as a carpenter working quietly day by day in His workshop, so much like the others around Him in outward appearance.
Yet, the prophet Isaiah tells us “he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.”
6.
He was very different on the inside because this was Jesus - His Son.
The whole incarnation of God the Son brings us to a place of seeing Him for who He is - God in the flesh.
7. The Apostle Paul declares it like this “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
8.
The prophet Isaiah speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit tells us that “it was the will of the Lord to crush him (and that) he has put him to grief”
9.
In every Christmas story we need to remember that this baby was not born to live but instead He was born to die so that we might live.
10.
God had given the law; God had sent His prophets and patriarchs.
He had raised up great men and blessed them and still there was no true salvation.
The best men had failed, none could keep the law.
“Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God.
For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.
For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus”
(Romans 3:19-24)
11.
There is only one way whereby a man can be saved and reconciled to God - there must be a shedding of blood from a perfect sacrifice.
“Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.
Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world.
But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.”
(Hebrews 9:22-28)
12.
As we close today I want us to think about this - the Son of God, Jesus, the one through whom all things were made, the Word that is in the Father, the Word that was God from the beginning, the eternal absolute Son - lying helplessly as a baby in a manger.
All that so you and I might be saved and reconciled to God!
That is how important you are to the Father.
Will you respond to this infinite love that He has bestowed on us this Christmas season?
