The Scourging and Crucifixion of Jesus

John 19:1 NKJV
1 So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him.
I would like to read to you from a Physician what Jesus experienced for you.
show pic of Passsion of the Christ
Preparations for the scourging were carried out when the Prisoner was stripped of His clothing and His hands tied to a post above His head.
It is doubtful the Romans would have made any attempt to follow the Jewish law in this matter, but the Jews had an ancient law prohibiting more than forty lashes.
The Roman legionnaire steps forward with the flagrum (or flagellum) in his hand. This is a short whip consisting of several heavy, leather straps with two small balls of lead attached near the ends of each. The heavy whip is brought down with full force again and again across Jesus’ shoulders, back, and legs.
At first the thongs cut through the skin only. Then, as the blows continue, they cut deeper into the subcutaneous tissues, producing first an oozing of blood from the capillaries and veins of the skin, and finally spurting arterial bleeding from vessels in the underlying muscles.  The small balls of lead first produce large, deep bruises which are broken open by subsequent blows. Finally the skin of the back is hanging in long ribbons and the entire area is an unrecognizable mass of torn, bleeding tissue. When it is determined by the centurion in charge that the prisoner is near death, the beating is finally stopped.  The half-fainting Jesus is then untied and allowed to slump to the stone pavement, wet with His own blood.
Often times this is when the victim died
John 19:2 NKJV
2 And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe.
In Jesus day everyone would know what this was a reference to.
Do you?
verse 2 is a game.
called the kings game
When Roman Soldiers were bored they played a game called Baselliun. (kings game)
they would rolle a bone dice and depnding on where it would land they would move the king on a piece of stone that they had etched into the ground
the king often was a fool that they would dress like a king.
they would wrap them in purple and place a rediculus crown on their head and as they rolled the dice
and the king moved they would slap and beat the king
here is a first century the kings game piece found at the Via Delorosa
this is a first century piece
yes this is likely a place where Jesus bled for you as a part of a cruel game piece.
here Pilate shouts ɛksi ˈhoʊmoʊ (ekee, homoo_)
“behold the man” as he stands with crowns pressing into his skull
they shout crucify Him all while calling Him king in verses 6-16)
then it it is believed that from this piece called the Lithostratos
that Jesus lifted up the cross
however to do so they would have to tear off the purple robe off Jesus body reopening the wounds that started to dry between the robe and His body
the Physician describes Jesus crucifixion or verses 17-37 this way
show passion of Christ pic #2
The heavy patibulum of the cross is tied across His shoulders, and the procession of the condemned Christ, two thieves, and the execution detail of Roman soldiers headed by a centurion begins its slow journey along the Via Dolorosa.
In spite of His efforts to walk upright, the weight of the heavy wooden beam, together with the shock produced by copious blood loss, is too much.
He stumbles and falls.
The rough wood of the beam gouges into the lacerated skin and muscles of the shoulders.
He tries to rise, but human muscles have been pushed beyond their endurance.
The centurion, anxious to get on with the crucifixion, selects a stalwart North African onlooker, Simon of Cyrene, to carry the cross.
Jesus follows, still bleeding and sweating the cold, clammy sweat of shock, until the 650 yard journey from the fortress Antonia to Golgotha is finally completed.
Jesus is offered wine mixed with myrrh, a mild analgesic mixture. He refuses to drink.
Simon is ordered to place the patibulum on the ground
and Jesus quickly thrown backward with His shoulders against the wood.
The legionnaire feels for the depression at the front of the wrist.
He drives a heavy, square, wrought-iron nail through the wrist and deep into the wood.
Quickly, he moves to the other side and repeats the action, being careful not to pull the arms to tightly, but to allow some flexion and movement.
The patibulum is then lifted in place at the top of the stipes and the title of accusation is nailed above His head reading, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews,”
I am going to stop here.
while he was called the King of the Jews.... as the Jews called Him a demon, belezebub, a false prophet, a false teacher)
but Jesus asks the question
Luke 9:20 (NKJV)
20 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”....”
Let me share with you who Jesus said He is

“23 So He said to them, “You will indeed drink My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father.””
check this out Luke 12:50 “50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am till it is accomplished!”

“61 But He kept silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” 62 Jesus said, “I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” John 4:25–26 “25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.””
6. I am the One who serves - Luke 22:27
“27 For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves.”

“35 And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” John 6:41 “41 The Jews then complained about Him, because He said, “I am the bread which came down from heaven.” John 6:48 “48 I am the bread of life.” John 6:51 “51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven. “28 Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, saying, “You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. 29 But I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.” John 7:34 - John 7:34 “34 You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come.” John 7:36 “36 What is this thing that He said, ‘You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come’?”” John 8:14 “14 Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from and where I am going.” John 8:23 “23 And He said to them, “You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.” John 12:26 “26 If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.” John 13:33 “33 Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. 8. I am the light of the World - John 8:12
“12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 9:5 “5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.””
9. I am not alone… I am with God - John 8:16
“16 And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me.” (SAME EVENT??) John 16:32 “32 Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.”

Where I go you cannot come.” (DUPLICATE)John 14:28 “28 You have heard Me say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father,’ for My Father is greater than I.”

So we will see the I AM lifted up John 8:58 “58 Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”” John 9:9 “9 Some said, “This is he.” Others said, “He is like him.” He said, “I am he.” John 13:19 “19 Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He.” John 18:5 “5 They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am He.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them.” John 18:6 “6 Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.” John 18:8 “8 Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,””

I am in the Father - John 14:10
“10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.” John 14:11 “11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.” John 14:20 “20 At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.”

