Jesus Teaches Honor

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath
See also Matt 12 and Mark 3
Luke 14:1 NLT
1 One Sabbath day Jesus went to eat dinner in the home of a leader of the Pharisees, and the people were watching him closely.
Watch = 3906 παρατηρέω [paratereo /par·at·ay·reh·o/] [1]
· to see what he is going to do
o Watch good = learn
· in a bad sense, to watch insidiously
o Watch with bad intentions – in order to trap, judge, or wanted a show

Motives – to see

Luke 14:2 NLT
2 There was a man there whose arms and legs were swollen.
· This man is an illustration of Jesus’ upcoming parable
Luke 14:3 NLT
3 Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in religious law, “Is it permitted in the law to heal people on the Sabbath day, or not?”

Religious Motive Exposed

· If YES = they incriminate themselves because their whole ministry was centered around NOT doing anything on the Sabbath
· If NO = they appear as uncaring and heartless
· Mark 3 – the opposite happened – the Pharisee asked Jesus if healing were lawful on the Sabbath – so they could trap Him… Jesus declared He was Lord even over the Sabbath to do good, and healed a man of a withered hand.
Luke 14:4 NLT
4 When they refused to answer, Jesus touched the sick man and healed him and sent him away.
Sent away –
· mission accomplished – the healed man was free to go! Maybe he did not need to hear the upcoming parable?
· maybe Jesus did not want the thankful man to hear the coming rebuke
Luke 14:5 NLT
5 Then he turned to them and said, “Which of you doesn’t work on the Sabbath? If your son or your cow falls into a pit, don’t you rush to get him out?”
Luke 14:6 NLT
6 Again they could not answer.
· Audience = Religious Leaders
· The answer = YES, they did!
· Hypocrisy exposed – double standard

Selfishness of personal POSSESSION exposed

· the religious leaders cared more for their cow than their brother
· God desires mercy, not sacrifice – Hosea 6:6

Jesus Teaches Humility

· Audience = CROWD
· Self – seeking honor
· self-reward vs God reward

Selfishness of personal POSITION exposed

· Self-promotion – personal ambition – step on others
Luke 14:7 NLT
7 When Jesus noticed that all who had come to the dinner were trying to sit in the seats of honor near the head of the table, he gave them this advice:
What were the seats of honor?
Luke 14:8 NLT
8 “When you are invited to a wedding feast, don’t sit in the seat of honor. What if someone who is more distinguished than you has also been invited?

Public Motives Exposed

· Our seat reflects our honor
· Honor comes from HOST, not ourselves
· HOST determines the guests value
· We are not to think too highly of ourselves
Luke 14:9 NLT
9 The host will come and say, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then you will be embarrassed, and you will have to take whatever seat is left at the foot of the table!
· Embarrassed = G152 = shame, disgrace
· Modern definition – AWKWARD!
Luke 14:10 NLT
10 “Instead, take the lowest place at the foot of the table. Then when your host sees you, he will come and say, ‘Friend, we have a better place for you!’ Then you will be honored in front of all the other guests.
Luke 14:11 NLT
11 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

God Honors the Humble

Matthew 5:46 NLT
46 If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much.
Matthew 23:11–12 NLT
11 The greatest among you must be a servant. 12 But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
Romans 12:16 NLT
16 Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all!
1 Peter 5:6 NLT
6 So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.

Jesus Teaches Hospitality

Audience = host
Encouraged to act godly
Luke 14:12 NLT
12 Then he turned to his host. “When you put on a luncheon or a banquet,” he said, “don’t invite your friends, brothers, relatives, and rich neighbors. For they will invite you back, and that will be your only reward.

God reward vs man’s reward
