Mark 1:21-28

Theme: The Servant’s Arrival
Key verse: v.1
45 verses; 930 words
Grade level: 4.4
In this study we listen to what the VOICES in the synagogue said.

I. What the Members Said. Vs.21-22

Some things that should be noted.
21 And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught.
Jesus, as a Jew, entered on the day specified by God’s word.
Jesus taught the Scriptures.
What caused the stir?
22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.
The problem since Genesis 1:1 has always been one of authority: who’s in charge? Who’s in charge of the universe (Isa. 14:13–14)? Who’s in charge of the nation? Who’s in charge of the home? Who’s in charge of the church? Final authority is the issue.
He taught with authority.
He was not like the scribes.

II. What the Malefactor Said. Vs.23-24

This was inside. How long was he there? V.23
23 And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
According to the Book, the largest concentration of evil spirits in the world is found in a religious whore (Rev. 18:2–3).
How long do hirelings allow it?
Until they have to do something.
The devils know and tremble! V.24
24 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.
“I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.” So every demon is a “Fundamentalist.” They all believe in the virgin birth and the Deity of Christ—just like any good Catholic. And they are all as lost as any good Catholic, I might add (James 2:19).
They act like they don’t fear him now.
Wait until Jesus shows up. (Isaiah 2:17)

III. What the Messiah Said. Vs.25-26

Christ is not interested in a dialogue with devil possessed cults. V.25
25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.
Is it possible for you to do this?
No dialogues with cults. (2 John 1:7-10)
No need for an exorcism when Christ is here. V.26
26 And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.
We see pain.
We hear a loud noise.
We experience freedom.

IV. What the Multitudes Said. Vs.27-28

This Jesus sure is different than Rabbi so and so. v.27
27 And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.
We never saw this before.
We were never taught this.
We never saw authority like this.
We cannot wait to tell our friends and family. V.28
28 And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.
When Jesus shows up we need not brag on our preacher.
When Jesus shows up we need not brag on our people.
When Jesus shows up we need not brag on our place.
Conclusion:
What do you say about your place of worship?