“37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” last I am in Gospels is:
John 21:3 “3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing.”
Peter was going back to the time before Jesus.
(first new I am since Gospels) I am the Alpha and the Omega - Revelation 1:8
“8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” Revelation 1:11 “11 saying, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,” and, “What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.” Revelation 21:6 “6 And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.” Revelation 22:13 “13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.””
I am the first and the Last - Revelation 1:17
“17 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last.”
I am alive forevermore - Revelation 1:18
“18 I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.”
I am the One who searches the mind and the heart - Revelation 2:23
“23 I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works.”
I am coming quickly - Revelation 3:11
“11 Behold, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown.” Revelation 16:15 “15 “Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.” Revelation 22:7 “7 “Behold, I am coming quickly! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”
Revelation 22:12 “12 “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.” (the last I AM of Jesus in the Bible) Revelation 22:20 “20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming quickly.” Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!”
(the last new I am of Jesus in Bible) I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star - Revelation 22:16
“16 “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.”
Jesus ends with a slap to Satan’s Face:
Isaiah 14:12–17 talks about who Satan is
“12 “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! 13 For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’ 15 Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit. 16 “Those who see you will gaze at you, And consider you, saying:Is this the man who made the earth tremble, Who shook kingdoms, 17 Who made the world as a wilderness And destroyed its cities, Who did not open the house of his prisoners?’”
So Jesus’ reference to this shows that Jesus conquered over Satan.
“The Son of God became a man so that men could become sons of God” - C.S. Lewis
The left foot is now pressed backward against the right foot, and with both feet extended, toes down, a nail is driven through the arch of each, leaving the knees moderately flexed. The Victim is now crucified. As He slowly sags down with more weight on the nails in the wrists, excruciating pain shoots along the fingers and up the arms to explode in the brain — the nails in the wrists are putting pressure on the median nerves.
As He pushes Himself upward to avoid this stretching torment, He places His full weight on the nail through His feet. Again there is the searing agony of the nail tearing through the nerves between the metatarsal bones of the feet.  At this point, as the arms fatigue, great waves of cramps sweep over the muscles, knotting them in deep, relentless, throbbing pain. With these cramps comes the inability to push Himself upward. Hanging by his arms, the pectoral muscles are paralyzed and the intercostal muscles are unable to act. Air can be drawn into the lungs, but cannot be exhaled. Jesus fights to raise Himself in order to get even one short breath. Finally, carbon dioxide builds up in the lungs and in the blood stream and the cramps partially subside. Spasmodically, he is able to push Himself upward to exhale and bring in the life-giving oxygen.
It was undoubtedly during these periods that He uttered the seven short sentences recorded:
The first, looking down at the Roman soldiers throwing dice for His seamless garment, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.”
The second, to the penitent thief, “Today thou shalt be with me in Paradise.”
The third, looking down at the terrified, grief-stricken adolescent John — the beloved Apostle — he said, “Behold thy mother.” Then, looking to His mother Mary, “Woman behold thy son.”
The fourth cry is from the beginning of the 22nd Psalm, “My God, my God, why has thou forsaken me?”
Jesus experienced hours of limitless pain, cycles of twisting, joint-rending cramps, intermittent partial asphyxiation, searing pain where tissue is torn from His lacerated back as He moves up and down against the rough timber. Then another agony begins -- a terrible crushing pain deep in the chest as the pericardium (a membrane around the hear) slowly fills with serum and begins to compress the heart.  One remembers again the 22nd Psalm, the 14th verse: “I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.”
It is now almost over. The loss of tissue fluids has reached a critical level; the compressed heart is struggling to pump heavy, thick, sluggish blood into the tissue; the tortured lungs are making a frantic effort to gasp in small gulps of air. The markedly dehydrated tissues send their flood of stimuli to the brain. Jesus gasps His fifth cry, “I thirst.”  One remembers another verse from the prophetic 22nd Psalm: “My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou has brought me into the dust of death.” A sponge soaked in posca, the cheap, sour wine which is the staple drink of the Roman legionaries, is lifted to His lips. He apparently doesn’t take any of the liquid.
The body of Jesus is now in extremes, and He can feel the chill of death creeping through His tissues. This realization brings out His sixth words, possibly little more than a tortured whisper, “It is finished.”  His mission of atonement has completed. Finally He can allow his body to die.
With one last surge of strength, he once again presses His torn feet against the nail, straightens His legs, takes a deeper breath, and utters His seventh and last cry, “Father! Into thy hands I commit my spirit.”
The rest you know. In order that the Sabbath not be profaned, the Jews asked that the condemned men be dispatched and removed from the crosses. The common method of ending a crucifixion was by crurifracture, the breaking of the bones of the legs. This prevented the victim from pushing himself upward; thus the tension could not be relieved from the muscles of the chest and rapid suffocation occurred. The legs of the two thieves were broken, but when the soldiers came to Jesus they saw that this was unnecessary.
Apparently, to make doubly sure of death, the legionnaire drove his lance through the fifth interspace between the ribs, upward through the pericardium and into the heart. The 34th verse of the 19th chapter of the Gospel according to St. John reports: “And immediately there came out blood and water.” That is, there was an escape of water fluid from the sac surrounding the heart, giving postmortem evidence that Our Lord died not the usual crucifixion death by suffocation, but of heart failure (a broken heart) due to shock and constriction of the heart by fluid in the pericardium.
Thus we have had our glimpse — including the medical evidence — of that epitome of evil which man has exhibited toward Man and toward God.
